Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 3, Mystic Schooners 0

The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks started off their third year in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) in perfect fashion by throwing a combined no-hitter against the Mystic Schooners in a rain-shortened 7-inning game.

Martha’s Vineyard’s starting pitcher Noah Johnson (Virginia Tech University) started the combined no-hit bid (3.0 innings pitched, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 earned runs, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts), followed by Adam Boucher (Duke University) who pitched two scoreless innings and struck out six, then Clark Klitenic (Yale University) who threw 1.2 innings until the game was called. The Schooners’ reliever Trystan Levesque (University of Rhode Island) allowed the Sharks’ final-inning three-run campaign.

The game was scoreless until the seventh and final inning when the Sharks scored their three runs off of Levesque. Second baseman Will Duff (Vanderbilt University) hit a solo home run to get things going for Martha’s Vineyard on the road. After that, right fielder Anthony Shaver (Florida State University) reached and drove in a runner via a fielder’s choice and shortstop Jake Berger (Harvard) hit an RBI single to make it 3-0 and eventually top off the hosting Schooners.

North Adams Steeplecats 1, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 6

The Winnipesaukee Muskrats opened their 21st year in the NECBL with a bang, defeating the visiting North Adams Steeplecats by five runs. The Muskrats’ reliever Geoff Mosseau (St. Johns University), who overpowered North Adams’ lineup, got the victory (4.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 walks, 4 K). Steeplecats’ reliever Jake Cubbler (University of South Carolina) was handed the loss on the road (2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K).

The first runs of this matchup were not scored until the fourth inning. The Steeplecats’ second baseman Jeremy Lea (Pacific University) hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning and the Muskrats’ right fielder Matthew Overton (Molloy College) drove in a runner via an RBI single to tie it up in the bottom half of the inning.

Quickly thereafter, Winnipesaukee took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning and never looked back. Third baseman Josh Petrucci (University of Massachusetts Amherst) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in a run and give the Muskrats a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. In the eighth inning, designated hitter Benjamin Kaliher (Pennsylvania State University) blasted a grand slam to seal the opening day win for the Muskrats. Kaliher finished the day going 2-4 at the plate.

Danbury Westerners 18, Bristol Blues 4

The Bristol Blues were stunned by the Danbury Westerners at home as the visitor put 18 runs on them in their first action as a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) team. Danbury’s starter Kyle Roche (Franklin and Marshall College) secured the victory through five strong innings of work (3 H, 1R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 8 K). Bristol’s starting pitcher Jack Moore (Emory University) similarly pitched five solid, however, Hector Alejandro (University of Connecticut) bore the loss (0.0 IP, 2 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 0 K). He relieved Moore to begin the sixth inning which started the Westerners’ rout of the Blues.

The game was tied 1-1 entering the sixth when Danbury scored 17, yes, 17, runs in the top half of the inning. Second baseman Zach Sellinger (Fordham University) set up the monstrous inning by driving in two runners with a single to left field. Blues reliever Matt Erickson (Yale) walked a total of four batters with the bases loaded, allowing six total runners to score, all without recording an out. Erickson was taken off of the mound once the Westerners made it a 10-1 game. Seven more runners would end up scoring.

Bristol scored three runs in the eighth inning, but it certainly would not end up being enough to top Danbury in this matchup. Bristol committed four errors in this game to Danbury’s three, making this opening day, and Bristol’s introduction to the NECBL, a memorable one for both parties.

Valley Blue Sox 2, Newport Gulls 7

The Newport Gulls stole the Valley Blue Sox’s home opener shine as they topped the Blue Sox on a cloudy Friday evening. The Gulls’ starting pitcher Brandyn Garcia (Quinnipiac University) dominated Valley’s batting order to earn the win (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K). The Blue Sox’s starter Aaron Hubbell (Belmont University) suffered the loss at home (4.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 4 K).

Newport’s offense wasted no time kicking off the 2021 season by scoring six total runs in the first five innings of baseball off of Hubbell. The Gulls’ right fielder Sam Cochrane (College of Charleston) hit a single in the very first at-bat of the game in the top of the first inning and eventually came around to score, creating a domino effect for the coming innings. Cochrane batted 2-5 on the day with one walk and one RBI.

In the third inning, catcher Matthew Wood (Pennsylvania State University) and left fielder Bobby Leitzel (Marymount University) each drove in one run via singles to give Newport a 4-0 lead. Piling on to the Gulls’ slugfest, centerfielder Conor Kiely (Stonehill College) drove in two runs with a single to make it 6-0 in the fifth inning. The Blue Sox scored twice in the later innings to get themselves on the board, but Newport’s offense was too powerful.
