Keene Swamp Bats 11, Upper Valley Nighthawks 7

The Keene Swamp Bats (5-5) won their third straight game, this one over the hosting Upper Valley Nighthawks (7-4) in White River Junction on Friday night. Kaleb Corbett (University of Louisville) picked up his first win of the season in relief for the Swamp Bats (1.0 innings pitched, 4 hits, 4 runs, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts), while fellow reliever Cole Garrett (Liberty University) suffered the loss for the Nighthawks (1.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R/ER, 2 BB, 1 K).

Keene struck first in this matchup in the second inning by way of a two-run double from center fielder and leadoff hitter Michael Nyisztor (Rutgers University). Upper Valley cut their deficit to one run in the fourth inning with the help of a sacrifice fly by second baseman Kyle Novak (James Madison University) to make it a 2-1 contest. The Swamp Bats extended their lead over the opponent in the seventh with a two-run inning via a sacrifice out and then an RBI double from left fielder Thomas Joseph (Jacksonville University) to make it 4-1 in favor of the visiting team.

Upper Valley stormed back in the home half of the seventh with a four-run campaign to take a 5-4 lead. Center fielder Brett Callahan (St. Joseph’s University) began the scoring with a two-run home run, followed by an RBI single by first baseman William Sullivan (Troy University) and another RBI from third baseman Ronald Evans (University of North Carolina Wilmington). Nonetheless, Keene exploded in the top of the eighth inning with seven runners crossing home plate to make it 11-5 in favor of the Swamp Bats. A bases-loaded walk, a two-run base-hit, an RBI single, a two-run triple and a sacrifice fly did the job for Keene. The Nighthawks scored one run apiece in the eighth and ninth innings, but it would not be enough to overpower the Swamp Bats.
