Bristol Blues 1, Mystic Schooners 9

The visiting Bristol Blues dropped to a 1-2 record to begin the 2021 season after a loss to the hosting Mystic Schooners who evened their record to 1-1. The Schooners’ starting pitcher Joseph Ryan (Boston College) didn’t throw enough innings to qualify for the win (3.2 innings pitched, 4 hits, 1 run, 0 earned runs, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts), but reliever Bowen Baker (Fairfield University) picked it up instead (1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K). The Blues’ starter Jacob Moskowitz (Southwestern University) suffered the loss in his team’s second loss of the season (4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K).

Mystic got on top of the Blues early on in the second inning, scoring one run off of a wild pitch. The Schooners went on to score two more to make it 3-1 in the fourth inning. An RBI single by catcher Jordan Laske (University of Rhode Island) and a hit into a fielder’s choice by designated hitter Jared Burrows (University of Hartford) did the trick. The Blues scored their sole run of the game in the fourth inning.

Tacking on to their lead over the visitor, Mystic scored three runs apiece in the sixth and eighth innings. Laske blasted a two-run home run to extend his squad’s lead to 5-0, and second baseman Sam Kirkpatrick (College of the Holy Cross) made it 6-0 by hitting into a sacrifice out. In the eighth inning, third baseman Addison Kopack (University of Rhode Island) drove in a run with the bases loaded via a balk committed by Bristol. First baseman Christian Policelli (United States Naval Academy) and Laske drove in Mystic’s next and final two runs of the game off of a stolen base and sacrifice out to pick up the win.

North Shore Navigators 4, North Adams Steeplecats 4

11 innings were not enough to decide the winner as the matchup between the visiting North Shore Navigators (1-0-1) and the North Adams Steeplecats (0-1-1) ended in a tie at four runs apiece. The Navs’ starter Todd Tringale (Northern Essex Community College) threw four scoreless innings and was relieved by Jay Driver (Harvard University). The Steeplecats’ starter Kaleb Sophy (Shippensburg University) allowed all four of North Shore’s runs through three innings of work and was relieved by Jordan Yoder (Lafayette College).

Sophy found himself in trouble with the Navigators’ lineup as early as the first inning. Sophy allowed two quick runs to score as he walked the first two batters of the game and loaded the bases. Right fielder Jose Aquino (Cisco College) drove in the first run with a single and third baseman Jake McElroy (College of the Holy Cross) drove in the other by reaching first base on a fielder’s choice to make it 2-0. North Adams’ designated hitter Lucas Donlon (Virginia Tech University) cut North Shore’s lead in half with an RBI double in the second inning to make it a 2-1 game.

The Navigators’ designated hitter Ryan Marra (Brown University) quickly extended his team’s lead in the third inning with a massive two-run home run shot to give North Shore a three-run lead. The home North Adams team got themselves back into the game with the help of a two-run double from second baseman Aidan Wilde (University of Massachusetts Amherst) to make it a 4-3 ballgame. The Steeplecats would not go down without a fight as they tied things up in the eighth inning thanks to an RBI single from Matt Shilling (Liberty University). North Adams held the Navigators scoreless the rest of the way, but neither team would reach home plate again as the game ended in the NECBL’s first tie of the season.

Sanford Mainers 3, Keene Swamp Bats 4

Keene’s starting pitcher Michael Bacica (University of Maine Orono) pitched 5.2 strong innings (2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 11 K), but reliever Jason Diaz (Monroe College) was the one who picked up the victory (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K). Sanford’s John West (Boston College) bore the loss on the road (1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) by allowing Keene’s walkoff run in the ninth inning.

The Mainers were the first to score in the first inning of action as left fielder Calvin Hewett (Vanderbilt University) drove in one run on a single to right field. The game would remain 1-0 in favor of Sanford until the sixth inning when both teams scored one run in their respective half inning. The Mainers’ designated hitter Ryan Turenne (University of Maine Orono) drove in a run by hitting into a sacrifice out and the Swamp Bats’ Mikey Edelman (Long Island University) scored on an error committed by Sanford’s catcher Cam Seymour (University of Southern Maine). Nonetheless, the Mainers were still clinging on to a 2-1 lead.

Keene would waste no time getting their bats going as shortstop David Bryant hit a two-run single to take a 3-2 lead over the visiting Mainers. Sanford’s designated hitter Marty Higgins (St. John’s University) tied the game at three runs by scoring on a wild pitch thrown by the Swamp Bats’ Jason Diaz (Monroe College). The Mainers were eager to send the game into extra innings, however, Keene’s right fielder David Williams (St. John’s University) would quickly put those hopes to rest with a walkoff single to score the winning run and send the Alumni Field crowd home happy.
