Newport Gulls 6, Danbury Westerners 8

A six-run ninth inning gave the Danbury Westerners (7-7) a walkoff win over the visiting Newport Gulls (9-5) at Rogers Park on Thursday night. Both starting pitchers put up masterful numbers in this contest: the Westerners’ Christian Allegretti (Bryant University) threw four innings and allowed just two hits and two runs while striking out four, while the Gulls’ Kellan Tulio (University of Louisville) tossed six innings of one-hit and one-run ball, walking four batters and striking out 10. NHowever, neither earned a decision in this matchup.

The score remained at zero until the third inning when Newport took a 2-0 lead with the help of an RBI from right fielder Sam Cochrane (College of Charleston) and a sacrifice fly by first baseman Bryce Hulett (University of Pittsburgh). Danbury got one back in the home half of the inning thanks to a solo home run by second baseman John Anderson (Georgia Tech) to make it 2-1. The Gulls extended their lead over the Westies with another run in the fifth in what was a relatively quiet game up to that point.

A three-run top of the seventh inning by Newport, which featured an RBI single by Cochrane and a two-run homer from designated hitter Justin Guerrera (Fairfield University), gave the Guls a seemingly comfortable 6-1 lead over the Westies near the end. Danbury tallied one run in the home half of the eighth to cut their deficit to 6-2 off of an error, and that was just the start of it. A two-run single by shortstop Cameron Norgren (North Carolina Central University) got the scoring started for the Westerners in the bottom of the ninth, and Anderson became their hero as he launched a walkoff grand slam in front of the home crowd.

Sanford appeared to have the win secured until the ninth when Vermont took the lead with a three-run comeback campaign in the top of the inning. An error by the Mainers along with a two-run home run by catcher Parker Landwehr (Boston College) did the trick for the Mountaineers.
