Upper Valley Nighthawks 10, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 7

The visiting Upper Valley Nighthawks (14-9) handed the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (7-15) their fourth straight loss with a victory in Laconia on Wednesday night. Nighthawks starting pitcher Jordy Allard (University of Richmond) picked up this third win of the season (5 innings pitched, 8 hits, 4 runs, 2 earned runs, 0 walks, 6 strikeouts) while fellow starter Josh Lajoie (St. John’s University) bore his second loss in as many appearances for the Muskrats (1.1 IP, 4 H, 6 R/ER, 3 BB, 4 K).

A three-run top of the first inning gave Upper Valley a quick lead thanks to a two-run single by infielder and outfielder William Sullivan (Troy University) and an RBI double from infielder Ronald Evans (University of North Carolina Wilmington). Winnipesaukee got one back and made it a 3-1 contest in the bottom of the opening inning with an RBI base hit by catcher Gustavo Sosa (Rutgers University). Another three-run second inning for the ‘Hawks extended their lead to 6-1 courtesy of a three-run home run by Player of the Week and infielder Max Viera (Northeastern University). Both squads drove home one run in the third inning to bring the score to 7-2 early on.

Another run via a sacrifice fly by Upper Valley designated hitter Gehrig Anglin (Wright State University) brought his team’s lead to 8-2 in the top of the fourth inning, but a fifth-inning two-run home run by ‘Skrats center fielder Joshua Rodriguez (Rutgers University) made it an 8-4 ballgame. A two-run eighth inning by both teams made it 10-6 and Winnipesaukee would score once more in the bottom of the ninth, but it would not be enough to overpower the Nighthawks.

Sanford Mainers vs. Vermont Mountaineers - Suspended

Wednesday night’s matchup between the visiting Sanford Mainers and the Vermont Mountaineers was suspended in the top of the fifth inning due to a lighting malfunction in Montpelier. The ballgame is set to resume on Saturday, July 17, when Sanford returns to Vermont.

A two-run top of the first inning for the Mainers gave them an early 2-0 lead, but the Mountaineers got one back in the home half of the opening inning. The ‘Neers tallied five more runs in the bottom of the third inning with the help of an RBI single by Matt Oldham (Elon University), a two-run single from Curtis Robison (Pennsylvania State University) and another two-run base hit by Connor Bertsch (Dartmouth College).
