Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 7, Mystic Schooners 4

The visiting Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (8-1) won their third straight game with a victory over the Mystic Schooners (5-4) on Thursday evening. Starting pitcher Will Greer (Bucknell University) earned the win for the Sharks (5.0 innings pitched, 5 hits, 3 runs/earned runs, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts), while fellow starter Joseph Ryan (Boston College) suffered the loss for the Schooners (4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 5 K). Riley Phillips (University of Louisville) secured the save for Martha’s Vineyard in the final two innings.

The Sharks struck first in this matchup in the third inning with a sacrifice fly by left fielder Collin Shapiro (University of Massachusetts Amherst), who also drove in Vineyard’s second run of the game in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI base-hit. First baseman Ryan Hernandez (University of Houston) blew open the game in the same inning with a bases-clearing double to make it 5-0 in favor of the visiting team. Nonetheless, Mystic clawed their way back into the game in the bottom half of the inning by way of two longballs. A solo home run from the bat of designated hitter Christopher Brito (Rutgers University) and a two-run shot by first baseman Joseph Carpenter (University of Delaware) cut the Schooners’ deficit to just two runs.

The Sharks tacked on two more runs in the top half of the sixth via an error and a fielder’s choice to extend their lead to 7-3. A sacrifice fly by Mystic third baseman Charlie Pagliarini (Fairfield University) made it a 7-4 game in the home half of the sixth inning was the last run to be scored in this one.

Winnipesaukee Muskrats 2, Vermont Mountaineers 7

The hosting Vermont Mountaineers (5-4) won their third straight game, this time over the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (5-5) in Montpelier on Thursday night. Tucker Wittman (University of Massachusetts Amherst) picked up the victory in relief for the ‘Neers (2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K), and ‘Skrats starter Drew Martin (Eckerd College) bore the loss in a rough appearance (2.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R/ER, 3 BB, 2 K).

Winnipesaukee did score first in this one in the top of the first inning via a two-run home run by center fielder Cole Johnson (Kansas State University), but that would be the only instance in which the visitors crossed home plate in this matchup.

Vermont catcher Matt Oldham (Elon University) hit his first home run of the season in the second inning with a solo dinger to make it a 2-1 game early on. The Mountaineers went on to score three more times in the third inning to make it a 4-2 ballgame, highlighted by an RBI single from the bat of third baseman Evan Giordano (SUNY Stony Brook) and an RBI double by designated hitter Jeffrey Holtz (Xavier University). Vermont brought home their final three runners of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning via an RBI single, a sacrifice out and a sacrifice fly to bring the score to a winning 7-4 for the home team.

Sanford Mainers 2, Keene Swamp Bats 4

The Keene Swamp Bats (4-5) earned their second straight victory on Thursday night with a close win over the visiting Sanford Mainers (2-7) at Alumni Field. Dylan Sabia (Central Connecticut State University) grabbed the win in relief for the Swamp Bats (2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 2 K), and fellow reliever Brian Craven (Davidson College) was handed the loss for the Mainers (0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R/ER, 0 BB, 0 K).

There was no score until the bottom of the fifth inning when Keene’s shortstop Daniel DiGeorgio (Rutgers University) crushed a two-run homer. However, the Mainers immediately tied the contest up in the visitor’s half of the sixth via a two-run single from catcher Dayne Leonard (Virginia Tech University). The Swamp Bats were set on winning this one as first baseman Noah Martinez (Central Connecticut State University) brought home one runner via a double and catcher Jared Payne (Polk State College) drove in another with a single gave their squad a two-run, and eventual winning, lead.

Bristol Blues 4, Danbury Westerners 5

The hosting Danbury Westerners (5-6) handed the Bristol Blues (1-10) their staggering ninth straight loss in a hard-fought matchup on Wednesday night. Renn Lints (Bucknell University) picked up the win in relief for the Westies and his first of the season (0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K), while fellow reliever Dominic Agron (Wofford College) took the loss for the struggling Blues (5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K). Ryan Smith (Boston College) earned the save for Danbury.

The Westerners struck first with two runs in the first inning by an RBI from left fielder Cameron Masterman (University of Louisville) and an RBI base-hit by catcher Jack Payton (University of Louisville). Masterman tacked on another run for his team in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to make it 3-0 in favor of Danbury.

That three-nothing score remained until the top of the seventh inning when right fielder Christopher Davis (Duke University) scored off of a wild pitch to cut Bristol’s deficit to just two runs. The Blues snagged the lead in the eighth with a three-run inning with the help of an error by the Westerners, a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice to make it a 4-3 ballgame in favor of the visitors. Danbury came back in the home half of the eighth by taking advantage of a Bristol error and bases-loaded walk to give themselves their eventual winning 5-4 go-ahead lead.

Newport Gulls 1, Ocean State Waves 12

The Ocean State Waves (3-7) blew out the visiting Newport Gulls (6-3) in an 11-run win on Thursday night. Starting pitcher Nicholas Payero (Seton Hall University) took home the win to earn his first of the year in a stellar, scoreless performance on the bump for the Waves (5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K), while Gulls starter Blake Mahmood (Tulane University) was handed the loss in his second appearance of the summer (1.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R/ER, 2 BB, 0 K).

The Waves crashed in the home half of the second inning by scoring six runs off of Mahmood to get the rout started. Player of the week and Ocean State’s stud left fielder Travis Honeyman (Boston College) led off the inning with a home run, followed by an RBI double by shortstop Dylan Hoy (Marist College), a two-run single from center fielder Albert Choi (New Jersey Institute of Technology), a sacrifice out by third baseman Nick Hassan (Kennesaw State University) and an RBI base hit via catcher Johnny Tuccillo (Stony Brook University). Ocean State scored twice more in the fourth inning with the help of an RBI single by second baseman Kyle Maves (Quinnipiac University) and an RBI from Hassan to make it an 8-0 contest.

Three more runs came for the Waves in the bottom of the fifth inning via a balk, a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Slade Wilks (University of Southern Mississippi) and a solo home run from the bat of first baseman Andrew Jenner (Winthrop University). That would be the final time the Waves crashed in this matchup. Newport avoided the shutout in the ninth inning with a bases-loaded walk drawn by designated hitter Spenser Smith (Northeastern University).
