Game 1: Upper Valley Nighthawks 1, North Adams Steeplecats 3

Game 1 of Wednesday’s doubleheader between the Upper Valley Nighthawks and the North Adams Steeplecats ended victorious for the home team ‘Cats in a relatively quiet game. North Adams starting pitcher Wilfrido Valenzuela (Bloomfield College) picked up the win in a strong outing (5.0 innings pitched, 5 hits, 1 run/earned run, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts), while Upper Valley starter Cade Lommel (Creighton University) suffered the loss in his second appearance of the summer (5.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 11 K). Kaleb Sophy (Shippensburg University) recorded the save for the Steeplecats.

North Adams struck first in the low-scoring seven-inning Game 1 matchup with three runs in the home half of the first inning. Second baseman John Marti (University of Albany) drove two runners home with a single followed by another RBI single from third baseman Aidan Wilde (University of Massachusetts Amherst). Nighthawks first baseman William Sullivan (Troy University) got one run back via a solo home run in the fourth inning, his fourth of the 2021 season, but it would not be enough to come back against the Steeplecats.

Game 2: Upper Valley Nighthawks 3, North Adams Steeplecats 0

The Upper Valley Nighthawks (7-3) split the doubleheader against the North Adams Steeplecats (3-4-2) in shut out fashion in Game 2 on Wednesday evening. Nighthawks starting pitcher Cameron Bye (Wichita State University) earned the victory (4.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K) while ‘Cats starter Jordan Yoder (Lafayette College) took the loss (4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 6 K). Week 1 NECBL pitcher of the week Zane Kmietek (Marist College) picked up the save for Upper Valley.

Left fielder Alan Roden (Creighton University) drove in his Nighthawks’ first run of the game in the fourth inning with an RBI single. Upper Valley scored their next two and final runs of the doubleheader in the fifth inning via two more RBI singles from designated hitter Parker Haskin (Elon University) and shortstop Max Viera (Northeastern University).

Ocean State Waves 6, Mystic Schooners 7

The Mystic Schooners (5-3) walked off in extra innings on their home turf against the Ocean State Waves (2-7) on Wednesday night. Mystic reliever Matthew Bollenbacher (East Tennessee State University) earned the win for the Schooners (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) and fellow relief pitcher Zach Fernandez (University of Rhode Island) was handed the loss for the Waves as he gave up the opponent’s walkoff run (0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K).

Mystic got themselves on the board first in the third inning with a four-run campaign. Third baseman Daniel Crossen (Northeastern University) launched a two-run home run to begin the scoring, followed by another two-run homer by first baseman Chris Brito (Rutgers University). The Waves made a slight crash to get one run back in the fourth inning via an RBI base-hit by catcher Johnny Tuccillo (Stony Brook University) to make it 4-1.

The ball continued to fly for the Schooners as left fielder Christian Policelli (United States Naval Academy) hit his first home run of the year, a solo shot to give Mystic back their cushiony four-run lead. However, Ocean State was not going to back down. They cut their deficit to just 5-3 with one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but Mystic got one back via an RBI single from right fielder Barry Walsh (Boston College). Waves player of the week left fielder Travis Honeyman (Boston College) crushed a two-run shot to make it a 6-5 game in the eighth. Designated hitter Nick Hassan (Kennesaw State University) tied things up with an RBI base-hit, but Mystic’s catcher Jerry Huntzinger (Xavier University) became the walkoff Schooners hero in the bottom of the 10th inning with an RBI single.

North Shore Navigators 7, Sanford Mainers 4

The visiting North Shore Navigators (5-3-2) came out of their matchup against the Sanford Mainers (2-6) victorious at Goodall Park on Wednesday night. Starting pitcher Jackson Emus (Princeton University) came away with the win to earn his first of the summer (5.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R/ER, 1 BB, 4 K). Blake Bennett (Central Alabama Community College) bore the loss in relief (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R/ER, 3 BB, 0 K) of starter Josh Joy (University of Southern Maine). Zach Chappell (University of North Florida) recorded the save for the Navs.

The Mainers came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning with a four-run campaign. First baseman Ubaldo Lopez (Georgetown University) drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to get things going, followed by a bases-clearing double from the bat of designated hitter Ryan Turenne (University of Maine Orono). Those four runs would be the only inning in which Sanford crossed home plate.

North Shore star center fielder Joe Lomuscio (Stanford University) tied things up with just one swing of the bat in the third inning with a booming grand slam, sparking a fire for the Navigators the rest of the way. The game remained tied at four runs apiece until the sixth inning when second baseman Jonathan Luders (Seton Hall University) hit an RBI single to give his team a 5-4 lead. A two-run ninth inning ensured a North Shore win with the help of an RBI triple by designated hitter Matthias Haas (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) and a sacrifice fly from right fielder Jose Aquino (Cisco College).

Winnipesaukee Muskrats 2, Keene Swamp Bats 5

The reigning NECBL champion Keene Swamp Bats (3-5) grabbed a win over the visiting Winnipesaukee Muskrats (5-4) at Alumni Field on Wednesday night. Taylor Lepard (Southern New Hampshire University) picked up the victory in relief in his first appearance of the summer (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 K) while fellow reliever Justin Murray (Dartmouth College) took the loss. Kaleb Corbett (University of Louisville) tallied the save for the Swamp Bats.

Keene’s shortstop David Bryant (Radford University), who went 3-4 at the plate on the day, got the scoring started in the third inning with an RBI base hit to give his team a 1-0 lead. Leading off the visitor’s half of the fourth inning, ‘Skrats right fielder Jake LaPrairie (Tulane University) quickly got that run back with a solo home run to tie the game at one. In the sixth inning, center fielder Joshua Rodriguez (Rutgers University) gave Winnipesaukee a 2-1 lead with another solo homer.

It did not take the Swamp Bats long to tie the game at two runs apiece with an RBI single by center fielder Troy Schreffler (University of Maryland) in the home half of the sixth. Keene took the lead for good this time in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bryant hit another RBI single, followed by another from the bat of third baseman Daniel DiGeorgio (Rutgers University) and one more for good measure by left fielder Thomas Joseph (Jacksonville University). That was all the home team needed to tally their third win of the 2021 season thus far.

Danbury Westerners 10, Newport Gulls 9

The Danbury Westerners (4-5) came out of a tight, back-and-forth game against the hosting Newport Gulls (6-2) victorious on Wednesday night at Cardines Field. Coleman Picard (University of Hartford) picked up the win in the eighth inning for the Westerners (1.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R/ER, 1 BB, 1 K) while fellow reliever Bo Brutti (University of Rhode Island) was given the loss in a short appearance (0.1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K). Noah Jensen (Elon University) earned the save for Danbury.

Catcher Jack Payton (University of Louisville) got the Westerners on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with an RBI single, but designated hitter Justin Guerrera (Fairfield University) gave the Gulls a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning by way of a two-run homer. Newport left fielder Conor Kiely (Stonehill College) gave his squad a 3-1 lead in the second inning with a base-hit single. Danbury tied things up at three runs apiece in the fourth inning with an RBI single by second baseman John Anderson (Georgia Tech) and a sacrifice fly from third baseman Nick Lorusso.

The Westerners exploded in the visitor’s half of the fifth inning with four runs to make it 7-3: an RBI single by shortstop Banks Griffith (Stetson University), a two-run double via Anderson and an RBI double by first baseman Cameron Masterman (University of Louisville) got the job done. A solo homer by shortstop Spenser Smith (Northeastern University) cut Newport’s deficit to three runs in the sixth. The Gulls made a major comeback and took an 8-7 lead in the eighth inning with a pair of two-run singles by way of the bats of center fielder Jordon Rogers (University of Michigan) and right fielder Sam Cochrane (College of Charleston). Danbury’s relentlessness in the top of the ninth inning gave them a 10-8 lead highlighted by a two-run homer by Anderson. Pinch hitter Bryce Hulett (University of Pittsburgh) made it a one-run game with the help of a solo homer to make it a nail-biter in the bottom of the ninth, but the Westerners would not allow the Gulls to have their way at home.

Bristol Blues 0, Valley Blue Sox 11

The visiting Bristol Blues (1-9) were routed, shut out and given their eighth straight loss of the summer by the Valley Blue Sox (7-3) in Holyoke on Wednesday. Starting pitcher John MacCauley (Butler University) earned his first win of the season for the Blue Sox in a beauty of a pitching performance (6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K), and Blues starter Matt Erickson (Yale University) took his second straight loss to start the summer (3.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R/ER, 4 BB, 7 K).

Valley struck first in the first inning of action by way of an RBI single from catcher Cole Andrews (Miami University), who batted 3-5 on the day. Center fielder Brendan Hueth (St. Joseph’s University) scored off of a wild pitch in the second inning to give his squad an early two-run lead. Right fielder Garrett Schultz (Xavier University) followed suit by similarly scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.

Designated hitter Nathan Thomas (St. Joseph’s University) smashed a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a comfortable 7-0 lead over Bristol. In the seventh, Thomas hit a sacrifice fly to drive in another Blue Sox runner, followed by a Hueth run off of another wild pitch committed by the Blues, to make it a 9-0 ballgame. Shortstop Mason LaPlante (Yale University) finished off the crushing of Bristol with a two-run triple in the eighth inning to put away the visitor for good.
