Game 1: Danbury Westerners 12, Ocean State Waves 4

The June 19 ballgame between the visiting Ocean State Waves and the Danbury Westerners that was suspended in the second inning due to rain resumed as Game 1 of a doubleheader at Rogers Park on Tuesday. The Westerners had scored seven runs on the 19th before Mother Nature had other plans. Rain cut the rest of the contest short on Tuesday, as well, to six innings. Danbury relief pitcher Ethan Clough (Long Beach State University) earned his first win of the season (4 innings pitched, 6 hits, 2 runs/earned runs, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts), and Waves starting pitcher Cody Whitten (Winthrop University) suffered the loss in his fifth start of the summer (1.2 IP, 3 H, 7 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K).

The Waves scored their only two runs in this portion of the ballgame in the top of the third inning by way of a pass ball and an RBI single by catcher Nick Hassan (Kennesaw State University) to make it a 7-2 contest. The Westerners wasted no time adding to their existing lead in the home half of the third by way of a pair of solo home runs by third baseman Nicholas Lorusso (University of Maryland) and right fielder Hank Thomas (Ohio State University) plus an RBI base hit from center fielder Justin Jordan (Sacred Heart University) and an error to bring the score to 11-2.

A fourth-inning RBI single from Lorusso made it a 12-2 ballgame, and a fifth-inning RBI double from catcher Jack Payton (University of Louisville) and an RBI base hit by designated hitter Justin Kapuscinski (Marist College) gave their Westies squad an eventual winning 14-2 lead before the rain shut things down once again.

Keene Swamp Bats 4, Sanford Mainers 3

The visiting Keene Swamp Bats (13-6) won a close game over the Sanford Mainers (6-15) at Goodall Park on Tuesday night. Swamp Bats reliever Jake Berry (University of Virginia) picked up his first win in his first appearance of the season (2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R/ER, 2 BB, 4 K), and Mainers starting pitcher Matthew Aronson (University of Massachusetts Amherst) took on his second straight loss (4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R/ER, 2 BB, 3 K). Grant Besser (Florida Southwestern State College) recorded the save for Keene.

A two-run top of the second inning that featured an RBI by Swamp Bats third baseman Zach Arnold (Louisiana State University) and an RBI single from catcher Axel Melendez (Florida Southwestern State College) gave the visiting team an early 2-0 advantage. Sanford tied the game in the home half of the fourth with the help of an RBI base hit by first baseman Dominic Freeberger (University of North Carolina Asheville) and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.

Another two-run inning from Keene in the visitor’s half of the fifth inning highlighted by a sacrifice fly by second baseman David Bryant (Radford University) and an RBI single by shortstop Daniel DiGeorgio (Rutgers University) gave their Swamp Bats their lead back to make it a 4-2 ballgame. The Mainers attempted a ninth-inning comeback with a two-out solo home run by infielder Martin Higgins (St. John’s University), but it would not be enough to overpower Keene in this one.

A first-inning two-run home run by North Shore first baseman Logan Bravo (Harvard University) gave his squad an early 2-0 lead that would be extended in the fifth inning with the help of an RBI single by designated hitter Ryan Marra (Brown University). A wild pitch thrown by Vermont in the sixth inning extended the Navs’s lead to 4-0 and a ninth-inning RBI base hit by catcher Cal Christofori (Yale University) capped off North Shore’s scoring for the evening in the Green Mountain State.
