Game 1: Danbury Westerners 7, Mystic Schooners 4

The visiting Danbury Westerners defeated the Mystic Schooners in Game 1 of the teams’ doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Fitch High School. Westerners starting pitcher Sean Hogan (Williams College) threw four innings of work for his winning team (7 hits, 3 earned runs, 0 walks, 5 strikeouts), and fellow starter Will Glock (University of Maryland) lasted just over one inning for the Schooners at home (1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K). Coleman Picard (University of Hartford) secured his third save of the summer for Danbury.

The Westerners jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after just one inning with the help of three RBI doubles by left fielder Cameron Masterman (University of Louisville), first baseman Andrew Jenkins (Georgia Tech) and designated hitter William Gersky (University of Richmond) before Mystic tallied two runs in the second via a solo homer run by catcher Addison Kopack (University of Rhode Island) and an RBI single.

Both teams scored once in the third inning of action to bring the score to 4-3 and again in the fourth with the help of an RBI triple by Schooners designated hitter Corey DiLoreto (Northeastern University) and a sacrifice fly from Masterman. Lastly, the Westies added two insurance runs in the sixth inning thanks to a wild pitch and an RBI single by Masterman to bring their team’s eventual winning score to 7-4.

Game 2: Mystic Schooners 14, Danbury Westerners 0

The Mystic Schooners (21-17) shut out and routed the visiting Danbury Westerners (21-19) in a blowout win on Friday night at Fitch High School. Schooners starting pitcher Anthony Mozzicato (Central Connecticut State University) picked up his first victory of the summer with a wonderful outing (5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), and fellow starter Jimmy Fahey (Trinity College) suffered his third loss of the season and his second-straight (2.2 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 K).

First baseman Addison Kopack (University of Rhode Island) hit his second homer of the day in Game 2 of the doubleheader and catcher Sam Loda (Central Connecticut State University) singled to give Mystic a 2-0 lead through two out of seven innings of action. The Schooners went on to score four more runs in the home half of the third that saw two RBI singles and a two-run home run by right fielder Barry Walsh (Boston College), his fifth longball of 2021.

Five more runners crossed home plate for Mystic in the fourth inning with the help of a two-run double, a bases-loaded walk and then a sacrifice fly by Walsh to make it an 11-0 ballgame. The Schooners scored three more times to cap off their scoring in the fifth via a wild pitch, an RBI single by left fielder Tucker Flint (University of Maryland) and an RBI from designated hitter Corey DiLoreto (Northeastern University).

Keene Swamp Bats 5, North Adams SteepleCats 2

The visiting Keene Swamp Bats (24-15) edged the North Adams SteepleCats (21-15-2) to hand them their first loss after a five-game winning streak at Joe Wolfe Field on Friday night. Swamp Bats starting pitcher Cole Stallings (Stetson University) earned his third win of 2021 with a stellar performance on the mound (5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K), and fellow starter Samuel Bennett (University of Pennsylvania) took on his first loss of the season for the SteepleCats (3 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 4 K). Grant Besser (Florida Southwestern State) recorded his second save of the summer for Keene.

An RBI double by Swamp Bats center fielder Troy Schreffler (University of Maryland) and a two-run home run by first baseman Noah Martinez (Central Connecticut State University) in the top of the third inning gave the visiting team an early advantage. Right fielder Michael Nyisztor (Rutgers University) singled to extend his squad’s lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning and Schreffler drove home his team’s fifth and final run of the evening in the top of the seventh by way of a single.

North Adams finally got themselves on the board in the home half of the eighth inning thanks to an error and a sacrifice fly by right fielder Charles Middleton (University of the Pacific), but it would not be enough to overpower Keene, only enough to avoid the shutout at home.

Sanford Mainers 9, Vermont Mountaineers 4

The Sanford Mainers (15-24) won their Friday night contest on the road over the visiting Vermont Mountaineers (21-19) at Goodall Park with the help of some early scoring. Mainers starting pitcher Blake Bennett (University of Massachusetts Amherst) lasted just over three innings for his winning team (3.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 4 K), and fellow starter Luke Rettig (Lehigh University) suffered his third loss of 2021 for the Mountaineers (3.2 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 5 BB, 3 K).

Sanford jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with the help of RBI from right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr. (Texas Rio Grande Valley) and designated hitter Shane Paradine (Stony Brook University) before Vermont quickly took a 3-2 lead in the visitor’s half of the second thanks to a bases-clearing double by center fielder Griffin Arnone (Elon University). The Mainers wasted little time reclaiming a 6-3 lead in the home half of the third inning via three RBI singles and a sacrifice putout by shortstop Jonathan Barditch (Manhattan College) in the third inning.

A solo homer by Mountaineers third baseman Evan Giordano (SUNY Stony Brook) and an error committed by Vermont in the fourth inning brought the score to 7-4 before Sanford scored two more times in the home half of the fifth inning courtesy of an RBI by center fielder Cam Ridley (Eastern Kentucky University) and an RBI base hit by second baseman Dominic Freeberger (University of North Carolina Asheville) to finish off the scoring in their team’s victory on Friday night.

Upper Valley Nighthawks 4, North Shore Navigators 2

The visiting Upper Valley Nighthawks (2-16) defeated the North Shore Navigators (18-18-2) in extra innings on Friday night at Fraser Field. Nighthawks starting pitcher Jace Kaminska (Wichita State University) threw just two innings of work for his victorious squad (2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K), and fellow starter Jackson Emus (Princeton University) tossed five innings of solid work for the Navigators (5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 6 BB, 4 K).

Both teams scored one run apiece in the second inning, Upper Valley first baseman William Sullivan (Troy University) doubling to score his team’s first run of the evening and North Shore right fielder Dylan Brazil (Stetson University) singling to do the same for the home team. ‘Hawks second baseman Max Viera (Northeastern University) similarly singled to bring home his team’s second run on the day and a wild pitch thrown by Upper Valley in the bottom of the sixth scored the Navs’ second and final run of the affair.

The ballgame remained tied at two through nine full, so thus extra innings were forced. The 10th inning saw no scoring but the visitor’s half of the 11th experienced an RBI single by Sullivan and an error committed by North Shore to eventually lead the visiting team to their 22nd victory of the summer.

Newport Gulls 6, Ocean State Waves 2

The Newport Gulls (21-17) topped the visiting Ocean State Waves (17-23) to win their fifth consecutive game on Friday evening at Cardines Field. Gulls starting pitcher Kellan Tulio (University of Louisville) threw four solid innings of work for his victorious team (4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K), and fellow starter Nathan Stahl (Indiana University) was handed his first loss of the summer for the Waves (3.1 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K).

Ocean State scored their only two runs of the night in the top of the fourth inning by way of a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by center fielder Albert Choi (New Jersey Institute of Technology), but Newport quickly answered in the home half of the same inning by scoring three times thanks to a two-run home run by first baseman Bryce Hulett (University of Pittsburgh) and a bases-loaded walk.

The Gulls went on to extend their lead to 5-2 in the home half of the fifth inning thanks to a two-run single by center fielder Kenny Oyama (Loyola Marymount University) and an error scored Newport’s sixth and final run of the night to help the home team clinch their fifth straight win.

Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 8, Valley Blue Sox 1

The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (24-15) defeated the visiting Valley Blue Sox (20-17) in a blowout victory on Friday night at the Shark Tank. Sharks starting pitcher Jackson Nezuh (Florida State University) won his second outing of the summer with the help of an outstanding performance (5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K), and fellow starter Ethan Teixeira (American International College) bore his first loss of the season for the Blue Sox (3 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 0 K).

Martha’s Vineyard scored thrice in the bottom of the second inning with the help of a solo home run by first baseman Michael Brown (University of Washington) and RBI from third baseman Grant Norris (Duke University) and left fielder Matt Woods (Bryant University) plus a solo homer by designated hitter Haydn McGeary (Colorado Mesa University) made it a 4-0 ballgame through just three innings. Norris drove home the Sharks’ fifth run in the home half of the fifth inning courtesy of a triple before Valley right fielder Luke Franzoni (Xavier University) hit a solo longball to get his team on the scoreboard in the visitor’s half of the seventh.

A two-run double by Vineyard right fielder Anthony Shaver (Florida State University) in the bottom of the seventh inning and an RBI single from center fielder Tommy Seidl (University of Alabama) capped off the scoring in this contest on the island.
