Game 1: Sanford Mainers 3, Upper Valley Nighthawks 2

In Game 1 of Monday’s doubleheader between the visiting Sanford Mainers and the Upper Valley Nighthawks, the Mainers came away victorious with a tie-breaking run in the final and seventh inning in White River Junction. Sanford starting pitcher Jacob Edwards (University of North Carolina Asheville) tossed five innings (7 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned run, 1 walk, four strikeouts), and fellow starter Alex Theis (Wright State University) threw 3-⅔ innings for the Nighthawks (2 H, 2 R/ER, 3 BB, 5 K).

Upper Valley scored first in the bottom of the opening inning courtesy of an RBI single by right fielder Alan Roden (Creighton University), a lead that would soon be taken away by Sanford in the visitor’s half of the fourth inning with the help of a two-run single by right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) to give the Mainers a 2-1 lead. In the home half of the fourth ‘Hawks center fielder Brett Callahan (St. Joseph’s University) tied the contest up at two runs apiece with an RBI base hit of his own.

A solo home run by Rojas Jr. in the top of the seventh inning, his second of the season, gave Sanford the eventual winning lead in Game 1.

Game 2: Upper Valley Nighthawks 7, Sanford Mainers 4

The Upper Valley Nighthawks (13-9) split their doubleheader with the Sanford Mainers (6-14) in Game 2 with a victory thanks to some early scoring at home in White River Junction on Monday. Nighthawks starting pitcher Jack Keenan (Marist College) threw 2-⅓ innings in his sixth appearance of the summer (5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K), and fellow starter John West (Boston College) took the loss and his second of 2021 for the Mainers (3 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 K). Cameron Bye (Wichita State University) recorded the save for Upper Valley by pitching the final four innings of the seven-inning matchup.

Both squads scored one run in the opening inning of action as well as the second; an RBI single by Sanford left fielder Derek Smith (Bryant University) and an error committed by the Mainers made it a 2-2 ballgame in the second early. Sanford scored twice more in the top of the third inning with the help of an RBI double by right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr. (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) and a wild pitch to take a 4-2 lead, but that would be the final instance in which the visiting team scored in this one.

Upper Valley stormed back in the home half of the third inning with a four-run campaign to take a 6-4 lead courtesy of a two-run single by third baseman Gehrig Anglin (Wright State University), an RBI base hit from first baseman William Sullivan (Troy University) and a sacrifice fly by shortstop Luca Trigiani (St. Joseph’s University). An RBI double by right fielder Alan Roden (Creighton University) in the bottom of the fourth inning capped off the scoring for both sides in Game 2 to bring his squad to victory at home.

Game 1: Ocean State Waves 7, Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 4

The visiting Ocean State Waves came away victorious from Game 1 of their doubleheader between the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks with the help of a pair of three-run innings at the Shark Tank on Monday evening. Waves starting pitcher Nicholas Payero (Seton Hall University) did not earn a decision in his impressive performance on the mound (4.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K), but fellow starter Chase Nowak (East Stroudsburg University) suffered his second loss of the summer for the Sharks (3 IP, 4 H, 4 R/ER, 3 BB, 3 K).

Waves catcher Nick Hassan (Kennesaw State University) crashed first in the top of the opening inning with an RBI single and again in the third inning with a three-run homer to extend his team’s lead to 4-0 early on. Three more runs came home for Ocean State in the visitor’s half of the fifth by way of two errors and a sacrifice fly from right fielder Slade Wilks (University of Southern Mississippi).

The Sharks came biting in the home half of the fifth inning with three runs to cut their deficit to 7-3 with the help of an error, a bases-loaded walk and then an RBI single by center fielder Tommy Seidl (University of Alabama). Left fielder Collin Shapiro (University of Massachusetts Amherst) drove home Martha’s Vineyard’s final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, but it would not be enough to overpower Hassan and his ripping Waves.

Game 2: Ocean State Waves 6, Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 1

The visiting Ocean State Waves (9-12-1) swept Monday night’s doubleheader against the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (11-8) in Oak Bluffs with a Game 2 victory. Both starting pitchers lasted four innings, Cody Whitten (Winthrop University) allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out four batters, and the Sharks’ Daniel Hegarty (University of Kansas) suffered his first loss of the summer (6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K).

A two-run second-inning single by Ocean State second baseman Alex Ramirez (University of Rhode Island) gave the Waves an early lead that was extended to 3-0 in the top of the third with an RBI by catcher Johnny Tuccillo (Stony Brook University). Martha’s Vineyard third baseman Grant Norris (Duke University) cracked a solo home run to score his team’s only run of the game to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

Two runs crossed home plate for Ocean State in the visitor’s half of the fourth inning as well as one more in the seventh and final inning to secure the Waves’ Monday sweep.

Valley Blue Sox 12, Mystic Schooners 7

The visiting Valley Blue Sox (13-8) snapped the Mystic Schooners’ (11-10) three-game win streak with a high-scoring victory at Fitch High School on Monday night. Blue Sox starting pitcher Ryan Miller (North Carolina Central University) picked up his first win of the season since joining Valley in late June with a fantastic seven-inning outing (7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 10 K), and fellow starter Anthony Mozzicato (Central Connecticut State University) was handed the loss for the Schooners (3 IP, 6 R/ER, 2 BB, 1 K).

A first-inning two-run double by Blue Sox catcher Cole Andrews (Miami University) gave the visitors an early lead, but Mystic stormed back in the bottom of the opening inning with three RBI from designated hitter Jimmy Sullivan (University of Virginia), third baseman Daniel Crossen (Northeastern University) and first baseman Joseph Carpenter (University of Delaware) to make it a quick 3-2 ballgame. A third-inning grand slam by Valley left fielder Brian Hart (Marist College) gave the Blue Sox a 6-3 advantage. A fourth-inning solo homer by Crossen then made it a 6-4 contest.

The longball was a common theme in this one as Valley first baseman Luke Franzoni (Xavier University) launched a two-run dinger to bring the score to 8-3 after seven innings. A two-run at-bat that featured a wild pitch and an error brought home two more runners for the Blue Sox in the eighth plus a solo home run by Andrews gave Valley an 11-4 edge, but a three-run homer by Crossen in the home half of the eighth cut his team’s deficit to 11-7. Hart’s second home run of the night tallied the Blue Sox’s 12th and final run in this home run derby of a Monday night game in the NECBL.

Both starting pitchers tossed five innings who each also possess the last name ‘Moore’.
