Mystic Schooners 8, Ocean State Waves 5

The Mystic Schooners (20-16) defeated the visiting Ocean State Waves (16-22) in a comeback win of sorts at Fitch High School on Wednesday evening. Schooners starting pitcher Jack DiLauro (College of the Holy Cross) threw five innings of one-run work in his team’s win (5 hits, 0 walks, 6 strikeouts), and fellow starter Chris Chaney (University of Maryland) similarly tossed five innings in his third start of the season for the Waves (6 H, 4 earned runs, 3 BB, 5 K).

A two-run home run off of the bat of Mystic catcher Michael DeMartino (Southern Connecticut State University), his sixth home run through just one month with the team, gave his squad an early lead that would be tied in the visitor’s half of the second inning via an RBI double by Ocean State right fielder Ian Ostberg (Quinnipiac University). The home team reclaimed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI single by third baseman Daniel Crossen (Northeastern University) that would be extended to 4-1 in the fifth by way of an RBI base hit from center fielder Tucker Flint (University of Maryland).

In a wild eighth inning, the Waves tied the game once again in the visitor’s half of the inning via a three-run home run launched by catcher Nicholas Cimillo (Rutgers University), but the Schooners scored four runs of their own in the home half of the eighth to take an 8-4 lead with the help of an RBI single from Crossen and a three-run homer by shortstop Stanton Leuthner (Stony Brook University). Ocean State third baseman Luis Atiles (Lenoir-Rhyne University) jacked a solo home run of his own in the top of the ninth, but it would not be enough to overpower Mystic in this ballgame.

Vermont Mountaineers 8, Sanford Mainers 6

The Vermont Mountaineers (21-18) defeated the visiting Sanford Mainers (14-24) with the help of a six-run inning and comeback victory in Montpelier on Wednesday night. Mountaineers starting pitcher Josh O’Neill (Stony Brook University) threw nearly six innings for his victorious team, (5.2 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 K), and fellow starter Jacob Edwards (University of North Carolina Asheville) tossed four scoreless innings for the Mainers (2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K). Cole Roland (Dartmouth College) recorded his fourth save of 2021 for Vermont.

A two-run home run by Sanford catcher Ryan Turenne (University of Maine Orono) gave his visiting squad an early lead in the top of the fourth inning and a four-run sixth inning finished the Mainers’ scoring in this one, a campaign featuring two runs crossing home plate via an error, a balk and an RBI single by left fielder Evan Sleight (Rutgers University).

Vermont tallied their first run of the night in the home half of the same inning via a bases-loaded walk and went on to grab a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the seventh, an inning that saw a three-run homer by catcher Matt Oldham (North Carolina State University) and a two-run single by right fielder Casey Mayes (Michigan State University). The ‘Neers recorded one more run in the eighth inning via a single by left fielder Kade Kretzschmar (Dartmouth College) to essentially seal his team’s win.

North Adams SteepleCats 4, Keene Swamp Bats 2

The red-hot North Adams SteeppleCats (21-14-2) edged the visiting Keene Swamp Bats (23-15) with a close win, their fifth straight, at Joe Wolfe Field on Wednesday night. In relief of SteepleCats starting pitcher Camden Lovrich (Jacksonville State University), reliever Jake Cubbler (University of South Carolina) picked up his first win of the summer courtesy of a scoreless outing (5 IP, 2 H, P0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K), and Swamp Bats starter Zachary Davidson (Lincoln Trail College) was handed his fifth loss of the season (5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K).

North Adams jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a two-run single by left fielder Charles Middleton (University of the Pacific), that is before Keene tied the ballgame in the visitor’s half of the fourth inning with the help of a balk committed by Lovrich and a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Drake Westcott (University of Louisville). The ‘Cats reclaimed their lead in the fifth via back-to-back RBI singles by center fielder JuJuan Lacewell-Cason (Shippensburg University) and shortstop Jon Kozarian (Slippery Rock University) to seal their team’s victory at home.

North Shore Navigators 11, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 0

The North Shore Navigators (18-17-2) shut out the visiting Winnipesaukee Muskrats (11-25) with a blowout victory, handing them their eighth consecutive loss on Wednesday night at Fraser Field. Navigators starting pitcher Luke Marshall (Stonehill College) earned his third win of the season with a lights-out performance at home (6 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 11 K), and fellow starter Joseph Quintal (Fordham University) bore his first loss of 2021 for the Muskrats (3.2 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 6 K).

North Shore tallied two runs in the bottom of the second inning and four more in the third, the latter campaign seeing a two-run single by outfielder David Kale (Fordham University), an RBI base hit from third baseman Matthias Haas (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) and a bases-loaded walk. Another four-run home half of the fourth inning was propelled by an error, two singles from Haas and catcher Cal Christofori (Yale University) as well as an RBI double by first baseman Logan Bravo (Stanford University). Haas drove home another run with another single in the eighth inning to cap off the scoring in his team’s rout over Winnipesaukee.

Newport Gulls 11, Bristol Blues 3

The Newport Gulls (20-17) blew out the visiting Bristol Blues (11-26) to simultaneously extend their winning streak to four wins and hand the Blues their fifth consecutive loss at Cardines Field on Wednesday night. Gulls starting pitcher Grayson Moore (Vanderbilt University) was handed his second win of 201 with a great outing (5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), and fellow starter Garrett Coe (University of Connecticut) bore his second loss in as many starts for Bristol (4 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 3 K).

A top-of-the-first-inning error committed by Newport scored the Blues’ first run of the night, but the Gulls promptly tied things up in the home half of the inning. A solo home run by Newport right fielder Sam Cochrane (College of Charleston) and a wild pitch gave the home team a 3-1 lead through two innings and an error in the fourth inning plus an RBI single by shortstop Chase Achuff (Rollins College) extended it to 5-1. Another two-run inning by the Gulls brought the score to 7-1 through five innings of action, and in the visitor’s half of the sixth, Bristol left fielder Anthony Galason (Elon University) singled to drive home his team’s second run of the night.

Another error committed by the Blues in the home half of the seventh inning scored Newport’s eighth run of the affair before Bristol tallied their final run of the matchup in the top of the second-to-last inning of action thanks to an RBI double by center fielder Austin White (Coastal Carolina University). The Gulls scored thrice in the bottom of the same inning with the help of two wild pitches and an RBI base hit by Cochrane to cap off the scoring in this contest.

Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 7, Danbury Westerners 1

The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (23-15) defeated the visiting Danbury Westerners (20-18) and held them to just one run at the Shark Tank on Wednesday night. Sharks starting pitcher Ryan Ramsey (University of Maryland) earned his second win of the summer with an outstanding performance (6 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 10 K), and fellow starter Kyle Roche (Franklin and Marshall College) did not suffer the loss with just three innings of work for the Westerners (3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K).

Martha’s Vineyard tallied their first run of the night in the bottom of the second inning via a bases-loaded walk and Danbury second baseman John Anderson (Georgia Tech) temporarily tied the ballgame up in the visitor’s half of the third with a solo homer, his ninth longball of the summer. Sharks second baseman Jadyn Jackson (Georgia Tech) reclaimed the lead for his squad in the home half of the fourth inning thanks to a single and a four-run sixth that saw a two-run single from left fielder Collin Shapiro (University of Massachusetts Amherst), an RBI base hit by first baseman Hadyn McGeary (Colorado Mesa University) and an RBI double by designated hitter Ryan Hernandez (University of Houston) to secure the advantage. Vineyard center fielder Tommy Seidl (University of Alabama) hit an eighth-inning sacrifice lead to ensure his team’s win at home.
