Game 1: Mystic Schooners vs. Danbury Westerners

Game 1 of the scheduled doubleheader between the visiting Mystic Schooners and the Danbury Westerners was postponed due to inclement weather.

The ballgame will be made up on Thursday, July 15, at 6:30pm.

Game 2: Mystic Schooners 7, Danbury Westerners 1

The original Game 2 of the doubleheader between the visiting Mystic Schooners (11-9) and the Danbury Westerners (10-8) was played as a nine-inning contest at Waterbury Stadium in Waterbury, Connecticut, on Saturday evening. Rogers Park in Danbury currently has unplayable field conditions, thus the move to Waterbury for the time being. Schooners starting pitcher Tyler Schoff (Bryant University) earned his first win of the season (5.0 innings pitched, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts), and Jimmy Fahey (Trinity College) suffered the loss for the Westerners (3.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 earned runs, 3 BB, 2 K).

Mystic shortstop Stanton Leuthner (Stony Brook University) drove in the first run of the ballgame in the second inning with an RBI single to take an early lead. A three-run top of the third inning followed in which designated hitter Charlie Pagliarini (Fairfield University) hit an RBI double, second baseman Addison Kopack (University of Rhode Island) hit a sacrifice fly and Leuthner brought home another runner via a base hit to make it 4-0.

The Schooners tallied two more runs in the sixth inning by way of an RBI from first baseman Christopher Brito (Rutgers University) and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Kopack to extend his team’s lead to 6-0. Brito brought another runner home with the help of an RBI single in the visitor’s half of the eighth to finish up Mystic’s scoring and Danbury scored their single run of the evening in the home half of the inning via a double from right fielder Jake Roper (Palm Beach Atlantic College).

Vermont Mountaineers 11, Keene Swamp Bats 8

The visiting Vermont Mountaineers (11-10) snapped the Keene Swamp Bats’ (12-6) 10-game winning streak with an extra-inning victory on Saturday night at Alumni Field. Mountaineers starting pitcher Josh Becker (University of Massachusetts Lowell) tossed four innings for his winning team (6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K), while fellow starter Zach Davidson (Lincoln Trail College) threw three solid innings of work for the Swamp Bats (2 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 6 K).

Vermont struck first in the top of the second inning via an RBI single by left fielder Jack Frank (Michigan State University), but a pair of solo home runs by Keene right fielder Troy Schreffler (University of Maryland) and catcher Jared Payne (Polk State College) gave the home team an early 2-1 advantage. Left fielder Ethan Groff (Tulane University) drove in another run for Keene in the home half of the third thanks to an error. The Swamp Bats kept their 3-1 lead until the visitor’s half of the sixth when the ‘Neers exploded for four runs to take a 5-3 lead with the help of a three-run homer by designated hitter Jeffrey Holtz (Xavier University), his first longball of the summer, as well as another error.

A seventh-inning two-run dinger by Keene third baseman Daniel DiGeorgio (Rutgers University) helped his squad tie it up at five runs apiece. The Mountaineers would take the lead again in the bottom of the inning by another pair of solo homers by Vermont infielder Matt Oldham (Elon University) and Holtz’s second dinger of the night to make it a 7-5 ballgame. Swamp Bats second baseman Zach Bushling (University of Connecticut) launched a two-run homer of his own in the eighth to tie things up at seven to force extra innings. The ‘Neers wasted no time bringing home four runs in the top of the 10th to secure the win on the road.
