Keene Swamp Bats 8, North Shore Navigators 3

The Keene Swamp Bats (23-14) snapped their two-game losing skid with a victory over the visiting North Shore Navigators (17-17-2) on Monday night at Alumni Field. Swamp Bats starting pitcher Gage Bradley (Vanderbilt University) threw three innings of work in his team’s win (1 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 5 K), and fellow starter Austin Amaral (Stetson University) was handed his third loss of 2021 for the Navigator (5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 8 K).

A balk committed by Amaral in the bottom of the first inning brought home Keene’s first run of the night and a double by right fielder Michael Nyisztor (Rutgers University) drove his team’s second of the night home in the third. A wild pitch thrown by the Swamp Bats in the visitor’s half of the fourth gave North Shore their first tally of the evening to make it a 2-1 contest early, before a solo home run by Keene shortstop Zach Bushling (University of Connecticut) in the home half of the fifth inning made it 3-1.

A three-run sixth inning for the Swamp Bats started to blow the game open, a campaign that saw a two-run double by Bushling and an RBI single from left fielder Thomas Joseph (Jacksonville University). A seventh-inning solo shot by Navs first baseman Logan Bravo (Harvard University) tallied his team’s second run of the night before the Swamp Bats recorded two more runs in the bottom of the same inning via a sacrifice fly from second baseman Omar Daniels (University of Dayton) and an RBI triple by Bushling, and, with the help of a single earlier in the game, completed the cycle for Bushling. An RBI double by North Shore second baseman Jacob Gustin (Bryant University) in the ninth inning capped off the scoring in this Northern Division matchup.

North Adams SteepleCats 7, Sanford Mainers 2

The North Adams SteepleCats (19-14-2) defeated the visiting Sanford Mainers (14-23) and won their third straight ballgame with the help of a four-run inning on Monday evening at Joe Wolfe Field. SteepleCats starting pitcher Kaleb Sophy (Shippensburg University) earned his third win of the summer (6 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K), and fellow starter Luke Stephens (St. Joseph’s College) made his first start since recently signing with the Mainers, but suffered the loss on the road (4.2 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 K). Jared Henry (University of Massachusetts Amherst) secured his first save of the season for North Adams.

SteepleCats third baseman John Marti (University of Albany) doubled in the bottom of the fourth inning to drive home his team’s first run of the night before his squad tallied a four-run fifth that saw an RBI double by shortstop Jon Kozarian (Slippery Rock University), an RBI base hit from first baseman Brandon Hylton (Stetson University) and a two-run home run by right fielder Charles Middleton (University of the Pacific). Sanford got themselves on the board in the visitor’s half of the sixth inning by way of an RBI single from designated hitter Derek Smith (Bryant University) before the ‘Cats got that run back in the home half of the inning via a fielder’s choice.

Mainers second baseman Dominic Freeberger (University of North Carolina Asheville) drove home his team’s final run of the evening with a seventh-inning single before Kozarian hit a sacrifice fly for North Adams in the bottom of the eighth to cap off the scoring in this contest.

Ocean State Waves 9, Valley Blue Sox 5

The Ocean State Waves (16-20) won their fourth consecutive matchup, this time over the visiting Valley Blue Sox (20-16), and handed them their third straight loss on Monday night at Old Mountain Field. Waves starting pitcher Liam Dvorak (College of the Holy Cross) tossed three innings in his team’s win (2 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K), and fellow starter Robert Hensey (Monmouth University) bore his second loss of 2021 for the Blue Sox (4.2 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 3 K).

A pair of Valley sacrifice flies in the top of the second inning by right fielder Paul Franzoni (New Jersey Institute of Technology) and shortstop Mason LaPlante (Yale University) gave the visitors a temporary lead that was stripped from them in the home half of the same inning that saw a two-run double by Waves shortstop Alex Ramirez (University of Rhode Island) and a two-run single from left fielder Travis Honeyman (Boston College) to make it a 4-2 score early on. The Blue Sox tallied their third run via a solo homer by third baseman Travis Holt (High Point University) in the fifth inning before Ocean State’s Nicholas Cimillo (Rutgers University) launched a two-run longball in the bottom of the inning to make it a 6-3 contest.

A solo homer by Valley catcher Cole Andrews (Miami University) in the visitor’s half of the sixth inning brought the Blue Sox within two runs and a seventh-inning RBI single from left fielder Brian Hart (Marist College) brought them within just one before the Waves crashed once again in the bottom of the same inning thanks to a dropped third strike and a two-run double off of the bat of center fielder Albert Choi (New Jersey Institute of Technology) to finish off the scoring in this affair.

Vermont Mountaineers 8, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 3

The Vermont Mountaineers (20-17) won their fifth straight ballgame and simultaneously handed the visiting Winnipesaukee Muskrats (11-24) their seventh straight loss with a win in Montpelier on Monday night. Mountaineers starting pitcher Alex Bryant (College of the Holy Cross) earned his first victory of the summer with a wonderful scoreless outing (6 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 7 K), and fellow starter Anthony Hattrup (University of Dayton) was handed his third loss of the season for the Muskrats (3 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 1 K).

A three-run bottom of the first inning by Vermont that saw an RBI single from right fielder Kade Kretzschmar (Dartmouth College) and a two-run double from first baseman Adam Retzbach (Lehigh University) gave the home team an early advantage that would be extended to 6-0 in the home half of the third with the help of RBI from designated hitter Curtis Robison (Pennsylvania State University), center fielder Tommy Courtney (University of Pennsylvania) and second baseman Craig Larsen (University of Pennsylvania). A fifth-inning RBI single from Robison gave his squad a 7-0 lead before a wild pitch helped give Winnipesaukee their first two runs of the night in the visitor’s half of the seventh.

Courtney singled in the bottom of the seventh to score his squad’s final run of the evening and an RBI double by ‘Skrats right fielder Matthew Overton (Molloy College) capped off the scoring in this contest in Vermont.

Newport Gulls 3, Mystic Schooners 0

The Newport Gulls (19-17) shut out the visiting Mystic Schooners (18-16) to win their third consecutive ballgame on Monday night at Cardines Field. Gulls starting pitcher Nelson Berkwich (Vanderbilt University) enjoyed his first victory of the summer with a phenomenal scoreless appearance (6 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K), and fellow starter Sam Favieri (University of Connecticut) bore his first loss of the season for the Schooners (4 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 6 BB, 1 K). Daniel Colwell (University of California Los Angeles) recorded his first save of 2021 for Newport.

An error committed by Mystic in the bottom of the first inning tallied the Gulls’ first run of the night, followed by a fielder’s choice by left fielder Conor Kiely (Stonehill College) to drive home first baseman Cal Parillo (Rhode Island College) in the home half of the fifth. Designated hitter Matt Wood (Pennsylvania State University) cracked a solo homer in the eighth inning to give Newport an insurance run and ultimately help lead his squad to victory as the Gulls sealed the shutout over the Schooners on Monday night.
