Danbury Westerners 13, North Shore Navigators 5

The four-seed Danbury Westerners (6-1) blew out the five-seed North Shore Navigators (5-2) in Game 1 of the NECBL Championship Series with the help of four home runs at Rogers Park on Wednesday night. Westerners relief pitcher Jimmy Fahey (Trinity College) earned his second win of the postseason after entering the ballgame following starter Angelo Tonas (Georgetown University) in the fourth inning (4 innings pitched, 2 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts), and Navigators starter Aaron Groller (Seton Hall University) suffered the loss on the road (4 IP, 8 H, 8 ER, 4 BB, 4 K).

A two-run home run by North Shore center fielder Joseph Lomuscio (Stanford University) in the top of the first inning gave the visiting team an early lead that would be extended to 4-0 in the third by way of a pair of solo homers from right fielder Dylan Brazil (Stetson University) and first baseman Logan Bravo (Harvard University). In the home half of the same inning, Danbury catcher Jack Payton (University of Louisville) launched a two-run longball of his own to cut his team’s deficit to two tallies. Navigators designated hitter Ryan Marra (Brown University) drove home his squad’s final run of the night with a solo home run of his own in the visitor’s half of the fourth inning.

The remainder of the contest belonged to Westerners, kicking off with a seven-run fourth inning that saw a two-run homer by right fielder Henry Strmecki (University of Dayton), a three-run shot by left fielder Cameron Masterman (University of Louisville), an RBI single from Payton and a wild pitch to bring the score to 9-5 in favor of the home team. The bottom of the seventh inning saw a grand slam hit by Danbury first baseman Andrew Jenkins (Georgia Tech) to all but finalize his squad’s rout over the visiting Navs. The Westerners will have a chance to sweep North Shore and be crowned 2021 NECBL champs on Thursday night at Fraser Field as the Navigators will hope to fend them off and stay alive.
