Ocean State Waves 3, Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 8

In what was a close game for eight innings of baseball, the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks took the win over the visiting Ocean State Waves in the only game played on Tuesday night. Waves starting pitcher Nicholas Payero (Seton Hall University) threw five strong innings of work in his first appearance of the season (5 hits, two runs/earned runs, 0 walks, 5 strikeouts). Sharks starter Daniel Hegarty (University of Kansas) pitched three scoreless innings and allowed just three hits in his 2021 NECBL debut.

Martha’s Vineyard got themselves on the board first in the fourth inning of action with a sacrifice fly by Jake Berger (Harvard University) and then scored again in the fifth inning off of a hit into a fielder’s choice by Matt Woods (Bryant University) to make it 2-0. Ocean State came back to tie the game in the proceeding sixth and seventh innings courtesy of an RBI single by first baseman Griffin Merritt (University of Cincinnati) and another RBI single by shortstop Alex Ramirez (University of Rhode Island) in their respective innings. The game would not remain tied at two runs apiece for long as the Sharks exploded for six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the game over the Waves at the Shark Tank.
