Game 1: North Adams Steeplecats 3, Upper Valley Nighthawks 4

The Upper Valley Nighthawks edged the visiting North Adams Steeplecats in Game 1 of their doubleheader in White River Junction on Friday evening. Three relievers earned decisions in this contest, Zane Kmietek (Marist College) earning the victory for the Nighthawks, Justin Baeyens (St. Thomas Aquinas College) suffering the loss for the Steeplecats and Henry Leake (Boston College) recording the save for the winning squad.

The seven-inning ballgame remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when Upper Valley tallied three runs. Left fielder Andrew Walker (Xavier University) drove one runner home and third baseman Gehrig Anglin (Wright State University) launched a two-run home run, his first of the summer. The ‘Cats came roaring back in the top of the fourth courtesy of a two-run double by designated Brandon Hylton (Stetson University) to make it a 3-2 contest.

North Adams tied the game at three runs apiece in the visitor’s half of the fifth inning as shortstop Thomas Gavello (Pacific University) drove a teammate home. ‘Hawks right fielder Alan Roden (Creighton University) crushed a solo homer in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead, an eventual winning lead for Upper Valley.

Game 2: North Adams Steeplecats 7, Upper Valley Nighthawks 0

The North Adams Steeplecats (6-7-2) shut out the Upper Valley NIghthawks (9-7) in Game 2 of Friday’s doubleheader in White River Junction. Steeplecats starting pitcher Kaleb Sophy (Shippensburg University) picked up the win (5.1 innings pitched, 5 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts), while Cameron Bye (Wichita State University) was handed the loss for the Nighthawks (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 4 K). Luke Benneche (Lafayette College) secured the save for North Adams.

There was no score in this seven-inning contest until the visitor’s half of the fourth when one run came in for the Steeplecats via an error committed by Upper Valley. Designated hitter Jeremty Lea (Pacific University) cracked a solo dinger, his second on the season, in the top of the fifth to make it a 2-0 game. An RBI single by first baseman John Marti (University of Albany) in the sixth made it 3-0, followed by a four-run seventh and final inning to cap off the shutout. Shortstop Thomas Gavello (Pacific University) drove in two runners with a double and right fielder Charles Middleton (Pacific University) drove in two more with a single.

Mystic Schooners 11, Bristol Blues 3

The visiting Mystic Schooners (8-8) downed the Bristol Blues (4-13) at Muzzy Field on Friday night with the help of two separate five-run innings. Jack Weeks (Georgetown University) picked up the win in relief his fifth appearance of the summer for the Schooners (2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K), and Blues starting pitcher Kevin Vaupel (Seton Hill University) was handed the loss (4.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 5 K).

Bristol struck first in the first inning by way of an RBI single from third baseman Skyler Messinger (University of Kansas), and Mystic tied the game in the top of the third thanks to an error committed by the Blues. Mystic took a 6-1 lead in the visitor’s half of the fourth inning highlighted by a three-run home run off of the bat of third baseman Charlie Pagliarini (Fairfield University), his first of the summer.

The score remained at that until the top of the eighth inning when the Schooners exploded for another five runs, a campaign that featured a two-run error as well as a two-run single by center fielder Brendan Cumming (Princeton University) to extend their lead over Bristol to 11-1. A two-run double by Blues leadoff hitter and center fielder Austin White (Coastal Carolina University) in the bottom of the ninth all but gave Bristol a couple more runs to their name in this ballgame.

Winnipesaukee Muskrats 2, Keene Swamp Bats 7

The Keene Swamp Bats (9-5) extended their winning streak to seven games with a win over the visiting Winnipesaukee Muskrats (6-10) at Alumni Field on Friday night. Swamp Bats starting pitcher Michael Bacica (University of Maine Orono) took home his first victory of the summer (5.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 10 K), and fellow starter Geoff Mosseau (St. John’s University) bore the loss for the Muskrats (5.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R/ER, 4 BB, 3 K).

Keene took a 1-0 lead in the third inning by way of a solo home run from leadoff hitter and right fielder Michael Nyisztor (Rutgers University), then a three-run homer by center fielder Thomas Joseph (Jacksonville University) in the bottom of the fifth made it a 4-0 contest. Steeplecats right fielder Joshua Rodriguez (Rutgers University) launched a two-run home run in the visitor’s half of the sixth to score his team’s only runs of the night.

Nyisztor drove home the Swamp Bats’ fifth run of the ballgame to give Keene a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, and a two-run eighth inning that featured an RBI single from catcher Jared Payne (Polk State College) as well as a sacrifice fly by third baseman Zach Bushling (University of Connecticut).

Sanford Mainers 7, Vermont Mountaineers 11

The Vermont Mountaineers (10-6) reached the 10-win mark with a victory over the visiting Sanford Mainers (3-10) in Montpelier on Friday night. Both starting pitchers tossed four innings, the Mainers’ Alexander McKenney (University of Maine Orono) allowing nine hits and five runs, while the Mountaineers’ Josh Becker (University of Massachusetts Lowell) allowed just two hits and one run.

A two-run single by Mountaineers third baseman Matt McDermott (Coastal Carolina University) gave his squad a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Sanford got one run back in the visitor’s half of the fourth, but Vermont answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to an error and a pair of RBI singles from McDermott and first baseman Jeffrey Holtz (Xavier University) to make it a 5-1 contest.

The Mainers made it 5-3 in the top of the fifth inning with the help of a two-run double by second baseman Dominic Freeberger (University of North Carolina Asheville), a score that remained until the eighth inning. Sanford took a 6-5 lead with a three-run inning highlighted by a balk and two RBI singles, but the ‘Neers dominated the plate in the home half of the eighth by scoring six times. A bases-clearing triple by leadoff hitter and center fielder Tommy Courtney (University of Pennsylvania) and an RBI triple by McDermott in the following at-bat did the trick for Vermont.

Ocean State Waves 4, Newport Gulls 2

The Ocean State Waves (6-9) edged the Newport Gulls (9-6) in 10 innings at Cardines Field on Friday night with the help of a two-run campaign in the top of the extra inning. Both starting pitchers went four innings, Cody Whitten (Winthrop University) allowing five hits and two runs while striking out 10 for Ocean State, and Newport’s Jack Aldrich (Tulane University) allowing six hits and one run while striking out six.

The Gulls struck first in the first inning of action as first baseman Bryce Hulett (University of Pittsburgh) drove in two runners with a single to take a quick lead. The Waves got one back in the visitor’s half of the second inning from designated hitter Walker Burchfield’s (Tulane University) RBI base hit to cut Newport’s lead in half.

The score remained 2-1 until the top of the ninth when Ocean State catcher Johnny Tuccillo (Stony Brook University) tied the game at two runs with an RBI single. The Waves wasted no time crashing in the 10th inning as Burchfield hit a two-run home run to take a 4-2 lead that would be secured through the bottom half of the inning.

Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 7, Valley Blue Sox 1

The visiting Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (10-5) similarly reached 10 wins on Friday night with a victory over the Valley Blue Sox (11-6) at MacKenzie Stadium. Matthew Siverling (Virginia Tech University) was awarded the win in relief for the Sharks (3.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K), and Blue Sox starter Robert Hensey (Monmouth University) took the loss at home (2.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R/ER, 5 BB, 5 K).

A three-run second inning by Martha’s Vineyard gave them an early lead over the hosting squad, thanks to a pair of RBI singles by leadoff hitter and left fielder Collin Shapiro (University of Massachusetts Amherst) and center fielder Tommy Seidl (University of Alabama) as well as a bases-loaded walk. Four runs in the top of the third gave the Sharks a quick 7-0 lead, an inning that featured a two-run double by shortstop Jadyn Jackson (Georgia Tech). The Blue Sox scored their sole run in the home half of the third courtesy of an RBI base hit from left fielder Brian Hart (Marist College). Not one more run crossed home plate after the third inning of action.
