Ocean State Waves 6, Bristol Blues 8

The Bristol Blues (2-0) bounced back from their opening day loss on Thursday to beat the visiting Ocean State Waves (0-1) and send the Muzzy Field crowd home happy. The Blues’ starter Mark Faello (Hofstra University) secured the victory (5.0 innings pitched, 6 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned runs, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts) and the Waves’ starter Cody Whitten (Winthrop University) took the loss (2.0 IP, 3 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 8 BB, 1 K). The Blues' James Kirkpatrick (Harvard University) recorded the save to hold off Ocean State.

Bristol scored all eight of their runs off of Whitten, recording four in the first inning and the rest in the third. Whitten walked five total batters in the first inning, which allowed the Blues to get on top of Ocean State quickly and never look back. Right fielder Theodore Hague (Yale University) drove in the first run via an RBI single, followed by third baseman Brock Murtha (University of Notre Dame) who was walked with the bases loaded, catcher Tyler Keith (Post University) who drove in a runner via a fielder’s choice and shortstop Lucas Stalman (Boston College) who also walked with the bases loaded.

However, Ocean State did not go down without a fight. They held the Blues scoreless for the remaining six innings of action and made a comeback campaign. In the fourth inning, the Waves scored three runs to shorten Bristol’s lead to 8-4 thanks to an RBI single plus an error by the Blues. Ocean State scored two more total runs in the seventh and eighth innings, which included an RBI single from third baseman Alex Ramirez (University of Rhode Island) who batted 4-4 on the day. In the end, the Waves’ splash was not high enough to overpower Bristol.

Upper Valley Nighthawks 9, Keene Swamp Bats 0

The reigning Fay Vincent Cup champion Keene Swamp Bats (0-1) were shut out by the visiting Upper Valley Nighthawks (1-0) and held to just two hits in their home opener on Friday night. The Nighthawks’ starting pitcher Jack Keenan (Marist College) threw a four-inning gem (1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K), but did not qualify for the win, which was given to reliever Randall Alejo (College of St. Rose). Alejo was unhittable, pitching three perfect innings to lead Upper Valley to their first win of the 2021 season (0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K). The Swamp Bats’ starter Zachary Davidson (Lincoln Trail College) was dealt the loss at home (4.0 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K).

The Nighthawks came out swinging early, scoring three runs in the second inning. Upper Valley capitalized on an error and a wild pitch committed by the Swamp Bats to get on the board. Upper Valley drove in another run on a sacrifice fly to extend their lead over Keene to 4-0. In the seventh inning, the Nighthawks continued their scoring frenzy, this time by tallying five runs. Keene committed two more errors in the infield and allowed two more RBI singles, via designated hitter Parker Haskin (Elon University) and centerfielder Brett Callahan (St. Joseph’s University), giving Upper Valley an easy win to begin the season.

Winnipesaukee Muskrats 10, Sanford Mainers 6

The visiting Winnipesaukee Muskrats improved to 2-0 on the season in their win over the Sanford Mainers (0-1) in Sanford’s home opener. Muskrats reliever Justin Murray (Dartmouth College) took home the win after he threw three one-hit innings (0 R, 0 BB, 3 K). Mainers reliever Anthony Redfern (Georgetown University) was handed the loss as he allowed five runs in the seventh inning, ultimately giving way to Winnipesaukee’s second win of the new season.

This game featured back-and-forth scoring in the first four innings of action, leaving the game tied at 4-4 until the seventh inning when the Muskrats ran away with the game. Both teams scored one run apiece in the first inning, Winnipesaukee scoring off of an error and Sanford tying the game via a wild pitch. The Muskrats scored two more runs off of another error by the Mainers in the second inning to give themselves a 3-1 lead. Not shortly thereafter in the third inning, Sanford left fielder Calvin Hewett (Vanderbilt University) hit a 2 RBI single to tie things up, followed by another run scored on an error committed by Winnipesaukee to give the Mainers the lead. With the help of two steals on the base paths, the Muskrats brought in a run to tie the game up again.

Winnipesaukee put up a five-spot in the seventh inning on Redfern to blow the game open and break the 4-4 tie. Sanford scored two runs thanks to a pair of RBI singles by centerfielder Cam Ridley (Eastern Kentucky University) and Dominic Freeberger (University of North Carolina Asheville) in a comeback attempt at home, but to no avail.

Vermont Mountaineers 3, North Shore Navigators 4

The North Shore Navigators (1-0) introduced themselves back to the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) for the first time in ten years in walk-off fashion over the visiting Vermont Mountaineers (0-1). The Navs’ centerfielder Joe Lomuscio (Stanford University) hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning to drive in the winning run in front of the Fraser Field faithful.

The Navigators scored three quick runs in the first inning as Vermont’s starter Josh Becker (University of Massachusetts Lowell) allowed two walks early on, starting a domino effect of RBI singles by designated hitter Ryan Marra (Brown University), right fielder Jose Aquino (Cisco College) and Lomuscio. The Mountaineers scored two runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to tie the game 3-3 when North Shore pitcher Luke Marshall (Stonehill College) allowed two bases-loaded walks in a row in the fifth. The game was tied the rest of the way until Lomuscio’s heroics kept it from going to extra innings.

North Shore’s reliever Jackson Emus (Princeton University) picked up the victory as he allowed just one hit through 3.1 innings, striking out two batters and walked none. Vermont’s relief pitcher Timothy Williamson (Harvard University) suffered the loss by allowing the Navigators to walk off at home (1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K).

Mystic Schooners 5, Valley Blue Sox 6

The Mystic Schooners (0-1) couldn’t come away with the win as the Valley Blue Sox (1-1) topped their visitor in a close, one-run game. The Blue Sox’s starter Robert Hensey (Monmouth University) nabbed the win despite allowing all five of Mystic’s runs (6.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) while the Schooners’ starting pitcher Jack DiLauro (College of the Holy Cross) bore the loss by similarly allowing each of the opponent’s six runs (2.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K). Valley’s Daniel Padysak (Charleston Southern University) recorded the save.

The Blue Sox scored all six of their victorious runs in the first three innings of baseball. Valley’s lineup had their way with DiLauro right off the bat in the first inning by scoring five quick runs. Four RBI singles hit by first baseman Nathan Thomas (St. Joseph’s University), left fielder Brian Hart (Marist College), designated hitter Kyle Hawes (University of Hartford) and right fielder Calvin McCall (University of Rhode Island) along with a run driven in by a fielder’s choice gave the home team an early and seemingly comfortable 5-0 lead.

Nonetheless, the Schooners were not going down without a fight. Mystic scored all five of their runs between the second and fourth innings to keep the score within one run for the remainder of the game. Right fielder Barry Walsh (Boston College) hit a triple in the second inning and first baseman Jordan Laske (University of Rhode Island) drove him home in the very next at-bat. The Schooners would score three more times in the third inning thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles by third baseman Addison Kopack (University of Rhode Island), who drove in two runners, and catcher Christian Policello (United States Naval Academy). Mystic’s hitting spree wouldn’t be enough as neither team scored another run in the final five innings of play.
