Game 1: Winnipesaukee Muskrats 8, North Adams SteepleCats 5

The Winnipesaukee Muskrats topped the visiting North Adams SteepleCats in the first game of the teams’ seven-inning doubleheader on Saturday in Laconia. Muskrats starting pitcher Nate Espelin (University of Dayton) threw five innings of solid work for the visiting team (5 hits, 4 earned runs, 3 walks, 5 strikeouts), and fellow starter Jordan Yoder (Lafayette College) tossed six for the SteepleCats (7 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 6 K). Preston Yerrington (Southern New Hampshire University) secured his first save of the season for Winnipesaukee.

A first-inning two-run home run by ‘Skrats right fielder Jake LaPrairie (Tulane University) and an error committed by Winnipesaukee in the same inning made it 2-1 in favor of the visitors early. A three-run home run by Muskrats first baseman Ramon Jiminez (Boston College) made it a 5-1 contest and a four-run inning by North Adams that saw an RBI single by right fielder Charles Middleton (University of the Pacific) and a three-run homer from first baseman Brandyn Hylton (Stetson University) tied the game up at five and scored the ‘Cats’ final runs of the ballgame.

An error, a pass ball and an RBI by Jiminez gave Winnipesaukee their eventual winning 8-5 lead in the seventh inning.

Game 2: Winnipesaukee Muskrats 4, North Adams SteepleCats 0

The Winnipesaukee Muskrats (13-25) swept and shut out the visiting North Adams SteepleCats (21-17-2) in Game 2 of their doubleheader on Saturday night at the Robbie Mills Sports Complex. Muskrats starting pitcher Geoff Mosseau (St. John’s University) won his third contest of the summer with a four-inning, no-hit, scoreless performance at home, and fellow starter Vincenzo Zappulla (Merrimack College) threw a six-inning complete game for the SteepleCats despite bearing the loss (6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K).

Winnipesaukee scored three of their four runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a two-run longball by center fielder Cole Johnson (Kansas State University) and an error committed by North Adams and Johnson’s second homer of the night, a solo shot, in the home half of the third capped off the scoring in this affair to essentially seal his squad’s Game 2 victory.

Game 1: Valley Blue Sox 6, Newport Gulls 3

The Valley Blue Sox defeated the visiting Newport Gulls and snapped their five-game winning streak in Game 1 of the teams’ doubleheader at MacKenzie Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Valley jumped out to an early 3-0 lead through one inning with the help of a two-run double by catcher Cole Andrews (Miami University) and another RBI double by outfielder Brian Hart (Marist College). The Blue Sox then extended their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the second inning thanks to an RBI base hit by infielder Travis Holt (High Point University), a wild pitch and a solo home run by infielder Luke Franzoni (Xavier University) to cap off the home team’s scoring for the remainder of the ballgame.

The Gulls cut their deficit in half in the visitor’s half of the fifth inning courtesy of an RBI single by outfielder Sam Cochrane (College of Charleston), a sacrifice fly by Chase Achuff (Rollins College) and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Matthew Wood (Pennsylvania State University), but it would not be enough to overpower Valley on their home turf.

Game 2: Valley Blue Sox 6, Newport Gulls 3

The same score and result as Game 1 occurred in the second game of the Valley Blue Sox (23-17) and the visiting Newport Gulls (21-20) at MacKenzie Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Blue Sox scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning with the help of a two-run error committed by the Gulls, a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single by Cole Andrews (Miami University). Both teams then scored two runs apiece in the third inning, Valley tallyied two runs thanks to a wild pitch and a single by Matthew Wood (Pennsylvania State University) and a two-run home run for Newport via a two-run Paul Franzoni (New Jersey Institute of Technology) homer. A seventh-inning solo longball by Chase Achuff (Rollins College) for the Blue Sox brought on the second 6-3 final score of the day in Holyoke.

Game 1: Mystic Schooners 4, Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 2

In Game 1 of the teams’ Saturday doubleheader, the Mystic Schooners edged the visiting Martha’s Vineyard Sharks by two runs at Fitch High School. Schooners starting pitcher Trystan Levesque (University of Rhode Island) lasted just two innings but had a solid outing in his team’s win (2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K), and fellow starter Noah Johnson (Virginia Tech University) tossed four innings of work for the Sharks (4 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K). Jared Burrows (University of Hartford) recorded his second save of 2021 for Mystic.

The Schooners scored one run in the bottom of the first inning but Martha’s Vineyard tied things up in the visitor’s half of the second with a sacrifice fly by center fielder Tommy Seidl (Colorado Mesa University). The Sharks and Schooners scored again in the third with right fielder Anthony Shaver (Florida State University) hitting a home run for the Sharks as their final run of the game and Mystic scoring via an error. A two-run triple by Schooners third baseman Daniel Crossen (Northeastern University) gave the home team an eventual winning 4-2 advantage in the home half of the fifth inning.

Game 2: Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 6, Mystic Schooners 6

The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader between the visiting Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (24-16-1) and the Mystic Schooners (22-17-1) ended in a 6-6 tie after nine innings at Fitch High School, the NECBL’s third of the summer.

A two-run home run by Mystic first baseman Christopher Brito (Rutgers University) gave the home team an early lead through one inning of action before the Schooners extended their lead to 4-0 in the home half of the fifth with the help of a Brito sacrifice fly and an RBI single by catcher Michael DeMartino (Southern Connecticut State University). A grand slam by Sharks right fielder Will Duff (Vanderbilt University) in the visitor’s half of the sixth inning tied things up until Mystic quickly reclaimed a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the same inning via an error.

Martha’s Vineyard left fielder Matt Woods (Bryant University) homered in the top of the seventh inning to tie things up and eventually force extra innings, but no scoring was done in the eighth and ninth innings, resulting in the league’s third tie of the 2021 season.

Bristol Blues 13, Ocean State Waves 3

The visiting Bristol Blues (12-28) blew out the Ocean State Waves (18-24) in what was supposed to be Game 2 of the teams’ doubleheader from Friday on Saturday night at Old Mountain Field. Blues starting pitcher Hector Alejandro (University of Connecticut) tossed three innings of work (2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K), and fellow starter Domenic Picone (University of Rhode Island) suffered his second loss of the season for the Waves (3 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 4 K).

A first-inning error committed by Ocean State drove home two runs for Bristol and a pass ball scored the Waves’ first run of the night in the bottom of the second. Three home runs hit by Blues first baseman Tyson Cooper (Pennsylvania State University), right fielder Mark Coley (University of Rhode Island) and infielder Chad Knight (Duke University) in the visitor’s all of the third inning made it a 7-1 ballgame early on.

Ocean State scored once more in the home half of the fourth inning with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly by Bristol catcher Tyler Keith (Post University) in the top of the fifth brought the score to 8-2. Two more runs scored for the visiting team in the sixth inning thanks to an RBI double by infielder Brennen Dorighi (Wofford College) and a pass ball before the Blues scored thrice more in the top of the seventh with the help of a two-run homer by Keith and an RBI base hit by Coley. The Waves tallied one more run in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a pass ball to bring the final score to 13-3.

Keene Swamp Bats 8, Upper Valley Nighthawks 4

The Keene Swamp Bats (25-15) took down the visiting Upper Valley Nighthawks (22-17) at Alumni Field on Saturday night. Swamp Bats starting pitcher Jake Berry (University of Virginia) pitched nearly four innings (3 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 8 K), but it was reliever Michael Bacica (University of Maine Orono) who picked up the win after throwing 4.1 innings of one-run ball (2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K). Upper Valley’s starting pitcher Alex Theis (Wright State University) was handed the loss for the Nighthawks (4.0 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 6 K).

The Swamp Bats came out swinging in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five runs in the frame. A two-run single by catcher Axel Melendez (Florida Southwestern State) began the big inning, and timely RBI hits from shortstop Zach Bushling (University of Connecticut) and left fielder Thomas Joseph (Jacksonville University) extended the lead for the Swamp Bats. Upper Valley responded with three runs of their own in the top of the third with one swing of the bat. Third baseman Gehrig Anglin (Wright State University) launched a three-run home run to cut the Keene lead to 5-3. Another home run from Anglin in the top of the fifth inning cut the Swamp Bats lead to 5-4.

The Swamp Bats got their insurance runs late in the game with three RBIs by Bushling, one from a fielder’s choice and another from a two-run homer, bringing the final score to 8-4.

North Shore Navigators 7, Vermont Mountaineers 6

The visiting North Shore Navigators (19-18-2) edged out the Vermont Mountaineers (21-20) at Montpelier Recreation Field on Saturday night. Navs starter Christopher Shine (Seton Hall University) picked up the win after five strong innings of work (5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K), and Mountaineers reliever Ryan Steckline (University of Cincinnati) was handed the loss after coughing up three runs in less than one inning (0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 1 K).

Vermont started off strong, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning. RBI doubles by Evan Giordano (SUNY Stony Brook) and Curtis Robison (Penn State University), as well as an RBI single by Griffin Arnone (Elon University), got the scoring going. The Navs responded with their first run of the game in the top of the third and added one more to cut the Mountaineers’ lead to 3-2 after four innings.

North Shore took a 7-3 lead after exploding for five runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by David Kale (Fordham University), as well as a bases-loaded walk by Alex Lemery (Marymount University). The Mountaineers refused to go down without a good fight, however. A two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth by Adam Retzbach (Lehigh University) cut the North Shore lead to 7-5, and an RBI by Kade Kretzschmar (Dartmouth College) got the Mountaineers within one run of the lead. North Shore reliever James Sashin (University of San Diego) was able to pitch around trouble and stop the Vermont comeback (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K).
