Sanford Mainers 4, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 6

A tight game between the visiting Sanford Mainers (1-4) and the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (5-3) ended victorious for the ‘Skrats with the help of a three-run eighth inning. Winnipesaukee’s Scott Meylan (University of New Orleans) picked up the win in his third appearance of the season (1.0 innings pitched, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strikeout) while Kyle McKernan (Virginia Tech University) was handed the loss (3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 earned runs, 1 BB, 8 K) for the Mainers. Reese Sharp (Indiana University) earned the save in the ninth inning.

Both teams scored two runs in their respective half innings in the third. Sanford center fielder and leadoff hitter Calvin Hewett (Vanderbilt University) blasted a two-run home run to give themselves a quick but short 2-0 lead. Winnipesaukee’s Joshua Rodriguez (Rutgers University) and recent Muskrats hero Will Vergantino (Elon University) responded by driving in two runs by way of an error and a base hit, respectively, to tie things up. Winnipesaukee scored again in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead with the help of another error committed by Sanford. The Mainers immediately tied the game at three runs apiece the very next inning via a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Dominic Freeberger (University of North Carolina at Asheville).

The game would remain tied until the eighth inning when Kohl Abrams (University of North Carolina at Asheville) drove in a runner with an RBI single and Rodriguez followed suit and brought home two with another base hit to give their squad a 6-3 lead. The Mainers would attempt a comeback in the top of the ninth by way of a Dayne Leonard (Virginia Tech University) solo homer, but it would not be enough to overpower the Muskrats.

North Adams Steeplecats 5, North Shore Navigators 5

Extra innings would, once again, not be enough to decide a winner in Sunday’s matchup between the visiting North Adams Steeplecats (1-2-2) and the North Shore Navigators (3-2-2) as these two teams tie against each other for the second time in this young 2021 season. Matthew Semon (St. John’s University) got the start for the Steepelecats (3.0 IP, 2 H, 4 R/ER, 5 BB, 6 K) as well as Jay Driver (Harvard University) for the Navigators (2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R/ER, 4 BB, 2 K).

North Shore struck first in the first inning with the help of a wild pitch by Semon, but their lead did not last long as North Adams took the lead in the second inning by way of a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a bases-loaded walk in two straight at-bats. The Navs scored three times in the fourth inning to give themselves a 4-2 lead and scored in similar fashion to the Steeplecats via a bases-loaded walk and hit-by-pitch in back-to-back at-bats, and then a sacrifice fly by center fielder Joe Lomuscio (Stanford University).

North Adams came back to tie the game at four in the seventh and eighth innings thanks to a Jeremy Lea (Pacific University) solo homer and a Braden Barry (West Virginia University) RBI double. Extra innings were forced after neither team scored in the ninth. Neither team scored in the 10th inning, either; however, both brought home one runner in the 11th. Charles Middleton (Pacific University) crossed home plate for the Steeplecats and left fielder Jake McElroy (College of the Holy Cross) tied the game at five runs with a base hit. That would, in fact, be all she wrote.

Keene Swamp Bats 4, Upper Valley Nighthawks 8

The Upper Valley Nighthawks (5-1) took down the visiting Keene Swamp Bats (2-4) in Hartford on Sunday evening. Jordy Allard (University of Richmond) got the start for the victorious Nighthawks, as did Cole Stallings (Stetson University) for the Swamp Bats.

Keene found themselves in a hole early on as Upper Valley scored one run in the third inning and another three in the fifth. The Swamp Bats put themselves on the scoreboard in the seventh inning by tallying two runs, but the Nighthawks responded with three runs in the home half of the inning to give themselves a comfortable 7-2 lead. Keene got two runs back, but it would not be enough against Upper Valley on their home turf.

Ocean State Waves 3, Valley Blue Sox 4

An extremely close game between the visiting Ocean State Waves (2-6) and the Valley Blue Sox (6-3) ended in favor of the home team to give them their league-high sixth win of the summer. Ryan Towle (University of Massachusetts Lowell) took home the victory for Valley (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 3 K) in relief and Thomas Balboni (Northeastern University) suffered the loss in relief, as well, in his first appearance of 2021 (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K). Daniel Padysak (Charleston Southern University) tallied the save for the Blue Sox on Sunday evening.

The scoreboard remained empty until the fifth inning until a pair of RBI singles by right fielder Kyle Hawes (University of Hartford) and center fielder Garrett Schultz (Xavier University) gave Valley a 2-0 lead halfway through the matchup. The Waves wasted no time crashing in the sixth inning to tie things up with the help of an RBI double by center fielder Albert Choi (New Jersey Institute of Technology) and another RBI from first baseman Xavier Vargas (University of Rhode Island).

The final runs of the game for both teams were scored in the seventh inning. Designated hitter Slade Wilks (SCHOOL) gave Ocean State a 3-2 lead via a walk and an error, but the Blue Sox grabbed the lead in the bottom of the inning by way of a two-run double from the bat of Schultz. That would also be all she wrote in this particular matchup.

Newport Gulls 6, Bristol Blues 2

The Newport Gulls (5-1) handed the Bristol Blues (1-7) their fifth straight loss of the young season at Muzzy Field on Sunday evening. The Gulls put on an extraordinary show on the mound by only needing two arms through nine innings. Starting pitcher Jimmy Kingsbury (Villanova University) earned the win and his second of the season in a stellar performance (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) and Liam LeVangie (Bryant University) recorded the save to finish off the game. Blues starter Jacob Moskowitz (Southwestern University) bore the loss at home and recorded his second of the season (4.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K).

Newport put themselves on the board first in the first inning of action on a unique scoring play. Moskowitz made a pickoff attempt at first base and right fielder Sam Cochrane (College of Charleston) scored on the play to make it a 1-0 game early. The Gulls extended their lead over Bristol in the second inning on a two-run single by shortstop Dawson Brigman (Santa Clara University) to give his team a three-run lead. The Blues responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning by taking advantage of an error by Newport and bring the score to 3-1.

An RBI double by second baseman Justin Guerrera (Fairfield University) further extended the Gulls’ lead over the Blues in the top of the fourth inning. Bristol tacked on their second and final run of the matchup in the home half of the fifth to make it a 4-2 ballgame. Newport ensured their lead over the home team in the seventh inning with an RBI single from CJ Pittaro (Vanderbilt University) as well as driving home a runner on a wild pitch to give themselves a 6-2 lead.
