Upper Valley Nighthawks 6, Sanford Mainers 5

The Upper Valley Nighthawks (12-8) edged the visiting Sanford Mainers (4-12) in a close one in White River Junction on Wednesday night. While two relief pitchers earned the win and loss decisions, both starting pitchers went at least four full innings for each side. The Nighthawks’ Cade Lommel (Creighton University) allowed five hits and three runs while striking out four batters, and Garret Keough (Georgetown University) tossed 4 ⅔ innings while giving up four hits and two runs, walking four batters and punching out three. Nick Cantone (Marist College) secured his second save of the season for Upper Valley.

The Nighthawks scored first in the first inning by way of an RBI from right fielder Alan Roden (Creighton University), a lead that would be taken away from them in the visitor’s half of the second inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly, an RBI single by Sanford left fielder Evan Sleight (Rutgers University) and an RBI double from leadoff hitter and center fielder Cam Ridley (Eastern Kentucky University). Upper Valley first baseman Ronald Evans (University of North Carolina Wilmington) got one run back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI base hit to make it a 3-2 ballgame.

Each squad scored one run in the sixth inning, another RBI single by Sleight for the Mainers and a solo home run by Nighthawks second baseman Max Viera (Northeastern University). A seventh-inning run for the Mainers made it a 5-3 contest in the seventh, but Upper Valley came back to take the eventual winning lead in the bottom of the inning via an RBI from third baseman Gehrig Anglin (Wright State University) and a two-run homer by designated hitter William Sullivan (Troy University).

Newport Gulls 8, Bristol Blues 0

The Newport Gulls (12-7) shut out and handed the visiting Bristol Blues (4-16) their fourth straight loss at Cardines Field on Wednesday night, just one of two games to be played amid the rain across New England. Gulls starting pitcher Kellan Tulio (University of Louisville) earned his second victory of the season in a phenomenal outing (5.0 innings pitched, 2 hits, 0 earned runs, 2 walks, 9 strikeouts), while Blues starter Jacob Moskowitz (Southwestern University) suffered his third loss of the summer (2.1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 0 K).

A two-run single by Newport third baseman Christopher Pittaro (Vanderbilt University) and an RBI single by leadoff hitter and center fielder Kenny Oyama (Loyola Marymount University) quickly got his team on the scoreboard in the second inning of action. A third-inning two-run double off of the bat of catcher Matthew Wood (Pennsylvania State University) on top of an error extended the Gulls’ lead over Bristol to 6-0 early on. Another RBI base hit by Oyama tallied another run for the home team in the bottom of the fifth inning and an RBI from left fielder Jordon Rogers (University of Michigan) in the eighth inning did the trick for Newport to earn their 12th win of the 2021 season.
