Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 6, Ocean State Waves 7

The hosting Ocean State Waves (4-7) walked off against the Martha’s Vineyard Sahrks (7-5) in ten innings on on Monday night at Vineyard Baseball Park in a nail-biter. Sharks starting pitcher Noah Johnson (Virginia Tech University) was roughed up in his third appearance of the summer (4.0 innings pitched, 4 hits, 4 runs/earned runs, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts), and Waves starter Tyler Roche (St. John’s University) similarly put up four innings of work (5 H, 3 R/ER, 3 BB, 4 K).

Martha’s Vineyard struck first in the first inning of action with an RBI single by first baseman Ryan Hernandez (University of Houston), and a two-run dinger from right fielder Anthony Shaver (Florida State University) gave his squad a 3-0 lead early. Ocean State got a run back in the bottom of the third inning by way of a sacrifice fly from right fielder Albert Choi (New Jersey Institute of Technology), and three more followed in the fourth inning to give the Waves a 4-3 lead. An RBI base hit by left fielder Travis Honeyman (Boston College), an RBI triple from center fielder Colby Shade (University of Oregon) and a sacrifice fly by third baseman Kevin Keister (University of Maryland) got the job done.

The score remained 4-3 in favor of the Waves until the Sharks came biting with two runs in the top of the seventh via an RBI base hit from second baseman Drew Grace (University of Kentucky) and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. The Waves crashed to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth with one out thanks to an RBI single by Choi to force extra innings. Shaver drove in a runner with a single in the top of the tenth inning, but Honeyman tied the game with an RBI single and Ocean State shortstop Dylan Hoy (Marist College) walked it off the same way to send the crowd home happy.
