Game 1: Bristol Blues 0, Ocean State Waves 1

Game 1 of the doubleheader between the Bristol Blues and the Ocean State Waves went to extra innings and ended victoriously for the Waves after nine at Old Mountain Field on Wednesday evening.

Neither starting pitcher earned a decision in this matchup, but both threw excellent performances on the mound. Ocean State starter Blayne Deaton (Indiana University) pitched five scoreless innings (3 hits, 0 runs, 4 walks, 0 strikeouts) and Bristol’s Jacob Moskowitz (Southwestern University) threw 6.2 innings in his fourth appearance of the summer (5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K).

In a contest that remained scoreless until the top half of the ninth inning, a game that was supposed to be just seven, Waves right fielder Slade Wilks (University of Southern Mississippi) brought home third baseman Kyle Maves (Quinnipiac University) with a fielder’s choice to score the singular run of the game.

Game 2: Bristol Blues 6, Ocean State Waves 3

The Bristol Blues (4-12) split the doubleheader with a Game 2 win over the Ocean State Waves (5-8). Blues reliever Hector Alejandro (University of Connecticut) picked up the victory and his first of the season (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K), and fellow relief pitcher Jake McOsker (College of the Holy Cross) took the loss for the Waves (1.0 IP, 0 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 1 K). James Kirkpatrick (Harvard University) recorded the save for Bristol.

The Waves happened to crash first in this matchup by way of a solo homer from first baseman Xavier Vargas (University of Rhode Island) in the bottom of the first inning, his first of the summer. Another solo dinger off of the bat of Blues catcher Chad Knight (Duke University) followed by a bases-loaded walk gave Bristol the lead in the second inning. The visitors tacked on another run with the help of an error by Ocean State in the top of the third to give the Blues a 3-1 lead.

Waves catcher Johnny Tuccillo (Stony Brook University) tied the game at three with one swing of the wood, mashing a two-run homer in the home half of the fourth inning. A fielder’s choice by Knight gave Bristol a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth. The final two runs of the matchup came in the visitor’s half of the sixth inning as the Blues extended their lead over Ocean State via another error committed by the Waves, followed by a wild pitch.

North Shore Navigators 11, Upper Valley Nighthawks 10

The visiting North Shore Navigators (7-6-2) edged the Upper Valley Nighthawks (8-5) in a high-scoring game in White River Junction on Wednesday night. Two relievers earned the decisions in this contest, with Myles McDermott (San Jacinto College North) taking home the win for the Navigators (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 0 K), while Zane Kmietek (Marist College) bore the loss for the Nighthawks (1.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 0 K). James Sashin (University of San Diego) secured the save for North Shore.

The ‘Hawks scored three times in the home half of the first inning courtesy of a two-run triple by designated hitter Gehrig Anglin (Wright State University) and another RBI from right fielder Alan Roden (Creighton University) to give Upper Valley an early 3-0 lead. The Navs tied things up in the top of the second inning, which featured a two-run single from shortstop Jonathan Luders (Seton Hall University) to make it a 3-3 ballgame. A four-run bottom of the second gave the ‘Hawks a 7-3 lead with the help of a two-run base hit by second baseman Max Viera (Northeastern University).

Upper Valley tacked on another run in the home half of the third inning to extend their lead over North Shore to 8-3, a score that would remain until the Navs tallied a run back in the top of the sixth inning from an RBI double by second baseman Jacob Gustin (Bryant University). Two more runs scored in the seventh for North Shore with a pair of singles by center fielder Joe Lomuscio (Stanford University) and Gustin to make it an 8-6 contest. The Nighthawks scored once in the home half of the seventh to extend their lead to 9-6. A five-run inning by the Navigators highlighted by a bases-clearing double from designated hitter Jose Aquino (Cisco College) gave his squad an 11-9 lead. Upper Valley attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth and brought one run home to make it a one-run game, but it would not be enough to force extra innings.

Danbury Westerners 0, Mystic Schooners 3

The Mystic Schooners (7-6) shut out the visiting Danbury Westerners (6-7) at home on Wednesday evening in a quick, two-hour and sixteen-minute contest. In relief of starting pitcher Rohan Handa (Yale University), Sam Favieri (University of Connecticut) picked up the victory for the Schooners (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K). Westerners starter Tate Kuehner (University of Louisville) suffered his third loss in as many appearances thus far in 2021 (5.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) despite an impressive performance. Matthew Bollenbacher (East Tennessee State University) secured the save for Mystic.

The Schooners quickly got themselves on the board in the first inning of action with the help of an error committed by Danbury, and the same occurred in the second inning to give Mystic a 2-0 advantage. Right fielder Barry Walsh (Boston College) launched a solo home run in the fourth inning to give his squad a three-run lead, the final instance in which a runner would cross home plate in the contest.

North Adams Steeplecats 6, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 12

The Winnipesaukee Muskrats (6-8) broke their five-game losing skid with a dominating win over the North Adams Steeplecats (5-6-2) in Laconia on Wednesday night. Two relievers picked up the win and loss decisions, Justin Murray (Dartmouth College) earning the victory for the Muskrats (3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K), while Vincenzo Zappulla (Merrimack College) was handed the loss for the Steeplecats (2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R/ER, 2 BB, 1 K).

The ‘Skrats tore the game open in the first inning with a five-run campaign. Designated hitter Jake LaPrairie (Tulane University) drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single, followed by another from center fielder Cole Johnson (Kansas State University), an RBI double by catcher Nick Marrero (Hofstra University), another RBI base-hit from second baseman Drew Metzdorf (Abilene Christian University) and lastly another RBI single by first baseman Josh Petrucci (University of Massachusetts Amherst). The ‘Cats tied the game with a five-run third inning of their own, highlighted by a solo dinger by designated hitter Hayden Gilliland (Tennessee Tech University) and a three-run home run off of the bat of left fielder Charles Middleton (Pacific University). Winnipesaukee grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third with a pair of RBI from left fielder Kevin Catrine (University of North Carolina Asheville) and shortstop Kohl Abrams (University of North Carolina Asheville) to make it 7-5.

North Adams scored once in the home half of the fourth to cut their deficit to just 7-6, but the Muskrats extended their lead to 12-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning with the help of a two-run bomb from right fielder Matthew Overton (Molloy College), his second of the summer. No runners would score the rest of the way in the high-scoring contest.

Vermont Mountaineers 5, Keene Swamp Bats 7

The Keene Swamp Bats (7-5) won their fifth straight game with a victory over the visiting Vermont Mountaineers (8-6) at Alumni Field on Wednesday night. Swamp Bats relief pitcher Kaleb Corbett (University of Louisville) picked up his second win of the summer (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K), while fellow reliever Parker Scott (Rutgers University) was handed the loss for the Mountaineers (1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 2 K).

Vermont third baseman Evan Giordano (SUNY Stony Brook) gave his team an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with a solo homer, a score that remained until the home half of the fourth inning when Keene leadoff hitter and center fielder Michael Nyisztor (Rutgers University) tied things up with a solo dinger of his own. Mountaineers left fielder Casey Mayes (Michigan State University) gave Vermont a 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning, but their lead did not last long as the Swamp Bats came swooping in with a four-run bottom of the sixth. An RBI from right fielder Troy Schreffler (University of Maryland) and a three-run home run by designated hitter Thomas Joseph (Jacksonville University) gave Keene a 5-2 lead.

An error committed by the Swamp Bats in the visitor’s half of the seventh inning brought home a run for the ‘Neers which cut their deficit to 5-3. A two-run dinger off of the bat of Vermont catcher Matt Oldham (Elon University) in the top of the eighth made it a one-run contest, but Keene got both of those runs back in the next half of the inning with a pair of RBI singles from Schreffler and Joseph.

Valley Blue Sox 9, Newport Gulls 6

The Valley Blue Sox (10-5) are the first NECBL squad to reach the 10-win mark in the 2021 season as they defeated the Newport Gulls (9-4) at Cardines Field on Wednesday night. Blue Sox relief pitcher Jonathan Kelly (Xavier University) recorded the win (3.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R/ER, 2 BB, 6 K), while fellow reliever Chris Aldrich (University of California Los Angeles) took the loss at home for the Gulls (0.2 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K).

This matchup remained scoreless until the visitor’s half of the fourth inning when Valley struck three times. An RBI double by left fielder Garrett Schultz (Xavier University), an RBI from right fielder Cristian Tejada (Miami University) and an RBI base-hit by shortstop Mason LaPlante (Yale University) did the job. The Gulls immediately tied the game at 3-3 in their half of the inning courtesy of a two-run single from leadoff hitter and center fielder Kenny Oyama (Loyola Marymount University) as well as an RBI single by Dawson Brigman (Santa Clara University). However, a four-run top of the fifth by the Blue Sox gave them a comfortable lead over Newport. A bases-loaded walk, a two-run single by Schultz and another RBI from Tejada did the trick for Valley to make it a 7-3 ballgame.

The Blue Sox tallied another run with the help of a pass ball in the sixth inning to extend their lead over the Gulls, but Newport scored three times in the home half of the eighth to make it an 8-6, one-run contest by way of an RBI double by Oyama and a two-run base-hit from Brigman. LaPlante gave his Valley squad an insurance run in the top of the ninth to secure the Blue Sox’s tenth win of the summer.
