North Shore Navigators 4, Vermont Mountaineers 3

A tight one between the visiting North Shore Navigators (2-0-1) and the hosting Vermont Mountaineers (1-2) ended victorious for the Navs after the Mountaineers gave them a run for their money late in the game. In relief of starting pitcher Austin Amaral (Stetson University) for one inning in the fifth, Aaron Groller (Seton Hall University) earned the win on Monday (1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 0 strikeouts). North Shore’s Justin Butera (Merrimack College) picked up the save as Vermont starter Jackson Ritchey (Virginia Tech University) bore the loss at home.

The Navigators scored all four of their runs in the first and third innings of this matchup, and they were just enough to squeak by the home team. Designated hitter Ryan Marra (Brown University) started the ballgame by driving in two runs on a single after Ritchey allowed runners on the bases to get into scoring position off of a wild pitch. In the third inning, third baseman Jake McElroy (College of the Holy Cross) followed suit and hit a two-run single to right field, making it a 4-0 game.

North Shore would not cross home plate again as the Mountaineers started a comeback in the fourth inning. First baseman Zachary Stevens (United States Naval Academy) scored on a sacrifice out by left fielder Jack Frank (Michigan State University). The score would remain 4-1 until the eighth inning when Vermont threatened to tie things up by scoring twice. Shortstop Keagan Calero scored on a sacrifice out by second baseman Anthony D’Onofrio (Hofstra University) and right fielder Casey Mayes (Michigan State University) drove in a runner with an RBI single to bring Vermont within one run of a tie game. The Navigators shut down the Mountaineers the rest of the way to earn their second win of the season.

Ocean State Waves 9, Bristol Blues 0

The home team Bristol Blues suffered their second loss in a row and fell to 1-3 as the Ocean State Waves improved to 1-2 to begin the summer as they shut the Blues out on Muzzy Field Monday evening. Waves starter Blayne Deaton (Indiana University) was nearly unhittable as he picked up the win in his first start and appearance of 2021 (4.0 innings pitched, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K). Bristol starter Chas Cywin (Post University) was roughed up and took the loss at home (5.0 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 4 earned runs, 3 BB, 6 K).

The Waves crashed quickly in the second inning by scoring four runs. Left fielder Travis Honeyman (Boston College) drove in two runners by way of a single to get the ball rolling. In the very next at-bat, two runs scored on two errors committed by Bristol to give Ocean State a 4-0 lead. The visiting team would strike two more times in the fourth inning via another Honeyman RBI single as well as a sacrifice fly by second baseman Kyle Maves (Quinnipiac University) to make it 6-0 in favor of the Waves.

Ocean State was not quite finished scoring yet as they scored three runs in the seventh inning. Designated hitter Walker Burchfield (Tulane University) drove in one runner on a single, catcher Johnny Tuccillo (Stony Brook University) forced in another run with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and Honeyman drove in his third run of the day with as many RBI singles. The Blues had no answer to the Waves’ offense or pitching staff on Monday night.

Valley Blue Sox 4, Newport Gulls 8

The Newport Gulls topped the Valley Blue Sox in their home opener at Cardines Field in a fog-shortened six-inning game. Valley’s record to begin the year falls to 3-2 while Newport remains unbeaten at 2-0. Gulls starting pitcher Jimmy Kingsbury threw five innings to earn the win (6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) while Blue Sox starter John MacCauley suffered the road loss (4.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 3 K).

The visiting Blue Sox scored first in this matchup quickly in the first inning. One of the New England Collegiate Baseball League’s players of the week, left fielder Brian Hart (Marist College), drove in his team’s first run of the game with an RBI single. Two batters later, designated hitter Travis Holt (High Point University) scored Valley’s second run to begin the game off of a wild pitch thrown by MacCauley. The Blue Sox scored again in the next inning, courtesy of a sacrifice out by second baseman Jack Housinger (Xavier University).

The home team Gulls finally got themselves on the board in the fourth inning when catcher Peter Serruto (Rutger University) drove two runs home on a 2 RBI double to make it a 3-2 ballgame. Newport would go on to score five more runs in the fifth inning to assert themselves over the visitor. Designated hitter Matthew Wood (Pennsylvania State University) smashed a go-ahead two-run double to kick off the Gulls’ five-run campaign. Third baseman Christopher Pittaro (Vanderbilt University) followed suit by driving in another run on a sacrifice out to make it 5-3. Centerfielder Conor Kiely (Stonehill College) brought home another runner by hitting into a fielder’s choice and Serruto gave Newport some more cushion with an RBI single to give his team a 7-3 lead entering the sixth inning. Both Valley and Newport would score one run apiece off of RBI singles in the final inning of action until fog cut the matchup short.
