North Shore Navigators 12, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 2

The North Shore Navigators (10-8-2) achieved the 10-win mark and set off fireworks in a blowout win over the visiting Winnipesaukee Muskrats (7-13) at Fraser Field on Sunday’s Fourth of July. Pitcher of the week Jackson Emus (Princeton University) earned the win for North Shore and his third straight in as many appearances (5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R/ER, 3 BB, 4 K), while fellow starter Ryan Fischer (New Jersey Institute of Technology) suffered the loss for Winnipesaukee (2.0 IP, 6 H, 7 R/ER, 3 BB, 2 K).

A five-run bottom of the first inning gave the Navigators an early advantage over the visitors with the help of a sacrifice fly, a bases-loaded walk and a bases-clearing double by left fielder David Kale (Fordham University). The Muskrats got one run back in the top of the second to make it a 5-1 ballgame via an RBI single by left fielder Matthew Overton (Molloy College). North Shore tallied two more runs in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-run single from designated hitter Ryan Marra (Brown University) to bring the score to 7-1 early on.

Winnipesaukee first baseman Mike La Rocca (Southern New Hampshire University) drove in his team’s second and final run of the night in the visitor’s half of the sixth inning by way of a bases-loaded walk. Another five-run inning in the bottom of the seventh for the Navs completed their firecracker-esque scoring for the evening courtesy of an RBI single by Marra, another from first baseman Logan Bravo (Harvard University), another by catcher Cal Christofori (Yale University) and two more runs from pinch hitter Hunter Baldwin (Harvard University).

Valley Blue Sox 9, Bristol Blues 8

The visiting Valley Blue Sox (12-8) snapped their three-game losing skid with a tight victory over the Bristol Blues (4-17-1) at Muzzy Field on Sunday night. Both starting pitchers tossed four innings, John MacCauley (Butler University) allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out one batter for the Blue Sox and Mark Faello (Hofstra University) allowed four hits and as many runs but just one earned run while walking five and punching out four for the Blues.

A second-inning solo home run by Valley first baseman Luke Franzoni (Xavier University) got his squad on the board first, a lead that was extended to 3-0 in the top of the third inning thanks to an error and an RBI double by left fielder Brian Hart (Marist College). Infielder Travis Holt (High Point University) tallied one more run for the Blue Sox in the fourth to make it a 4-0 contest. Bristol had seen enough by the bottom of the sixth inning and put up a six-spot with the help of an RBI single by center fielder Austin White (Coastal Carolina University) and a pair of two-run base hits from first baseman Chad Knight (Duke University) and designated hitter Brennen Dorighi (Wofford College) plus a run from left fielder Anthony Galason (Elon University) to take a 6-4 lead.

Valley made it a one-run ballgame in the top of the seventh inning courtesy of an error, but the Blues extended their lead to 8-5 thanks to a two-run double by Knight. The Blue Sox made it a one-run game again in the visitor’s half of the eighth with a pair of RBI from infielder Jack Housinger (Xavier University) and Holt. A pair of bases-loaded walks drawn by Housinger and Holt in the ninth gave them their eventual winning 9-8 lead.
