Upper Valley Nighthawks 9, Vermont Mountaineers 3

The Upper Valley Nighthawks (11-8) defeated the visiting Vermont Mountaineers (10-10) and handed them their fourth straight loss in White River Junction on Tuesday night. Neither starting pitcher earned a decision in this contest, but each tossed five innings. The Nighthawks’ Jordy Allard (University of Richmond) allowed three runs, just one earned, on four hits while striking out two, and Mountaineers starter Josh O’Neill (Stony Brook University) allowed three hits and runs, walked four and struck out one batter.

Vermont scored first in the first inning by way of an RBI single from shortstop Matt McDermott (Coastal Carolina University), but they did not keep their lead for long as Upper Valley scored three runs in the home half of the fourth. An RBI base hit by designated hitter Raphael Pelletier (Kansas State University) and a two-run double from shortstop Luca Trigiani (St. Joseph’s University) gave the Nighthawks a 3-1 advantage. The ‘Neers then scored their final two runs of the ballgame in the top of the sixth inning by way of an RBI single from designated hitter Adam Retzbach (Lehigh University) and a bases-loaded walk to tie the game.

Upper Valley snatched a 5-3 lead in the seventh inning thanks to an RBI double by right fielder Alan Roden (Creighton University) and an RBI base hit by first baseman William Sullivan (Troy University) and never looked back. Four more runs came home for Upper Valley, courtesy of an RBI double from center fielder Brett Callahan (St. Joseph’s University) and a three-run home run by third baseman Gehrig Anglin (Wright State University), his second of the 2021 season.

Danbury Westerners 9, Valley Blue Sox 2

The Danbury Westerners (10-7) won their fourth straight contest with a victory over the visiting Valley Blue Sox (11-8) at Rogers Park on Tuesday night. While two relievers earned decisions, Westerners starting pitcher Kyle Roche (Franklin and Marshall College) tossed five solid innings (6 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 1 K), and Blue Sox starter Grant Kipp (Yale University) also threw 5 and ⅓ innings (4 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 8 K).

Danbury struck first in the first inning by way of an RBI triple from right fielder Hank Thomas (Georgia Tech), his first hit of the summer. The Westies kept their 1-0 lead until the visitor’s half of the fifth inning when player of the week, leadoff hitter and shortstop Mason LaPlante (Yale University) gave Valley the lead with a two-run double. Thomas subsequently tied the game at two in the home half of the sixth with an RBI base hit.

Danbury exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning, an eventual winning campaign that featured another RBI single by Thomas, who finished the day 3-4 at the plate with his first hits of the season, a two-run bases-loaded walk and wild pitch and a two-run homer by leadoff hitter and center fielder Henry Strmecki (University of Dayton).

Keene Swamp Bats 13, North Shore Navigators 5

The scorching hot Keene Swamp Bats (12-5) won their 10th straight ballgame with a blowout victory over the visiting North Shore Navigators (9-8-2) at Alumni Field and remain atop the Northern Division standings. Joel Rodriguez (Florida Southwestern State) picked up his second win of the summer in as many appearances for the Swamp Bats in relief (3.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 4 K), while Navigators starter Austin Amaral (Stetson University) suffered his second straight loss (4.1 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 K).

Keene began the scoring early with two runs in the first inning, which featured an RBI single by shortstop David Bryant (Radford University). North Shore wasted no time taking the lead with a three-run second inning thanks to a pair of home runs by catcher Cal Christofori (Yale University) and third baseman Matthias Haas (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo). A four-run home half of the second inning by the Swamp Bats gave them a 6-3 edge over the Navs, an inning that featured a two-run double by center fielder Michael Nyisztor (Rutgers University). Swamp Bats catcher Jared Payne (Polk State College) extended Keene’s lead to 7-3 in the home half of the third inning with one swing of the bat by way of a solo dinger. A pair of solo home runs by Navs center fielder Joe Lomuscio (Stanford University) and first baseman Logan Bravo (Harvard University) made it a 7-5 ballgame after five innings, the final instance in which North Shore would cross home plate on Tuesday.

A sixth-inning solo home run by Bryant and a towering grand slam by right fielder Troy Schreffler (University of Maryland) gave Keene a 12-5 lead which would not be touched the rest of the away in a night where the longball was flying. An RBI single by pinch hitter Matt Almonte (Pace University) extended his squad’s lead to 13-5 in the seventh, the eventual final blowout score.

Mystic Schooners 16, Ocean State Waves 7

The visiting Mystic Schooners (10-8) achieved the 10-win mark in a rout of the Ocean State Waves (7-12) at Old Mountain Field on Tuesday night. Both starting pitchers threw 2 innings of work, the Schooners’ Rohan Handa (Yale University) allowed just two hits and no runs, while the Waves’ Blayne Deaton (Indiana University) gave up 2 hits as well as 6 earned runs and walked four batters.

Mystic jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the second inning, highlighted by numerous walks and a pass ball as well as a two-run home run by Tucker Flint (University of Maryland). Another two-run homer by Addison Kopack (University of Rhode Island) on top of an RBI single from Stanton Leuthner (Stony Brook University) in the third inning extended the visitor’s lead to 9-0. In the bottom of the inning, Slade Wilks (University of Southern Mississippi) cracked a three-run dinger to get his squad on the scoreboard.

The Schooners hit the 10-run mark in the top of the fourth inning, and Ocean State’s Griffin Merritt (University of Cincinnati) drove home two in the bottom half to make it a 10-5 contest.

A four-run top of the fifth inning saw three home runs hit by the Schooners in Daniel Crossen (Northeastern University), Brendan Cumming (Princeton University) and Christopher Brito (Rutgers University) which made it a 15-5 blowout. An RBI single by Crossen in the top of the sixth marked the end of Mystic’s scoring in this ballgame. An eighth-inning solo homer by the Waves’ Nick Hassan (Kennesaw State University) and another in the ninth from Dylan Hoy (Marist College) only added to the eight total longballs hit in this matchup.

Newport Gulls 9, Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 6

The visiting Newport Gulls (11-7) ended the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks’ (11-6) win streak at four games as they defeated them on their Shark Tank home turf on Tuesday night. Gulls starting pitcher Jimmy Kingsbury (Villanova University) earned his third victory of the summer (5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K), and Sharks reliever Clark Kiltenic (Yale University) took the loss in a rough outing (0.2 IP, 1 H, 5 R/ER, 4 BB, 2 K).

A leadoff, first-inning solo home run by Newport center fielder Kenny Oyama (Loyola Marymount University) gave his team a very quick 1-0 lead. A three-run second inning homer by Sharks shortstop Grant Norris (Duke University) gave the home team an early 3-1 lead that would soon be extended to 4-1 in the bottom of the third inning with the help of an error committed by the Gulls. Newport soon tied the game up at four runs apiece in the top of the fifth inning courtesy of a two-run single by right fielder Sam Cochrane (College of Charleston) and an RBI base hit from shortstop Spenser Smith (Northeastern University).

An explosive visitor’s half of the sixth inning by the Gulls saw five runners cross home plate, highlighted by a bases-loaded walk, an RBI single by Smith and a two-run base hit by left fielder Jordon Rogers (University of Michigan) that gave Newport a comfortable 9-4 lead. Martha’s Vineyard third baseman Spencer Bramwell (Colorado Mesa University) launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning in an attempted comeback, but it would not be enough to overpower the Gulls.
