Game 1: Vermont Mountaineers 10, Keene Swamp Bats 1

The first game of a doubleheader between the Keene Swamp Bats and the Vermont Mountaineers was a continuation of their suspended July 20th contest. It resumed in the top of the third inning with the Swamp Bats acting as the visiting team and the Mountaineers leading 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Mountaineers topped the Swamp Bats by putting up a 10-spot in which Vermont’s relief pitcher Brendan O’Donnell (University of Connecticut) earned his first win of the summer with a lights out performance (5.2 innings pitched, 2 hits, 0 earned runs, 1 walk, 9 strikeouts), and Keene starter Richie Dell (Kent State University) suffered his first loss of 2021 (2 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K).

In the top of the third inning, the Swamp Bats scored their only run of the first game via an error and in the home half of that inning, Mountaineers first baseman Adam Retzbach (Lehigh University) homered to make it a 6-1 affair early on. Another solo home run by ‘Neers left fielder Griffin Arnone (Elon University) brought the score to 7-1 through six innings but two longballs in the bottom of the seventh inning by Vermont second baseman Kegan Calero (University of Dayton) and catcher Matt Oldham (Elon University) capped off the scoring in this rout over the Swamp Bats via home runs.

Game 2: Vermont Mountaineers 8, Keene Swamp Bats 6

The visiting Vermont Mountaineers (19-17) defeated the Keene Swamp Bats (22-14) with a Game 2 victory to sweep Sunday’s doubleheader at Alumni Field. Mountaineers starting pitcher Matthew Scibilio (Colby College) won his first decision of the summer with a strong outing on the road (5.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K), and fellow starter Richie Dell (Kent State University) was roughed up to bear his second straight loss for the Swamp Bats (2.2 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 3 K).

Vermont blew the game open with a six-run top-of-the-third-inning highlighted by a two-run double by first baseman Matt Oldham (Elon University) and a two-run single from second baseman Craig Larsen (University of Pennsylvania). The ‘Neers scored their final two runs of the second contest of the day in the visitor’s half of the fourth via a pair of RBI singles from center fielder Jack Frank (Michigan State University) and Larsen; in the bottom of the same inning, Keene shortstop Zach Bushling (University of Connecticut) hit a solo shot, his fourth homer of the season, to get his home team on the board.

In the home half of the fifth, the Swamp Bats began a comeback with the help of a wild pitch and an RBI single by Bushling to make it an 8-3 ballgame and a three-run sixth inning that saw a two-run longball by designated hitter Drake Westcott (University of Louisville) and a double from right fielder Ethan Groff (Tulane University) brought the eventual final score to 8-6.

Game 1: North Shore Navigators 8, Sanford Mainers 3

The visiting North Shore Navigators topped the Sanford Mainers in Game 1 of the teams’ Sunday doubleheader at Goodall Park. Navigators starting pitcher Aaron Groller (Seton Hall University) threw a seven-inning complete game to pick up his third win of the season (7 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), and fellow starter Jose Rodriguez (St. John’s University) bore his third loss thus far for the Mainers (3 IP, 1 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K).

A pair of singles by Sanford right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr. (Texas Rio Grande Valley) and second baseman Dominic Freeberger (University of North Carolina Asheville) in the bottom of the third inning gave their team a 2-0 advantage that would last for just a matter of minutes until North Shore tallied five runs in the visitor’s half of the fourth that saw a bases-loaded walk and a pair of two-run singles from center fielder David Kale (Fordham University) and second baseman Jacob Gustin (Bryant University).

A fifth-inning RBI single by Kale extended the Navs’ lead to 6-2 and a two-run homer off of the bat of first baseman Logan Bravo (Harvard University) in the top of the sixth capped off the visiting team’s scoring in this ballgame. Mainers center fielder Calvin Hewett (Vanderbilt University) hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to seal the first game of the doubleheader.

Game 2: Sanford Mainers 4, North Shore Navigators 3

The Sanford Mainers (14-22) walked off versus the visiting North Shore Navigators (17-16-2) in dramatic fashion in Game 2 of the teams’ doubleheader on Sunday at Goodall Park. Mainers starting pitcher Trevor LaBonte (University of Maryland) made his first start of 2021 (4 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K), and fellow starter Evan Christopulos (Bentley University) similarly made his first start of the summer for the Navigators (5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K).

North Shore jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the visitor’s half of the second inning via a stolen base and an RBI double by third baseman Matthias Haas (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) and extended their lead to a seemingly comfortable 3-0 in the top of the seventh as shortstop Jonathan Luders (Seton Hall University) singled to bring home a run.

In the home half of the final inning of action, the Mainers had other ideas and stifled the Navs’ winning plan. North Shore committed an error to drive home the first run of the comeback followed by an RBI single by third baseman Mitchell Moralez (Utah Valley University) and a game-tying bases-loaded walk that preceded a walk-off bases-loaded walk drawn by right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr. (Texas Rio Grande Valley) to split the doubleheader at home.
