Game 1: Martha’s Vineyard Sharks vs. Valley Blue Sox - Postponed

The first game of the visiting Valley Blue Sox and the Marttha’s Vineyard Sharks’ Friday night doubleheader was postponed due to inclement weather.

This contest will be made up at a later date to be determined.

Game 2: Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 12, Valley Blue Sox 6

Due to the postponement of Game 1 of the scheduled doubleheader the visiting Valley Blue Sox (13-9) and the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (13-8) played a nine-inning contest at the Shark Tank on Friday night in which the Sharks came out victorious. Starting pitcher Jackson Nezuh (Florida State University) picked up his first win of the season for the Vineyard in a fantastic outing (5 innings pitched, 3 hits, 1 run/earned run, 0 walks, 6 strikeouts) and fellow starter Jonathan Kelly (Xavier University) suffered the loss for the Blue Sox in just his first start but seventh appearance of the summer (2.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R/ER, 3 BB, 1 K).

Valley designated hitter Cole Andrews (Miami University) started off the high-scoring game with a first inning solo home run, a lead that would be erased in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a six-run campaign by Martha’s Vineyard that featured a two-run double by catcher Jorge Corona (Louisiana Tech University) and an RBI single by designated hitter Spencer Bramwell (Colorado Mesa University). The Sharks extended their lead to 8-1 in the home half of the fourth with the help of a balk and another RBI double by Corona.

The Blue Sox tallied one run in the visitor’s half of the sixth inning but Martha’s Vineyard exploded for a four-run bottom of the inning to bring the score to 12-2 courtesy of a solo homer by Corona to add on to his monster day at the plate as well as RBIs from right fielder Trey Leonard (University of Louisville), second baseman Jadyn Jackson (Georgia Tech) and left fielder Collin Shapiro (University of Massachusetts Amherst). An eighth inning grand slam by Blue Sox catcher Jake Balderston (Western New England College) made it a 12-6 ballgame, but the Sharks’ lead would not be touched the rest of the way.

Keene Swamp Bats 10, North Adams SteepleCats 6

The Keene Swamp Bats (15-6) won their third straight ballgame with a win over the visiting North Adams SteepleCats (11-9-2) on Friday night at Alumni Field. Three relief pitchers earned decisions as the Swamp Bats’ Gage Bradley (Vanderbilt University) picked up the win in his first appearance of the summer (1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 1 K) and Camden Lovrich (Jacksonville State University) was handed the loss for the SteepleCats (3 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K). Bryce Hellgeth (University of Dayton) secured his third save of the season for Keene.

A first-inning solo dinger by North Adams catcher Jeremy Lea (University of the Pacific) got his team on the board first but Keene quickly stormed back in the bottom of the inning with two runs from third baseman Daniel DiGeorgio (Rutgers University) and right fielder Thomas Joseph (Jacksonville University) to grab an early 2-1 lead. The SteepleCats got their lead back in the visitor’s half of the fourth inning via a two-run homer by right fielder Charles Middleton (University of the Pacific) and a solo dinger by left fielder Braden Golinski (United States Military Academy) but the Swamp Bats scored two of their own in the home half to make it a 4-4 tie game courtesy of RBI singles from catcher Jared Payne (Polk State College) and left fielder Matt Almonte (Pace University).

Keene stole their lead back again in the bottom of the fifth inning with an explosive five-run campaign that featured a three-run homer by center fielder Troy Schreffler (University of Maryland) to bring the score to 9-4. A two-run home run from North Adams first baseman John Marti (University of Albany) in the top of the seventh scored his squad’s final runs of the ballgame and a sacrifice fly from Swamp Bats designated hitter Michael Nyisztor (Rutgers University) in the eighth inning capped off the scoring in this contest.
