Newport Gulls 4, Mystic Schooners 6

The visiting Newport Gulls (2-1) lost their unbeaten record as they were defeated by the Mystic Schooners (3-1) on Thursday night. In relief of starting pitcher Rojan Handa (Yale University), Sean Sposato (University of Rhode Island) picked up the win at home (3.0 innings pitched, 3 hits, 2 runs, 0 earned runs, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts). Gulls starter Brandyn Garcia (Quinnipiac University) took the loss as he gave up half of Mystic’s total runs (3.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R/ER, 4 BB, 5 K). The Schooners’ Tim Blaisdell (University of Hartford) earned the save in the ninth inning to shut down the road team (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K).

Mystic came out swinging in the third inning by scoring three runs, firstly off of an RBI double by right fielder Barry Walsh (Boston College) and then a two-run single from first baseman Addison Kopack (University of Rhode Island). Newport got themselves on the board in the fourth inning courtesy of an error by the Schooners’ Christopher Brito (Rutgers University) to make it a 3-1 ballgame. Mystic then scored one run in both the fifth and sixth innings, firstly by way of a sacrifice double play by Kopack, and then a fielder’s choice by Brito to make it 5-1. Gulls centerfielder Conor Kiely (Stonehill College) drove in one runner with a single and shortstop Lewis Barnum brought home another with a sacrifice putout in the top of the seventh inning.

The Schooners scored in the bottom of the inning off of a fielder’s choice to bring the score to 6-3. However, Newport was not done there as they made it a 6-4 game in the eighth inning with the help of left fielder Billy Butler (University of Rhode Island) who hit an RBI single. That would be the end of Newport’s comeback as Blaisdell put them away in the ninth inning.

North Shore Navigators 7, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 8

A five-run ninth-inning comeback and walk-off by the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (3-3) helped them top the North Shore Navigators (2-2-1) at home on Thursday night. The Muskrats’ Nate Espelin (University of Dayton) earned the victory in the ninth inning (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K) and the Navs’ Jack Wallace (Franklin Pierce University) bore the loss. Wallace allowed the ‘Skrats to score all five winning runs in the ninth.

Winnipesaukee struck first in the first inning by way of an RBI single from Ramon Jiminez (Boston College). A double by North Shore third baseman Jonathan Luders (Seton Hall University) quickly tied things at one run apiece in the second inning. A third-inning two-run home run by Navs star Joe Lomuscio (Stanford University) gave his squad a 3-1 lead and continued a scoring domino effect for North Shore. The team scored three more runs in the fourth inning by way of a bases-loaded walk given to first baseman Logan Bravo (Harvard University) followed by an RBI from catcher Tristan Latham (Pomona-Pitzer College) to give the road team a seemingly comfortable 5-1 lead.

After the Navigators scored another run in the sixth inning via a sacrifice fly by Bravo and a seventh-inning solo home run by second baseman Jacob Gustin (Bryant University) to make it 7-1, Winnipesaukee had finally seen enough. The home team scored twice off of a pair of RBI singles by Jake LaPrairie (Tulane University) and Josh Rodriguez (Rutgers University) to cut North Shore’s lead down to 7-3. The Muskrats exploded with a five-run ninth inning, with the help of a solo home run by Nick Marrero, an RBI single from Matthew Overton, an error by North Shore to bring in two runs and lastly, a walk-off single by Will Vergantino to save the day and become a Winnipesaukee hero.

Danbury Westerners 3, Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 8

The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (3-0) keep their undefeated record intact with a win over the visiting Danbury Westerners (1-4) and hand the Westerners their fourth straight loss of the young season. In relief of starting pitcher Jackson Nezuh (Florida State University), Vineyard’s Drew Mead (Marymount University) secured the win (2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 3 K) while Danbury’s starter Kyle Roche (Franklin and Marshall College) was roughed up in his second start of the season and suffered the loss (3.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K).

The Sharks jumped on top early on in the first inning with an RBI single by right fielder Levi Usher (University of Louisville) and an error committed by Danbury to bring in another runner. Martha’s Vineyard scored three more times in the third inning with help from another error by the Westerners to bring home two men and an RBI single by catcher Matt Donlon (University of Connecticut) to extend their lead to 5-0.

The Westerners would get themselves on the board at last in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single by Connor Harding (University of Connecticut) and make it a 5-1 ballgame. The Sharks took that run back in the fifth inning via a solo home run by shortstop Jake Berger (Harvard University). Vineyard scored twice in the next inning by way of an RBI single from centerfielder Tommy Seidl (University of Alabama) and a sacrifice putout from Donlon to make the score 8-1. Danbury attempted to make a comeback in the eighth inning, but it would not be enough to overpower the red-hot Sharks, especially on their home turf at the Shark Tank.

Upper Valley Nighthawks 7, Vermont Mountaineers 10

The Vermont Mountaineers (2-3-0) handed the Upper Valley Nighthawks (4-1-0) their first loss of the season with help from some late-inning fireworks. Brendan O’Donnell (University of Connecticut) picked up his first win of the young season (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K), while pitcher of the week Zane Kmietek (Marist College) was roughed up for the loss (0.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 0 K).

The Nighthawks started strong after scoring 2 quick runs in the top of the first inning, followed by a solo home run by Luca Trigiani (St. Joseph's University) in the second to make it 3-0. A two-run shot by Ronald Evans (University of North Carolina Wilmington) in the top of the fourth inning extended the Nighthawk lead to 6-1. A wild pitch by Mountaineer right-hander Parker Scott (Rutgers University-New Brunswick) in the fifth inning made it a 7-1 game in favor of Upper Valley.

Just as it seems like the lead for the Nighthawks was safe, the Mountaineer bats roared to life. An RBI single by designated hitter Zachary Stevens (United States Naval Academy) began the comeback. The Mountaineers scored four runs in the seventh inning, thanks in part by a wild pitch by Nighthawks reliever Tyler Spitzbarth (Valdosta State University), as well as a dropped third strike that plated third baseman Evan Giordano (SUNY Stony Brook). Vermont tied things up in the eighth after an RBI double by Giordano, and quickly pulled ahead for good thanks to an RBI base hit by Jack Frank (Michigan State University).
