Vermont Mountaineers 4, Sanford Mainers 5

Wednesday night’s matchup between the Vermont Mountaineers (1-3) and the home team Sanford Mainers (1-3) needed 10 innings to determine a winner, which was ultimately the Mainers to earn their first win of the 2021 season. Jose Rodriguez (St. John’s University) picked up the victory in the 10th inning (1.0 innings pitched, 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts) and the Mountaineers’ Rojo Prarie (College of William and Mary) suffered the loss (1.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 earned runs, 1 BB, 1 K).

Vermont scored first in this matchup in the third inning via a sacrifice out by right fielder Casey Mayes (Michigan State University). In the sixth inning, the Mountaineers scored again, this time off of a wild pitch, to make it 2-0 in favor of the road team. The Mainers had quickly seen enough and scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a two-run lead over the opponent. Shortstop Pierce Gallo (Clemson University) drove in two runners on a fielder’s choice and two at-bats later, catcher Dayne Leonard (Virginia Tech University) drove in two more off of an RBI triple to make it a 4-2 game and quickly take over the momentum.

Vermont would not back down so easily, scoring two more runs to tie the game in the eighth inning and eventually force extra innings. Second baseman Anthony D’Onofrio (Hofstra University) drove in one run off of a double and pinch-hitter Vincenzo Castronovo (Bryant University) brought home the tying run with a single. In the 10th inning, Sanford’s designated hitter Dominic Freeberger saved the day and walked off by way of a fielder’s choice.

Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 4, Bristol Blues 0

The visiting Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (2-0) shut out the Bristol Blues (1-4) at home to remain unbeaten on the season and hand the Blues their third straight loss. Sharks reliever Oliver McCarthy (Duke University) picked up the victory on the road (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K) as Blues starter Matt Erickson (Yale University) took the loss in his second appearance of the year (4.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 5 K).

Martha’s Vineyard scored twice in the fourth inning to get things going for the road team off of a wild pitch and a sacrifice out in the same Dylan Judd (University of Massachusetts Amherst) at-bat. In the sixth inning, another run scored in another Judd at-bat, this time off of an error committed by the first baseman to make it 3-0. In the ninth and final inning of the game, you guessed it, Judd scored the fourth and final run off of a wild pitch, this time in a Connor Beichler (University of Oklahoma) at-bat.

Winnipesaukee Muskrats 2, North Adams Steeplecats 4

The Winnipesaukee Muskrats (2-3) suffered their third straight loss of the summer as the North Adams Steeplecats (1-2-1) won their first of the season after their Wednesday night matchup in North Adams. Neither starting pitcher went more more than three innings in this game.

The Muskrats grabbed a very quick 1-0 lead by way of a leadoff solo home run from Ben Kaliher (Pennsylvania State University) in the top of the first inning, but the Steeplecats did not waste much time tying things up at one run apiece via a bases loaded walk given to Lucas Donlon (Virginia Tech University).

In the seventh inning, Winnipesaukee’s Josh Rodriguez (Virginia Tech University) grabbed the lead with the team’s second solo home run of the day, making it 2-1 in favor of the home team. North Adams was given a huge chance to come back in the eighth inning, and they took advantage of that. The Steeplecats started off the inning by getting two runners on the bases courtesy of a hit-by-pitch and a walk and eventually loaded the bases for Aidan Wilde (University of Massachusetts Amherst). Wilde was the Steeplecats’ hero on Wednesday as he ripped a bases-clearing double to make it a 4-2 ballgame and eventually bring his team to their first win of the 2021 season.

Danbury Westerners 2, Ocean State Waves 5

The Ocean State Waves (2-3) won their home opener over the visiting Danbury Westerners (1-3) on Wednesday night. In relief of Waves starter Domenic Picone (University of Rhode Island), Ryan Gleason (Virginia Tech University) picked up the win (3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K) in his second appearance of the season. Westerners starting pitcher Tate Kuehner (University of Louisville) suffered the road loss as Danbury has now lost three straight games after winning their first in 2021. Ocean State’s Shaun Gamelin (Rhode Island College) earned the save in the ninth inning.

Ocean State scored all five of their total runs in this game in the first inning of action. First baseman Xavier Vargas (University of Rhode Island) started things off with an RBI single to center field, and designated hitter Nick Hassan (Kennesaw State University) smashed a grand slam to give his squad a quick 5-0 lead. Luckily, that was all the Waves needed to win this one.

Danbury scored their only two runs in the second and third innings and did not cross home plate again after that. Shortstop Cameron Norgren (North Carolina Central University) firstly scored on a wild pitch thrown by Picone and in the next inning, centerfielder Justin Jordan (Sacred Heart University) hit a solo home run to make it 2-0. Both teams’ pitching staffs would put up zeroes the rest of the way in this matchup as the Waves crash to their second win of the season.

Upper Valley Nighthawks 5, North Shore Navigators 3

The red-hot visiting Upper Valley Nighthawks won their fourth game of the season to remain unbeaten over the North Shore Navigators (2-1-1) on Wednesday night. Unhittable Nighthawks starter Jace Kaminska (Wichita State University) earned the win over the Navs in Lynn, Massachusetts with five perfect innings of baseball (5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K) and Navs starting pitcher Michael Willis (Georgetown University) got roughed up as he bore the loss (3.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R/ER, 3 BB, 1 K). Upper Valley’s Nick Cantone (Marist College) got the save as he threw nearly four innings to the end of the game (3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K).

Upper Valley got on the board first with an RBI double by catcher Parker Haskin (Elon University) and an RBI single by designated Raphael Pelletier (Kansas State University) to make it 2-0 in the second inning. The Nighthawks would strike twice more in the next inning courtesy of an RBI single from right fielder William Sullivan (Troy University) as well as an RBI from third baseman Ronald Evans (University of North Carolina at Wilmington) to make it a 4-0 game. Upper Valley would score their fifth and final run of the game in the fourth inning off of a sacrifice out by second baseman Kyle Novak (James Madison University).

The home team Navigators would make a three-run comeback in the sixth inning to attempt to get themselves back in the game, but it would be the only inning they scored in on Wednesday. Designated hitter Jacob Gustin (Bryant University) drove in North Shore’s first two runs of the game off of a sacrifice out to make it 5-2 and right fielder Ryan Marra (Brown University) took a bases loaded walk to make it a two-run game. That would be the end of the Navs’ comeback.
