Keene Swamp Bats 8, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 3

The red-hot Keene Swamp Bats (10-5) achieved their 10th win of the 2021 season while simultaneously winning their eighth straight ballgame with a victory over the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (7-12) in Laconia on Sunday night. Swamp Bats relief pitcher Joel Rodriguez (Florida Southwestern State College) picked up the victory in his first appearance of the summer, while Muskrats starting pitcher Anthony Hattrup (University of Dayton) suffered the loss (3.1 innings pitched, 5 hits, 5 runs/earned runs, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts).

Both teams scored one run in the first inning by way of a pair of RBI singles, but a two-run second by Winnipesaukee featuring two bases-loaded walks gave the home team an early 3-1 lead. The ‘Skrats kept their lead until the visitor’s half of the fourth inning when Keene second baseman Zach Bushling (University of Connecticut) launched a grand slam, his second home run of the season, to give his squad a quick 5-3 lead.

Swamp Bats catcher Jared Payne (Polk State College) extended his squad’s lead over their opponent to 6-3 in the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run and his first of the summer. Back-to-back solo home runs by Swamp Bats shortstop David Bryant (Radford University) and third baseman Daniel DiGeorgio (Rutgers University) in the ninth inning capped off a longball-filled evening and win for the visiting team.

Vermont Mountaineers 2, North Shore Navigators 3

The North Shore Navigators (9-7-2) walked off against the visiting Vermont Mountaineers (10-8) in extra innings on Sunday evening at Fraser Field. While two relievers naturally earned the decisions, Mountaineers starting pitcher Luke Rettig (Lehigh University) tossed a four-inning performance (4 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 4 K) and the Navigators’ Christopher Shine (Seton Hall University) threw five at home (7 H, 2 R/ER, 0 BB, 3 K).

Vermont catcher Adam Retzbach (Lehigh University) tallied his squad’s only runs of the game with a two-run home run in the top of the second inning. North Shore did not waste much time getting themselves on the board in the home half of the third thanks to an RBI single by left fielder David Kale (Fordham University) to cut the Navs’ deficit in half.

A solo homer by North Shore first baseman Logan Bravo (Harvard University) tied up the ballgame at two runs apiece in the seventh inning. An extra 10th inning was needed to decide a winner in this one, and Navigators star center fielder Joe Lomuscio (Stanford University) came in clutch with a two-out RBI single to send the Fraser Faithful and his teammates home happy.
