North Shore Navigators 5, Upper Valley Nighthawks 14

The Upper Valley Nighthawks (5-1) dominated the visiting North Shore Navigators (3-3-1) in Hartford, Vermont, on Saturday night to tally their tied league-leading fifth win of the 2021 season.

Bristol Blues 6, Danbury Westerners 8

The Danbury Westerners (3-4) picked up their second victory in a row, this time by defeating the Bristol Blues (1-6) to hand the visiting team their fifth straight loss. Michael Farinelli (Middlebury College) picked up the win for the Westerners in relief (1.1 innings pitched, 4 hits, 1 run/earned run, 0 walk, 3 strikeouts), while starting pitcher Mark Faello (Hofstra University) was handed the loss for Bristol (4.0 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). Danbury’s Noah Jensen (Elon University) earned the save in his third appearance of the summer (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K).

The Westerners got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning after an RBI single by left fielder Matt Zaffino (Hamilton College) and a two-run home run to center field by second baseman Banks Griffith (Stetson University) to make it 3-0. The Blues got on the board in the top of the fourth after a home run by center fielder Mark Coley (University of Rhode Island). In the bottom of the fourth, Danbury opened the floodgates by scoring four runs. An error by Blues second baseman Nate Vigeant (Rhode Island College) scored a run, and a two-run single by center fielder Justin Jordan (Sacred Heart University) made it 6-1 in favor of Danbury. The final run of the inning came from a base-hit by right fielder Dillon Lifrieri (University of North Carolina at Wilmington) that hit the first base bag and trickled into the outfield to score a run.

The Blues did not go down without putting up a tough fight. A two-run triple by left fielder Anthony Galason (Elon University) in the top of the fifth got Bristol back into the game, cutting the Danbury lead to 7-3. After scoring a run from a sacrifice in the top of the sixth, the Blues got more production from Galason who homered to cut the lead to 7-5. The Blues got within a run in the top of the eight after an RBI double by first baseman Brennen Dorighi (Wofford College), but could not get the tying run across. A wild pitch gave the Westerners an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.

Vermont Mountaineers 11, Keene Swamp Bats 8

The Vermont Mountaineers (3-3) brought their overall record up to .500 with a comeback win over the home team Keene Swamp Bats (2-3) on Saturday night. Mountaineers reliever Cole Roland (Dartmouth College) secured the win in the final two innings of action (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K). Erry Baldayac (Rhode Island College) was took the loss in his second appearance of the season for Vermont (1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 K).

The Swamp Bats got on the board first in this matchup by way of a three-run home run to left field from second baseman Brandon Taylor (Bryant University) in the second inning. Keene tacked two more runs on to their lead in the third inning to give themselves a 5-0 lead. At last, the Mountaineers scored in the fourth inning by way of an RBI single from third baseman Evan Giordano (SUNY Stony Brook) to cut their deficit to just four runs. The Mountaineers erupted quickly with three runs in the top of the seventh inning, highlighted by an RBI bunt single by designated hitter Tommy Courtney (University of Pennsylvania) to cut Keene’s lead to 5-4. The Swamp Bats got those three runs back quickly in the bottom of the seventh to extend their lead to 8-4.

In the top of the eighth, Vermont got their spark from shortstop Keagan Calero (University of Massachusetts Lowell), who continued his impressive season by hitting his second grand slam in as many nights, and this one tied the game up eight runs apiece. The Mountaineers got their first lead of the night in the top of the ninth inning after a solo homer by right fielder Curtis Robison (Pennsylvania State University), and scored two more runs to make it an 11-8 ballgame.

Newport Gulls 8, Ocean State Waves 6

The Newport Gulls (4-1) continued their strong start to the 2021 NECBL season with a road win over the Ocean State Waves (2-5) at Old Mountain Field. Reliever Grayson Moore (Vanderbilt University) earned the victory for the Gulls (4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R/ER, 3 BB, 3 K) and starter Tyler Roche (St. John’s University) suffered the loss on Saturday night in a rough outing (3.0 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K).

The Gulls got things started early with a two-run single by shortstop Spenser Smith (Northeastern University) in the top of the first inning. In his first starting appearance of the season, second baseman Dawson Brigman (Santa Clara University) hit a solo homer to extend Newport’s lead to 3-0. However, the Waves came crashing and were quick to tie things up in the bottom of the third, thanks in large part to a two-run bomb by catcher Johnny Tuccillo (Stony Brook University). Things got whacky in the top of the fourth as Newport scored four runs to take a 7-3 without getting a ball out of the infield.

Ocean State got the spark they needed in the home half of the eighth inning, starting with a two-run double by shortstop Dylan Hoy (Marist College) and a sacrifice fly by center fielder Albert Choi (New Jersey institute of Technology) which cut the Newport lead to 7-6. The Gulls tacked on an insurance run in the top of the 9th to make it an 8-6 game and secure the victory.

Valley Blue Sox 6, Mystic Schooners 9

The Mystic Schooners (4-2) defended their home field at Fitch High School, taking down the visiting Valley Blue Sox (5-3). Ben Fero (Stony Brook University) grabbed the win in relief (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 2 K), while fellow reliever Alexarmando Diaz (University of Rhode Island) was handed the loss (1.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R/ER, 1 BB, 0 K).

Mystic struck first in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by center fielder Tucker Flint (University of Maryland), who finished the day 3-4 at the plate in his first game of the summer. A solo home-run by the scorching hot left fielder Brian Hart (Marist College) and a RBI double by catcher Jake Balderston (Western New England College) gave the Blue Sox a 2-1 advantage in the top of the second. In the home half of the fourth inning, the Schooners tied the game from a base-hit by designated hitter Joseph Carpenter (University of Delaware), and put another run on the board to take a 3-2 lead after four innings. The back-and-fourth continued after the Blue Sox tied the game at 3-3 thanks to a solo homer from the bat of first baseman Luke Franzoni (Xavier University). An RBI double by Balderston gave Valley a 4-3 advantage halfway through the game.

In the top of the seventh, Valley got another home run, this time courtesy of third baseman Nate Thomas (St. Joseph’s University) to make it 5-3. The Schooners responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, capped off by a two-run blast by first baseman Christopher Brito (Rutgers University). The power display continued in the bottom of the eighth as Mystic third baseman Daniel Crossen (Northeastern University) hit a two-run bomb to make it 9-5 Schooners. The Blue Sox refused to go down without a fight, and got another home run by Thomas to make it a 9-6 ballgame.
