Upper Valley Nighthawks 7, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 4

An exciting contest between the visiting Upper Valley Nighthawks (8-4) and the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (5-8) ended victorious for the ‘Hawks in Laconia on Sunday evening. Two relief pitchers took on the decisions as Upper Valley pitcher Jake Gigliotti (Northeastern University) earned the win (3.0 innings pitched, 2 hits, 1 run/earned run, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts), while Scott Meylan (University of New Orleans) suffered the loss at home (2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R/ER, 1 BB, 4 K). The ‘Skrats struck first in the home half of the first inning with the help of a two-run single by center fielder Joshua Rodriguez (Rutgers University). Winnipesaukee kept their 2-0 lead until the top of the fourth inning when Nighthawks first baseman William Sullivan (Troy University) drove a runner home with an RBI base-hit. Muskrats first baseman Mike La Rocca (Southern New Hampshire University) got the run back in the bottom of the inning by way of a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 in favor of the home team.

Upper Valley tied the game up at three runs apiece with the combination of a sacrifice fly and another sacrifice out in the visitor’s half of the fifth inning. The hosting Mainers got themselves on the scoreboard first in the home half of the second inning with an RBI base-hit from designated hitter Freddy Rojas, Jr. (Texas Rio Grande Valley). Three more runs came for Sanford in the bottom of the third inning courtesy of a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single by third baseman Jonathan Barditch (Manhattan College) to make it a 4-0 contest early. Two more runners crossed home plate in the fourth inning for the Mainers by way of a sacrifice fly and then an RBI base-hit from leadoff hitter and center fielder Cam Ridley (Eastern Kentucky University).

Newport Gulls 8, Mystic Schooners 6

The Newport Gulls (8-3) won their second straight contest with a victory over the Mystic Schooners (6-6) at Fitch High School on Sunday night. Gulls starting pitcher Brandyn Garcia (Quinnipiac University) picked up his second win of the season (5.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R/ER, 4 BB, 4 K), and Schooners reliever Sean Sposato (University of Rhode Island) took the loss at home (2.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K). Peter Sakellaris (Virginia Tech University) recorded his second straight save in as many appearances for Newport.

Mystic took a 2-0 lead on the Gulls early, but Newport fought back in the sixth inning with a three-run campaign to take the lead. Three straight singles from second baseman Dawson Brigman (Santa Clara University), right fielder Sam Cochrane (College of Charleston) and designated hitter Justin Guerrera (Fairfield University) helped the cause.

Cochrane extended Newport’s lead over the Schooners to 4-2 with his team-leading 15th hit of the summer in the visitor’s half of the seventh. In the same inning, Guerrera launched a three-run dinger to give his Gulls a healthy 7-2 lead. However, Newport scored three more in the home half of the seventh via a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice double play and a solo home run off of the bat of right fielder Barry Walsh (Boston College). Newport held off the Schooners the rest of the way to grab the win.

Danbury Westerners 17, Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 3

The visiting Danbury Westerners (6-6) blew out the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (7-4) to hand them their third straight loss in a 14-run victory. Westies starting pitcher Jimmy Fahey (Trinity College) earned the win (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R/ER, 0 BB, 4 K), while fellow starter Ryan Vanderhei (University of Kansas) was dealt the loss for the Sharks (1.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K).

A 6-run second inning gave Danbury an early, comfortable lead over Martha’s Vineyard, highlighted by a grand slam from first baseman Cameron Masterman (University of Louisville). The Sharks got two runs back in the bottom half with a single, but the Westerners showed no mercy with an eight-run third inning that featured another Masterman grand slam to give Danbury a 14-2 lead after just ⅓ of the way through the contest.

The Westerners would let up on Vineyard and go on to drive in three more total runs the rest of the way, but not without a third Masterman home run in the fourth inning, this time a two-run rocket to have himself a day. An RBI single by the Sharks gave them another run, but it would certainly not be enough to overpower Masterman and his Danbury squad.
