Game 1: Vermont Mountaineers 6, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 3

The visiting Vermont Mountaineers topped the Winnipesaukee Muskrats in Game 1 of the teams’ doubleheader in Laconia on Saturday evening. Mountaineers starting pitcher Luke Rettig (Lehigh University) earned his first win of the summer (5 innings pitched, 5 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts), and fellow starter Reese Sharp (Indiana University) was handed the loss in his first start of 2021 for the Muskrats (4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 3 K). Ryan Steckline (Monmouth University) picked up his first save of the season for Vermont.

The Mountaineers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the visitor’s half of the second inning via an RBI single by right fielder Casey Mayes (Michigan State University) and a bases-loaded walk. Winnipesaukee cut Vermont’s lead in half in the bottom of the third courtesy of a wild pitch to score right fielder Matthew Overton (Molloy College) and took a 3-2 lead in the home half of the fourth inning thanks to an RBI base hit from third baseman Simon Baumgardt (Tulane University) and a sacrifice fly by second baseman Drew Metzdorf (Plymouth State University).

In the top of the fifth inning, the ‘Neers stormed back to reclaim a 6-3 advantage with the help of a three-run home run off of the bat of second baseman Craig Larsen (University of Pennsylvania) and a solo shot by left fielder Jack Frank (Michigan State University) in the very next at-bat.

Game 2: Vermont Mountaineers 8, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 7

The visiting Vermont Mountaineers (17-17) swept Saturday’s doubleheader versus the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (11-23) in Laconia with a comeback Game 2 victory, handing the Muskrats their sixth consecutive loss. Mountaineers starting pitcher Parker Scott (Rutgers University) threw five innings in his team’s win (6 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 6 K), as did fellow starter Justin Murray (Dartmouth College) for Winnipesaukee (5 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K). William Paoli (Ramapo College) secured his first save of the summer for Vermont.

A first-inning sacrifice fly by Mountaineers designated hitter Evan Giordano (SUNY Stony Brook) and a solo homer off of the bat of first baseman Adam Retzbach (Lehigh University) in the second gave their team an early lead that would be cut in half in the home half of the third inning via a solo longball by Muskrats left fielder Kevin Catrine (University of North Carolina Asheville). A pair of solo dingers by ‘Neers catcher Matt Oldham (Elon University) and second baseman Craig Larsen (University of Pennsylvania) made it a 4-1 contest through four innings of action.

A five-run bottom of the fifth inning by Winnipesaukee gave them a 6-4 advantage courtesy of a pair of doubles by center fielder Joshua Rodriguez (Rutgers University) and right fielder Jake LaPrairie (Tulane University) plus a two-run homer by designated hitter Cole Johnson (Kansas State University). Rodriguez tallied one final run for the ‘Skrats in the sixth inning thanks to a bases-loaded walk, but the ‘Neers had other plans in the top of the seventh and final inning with a four-run campaign to eventually win the affair that saw a sacrifice fly, an RBI base hit and a two-run double by right fielder Casey Mayes (Michigan State University).

Game 1: Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 3, Danbury Westerners 1

The visiting Martha’s Vineyard Sharks edged the Danbury Westerners in the first game of the teams’ doubleheader at Rogers Park on Saturday evening. Sharks starting pitcher and southpaw Noah Johnson (Virginia Tech University) grabbed his third win of the season with a strong five-inning outing (6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K), and fellow starter Christian Allegretti (Bryant University) bore just his first loss of the summer for the Westerners despite a great performance (5 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 9 K). Alex Galvan (University of Louisville) recorded his fourth save of 2021 for Martha’s Vineyard.

A wild pitch thrown by Johnson in the bottom of the first inning scored Danbury’s first and only run of the contest, but the Sharks wasted no time taking a 2-1 lead in the visitor’s half of the second by way of a two-run single from second baseman Jadyn Jackson (Georgia Tech). Vineyard right fielder Anthony Shaver (Florida State University) gave his team an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning via a solo homer, his second on the season.

Game 2: Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 14, Danbury Westerners 8

The visiting Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (22-13) laid it on the Danbury Westerners (18-17) to win their third straight ballgame and sweep the doubleheader on Saturday night at Rogers Park. Sharks starting pitcher Will Greer (Bucknell University) tossed four strong innings of work in the victory (3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K), and fellow starter Jacob Marshall (Le Moyne College) made his first appearance for the Westerners but was handed the loss (2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K).

The Sharks wasted no time blowing the game open in the top of the third inning, an eight-run campaign that was highlighted by home runs from shortstop Jake Berger (Harvard University) and center fielder Brad Grenkoski (Georgia Tech). Two more runs came home for the Vineyard in the fourth by way of wild pitches and a solo homer off of the bat of Danbury right fielder Henry Strmecki (University of Dayton) made it 10-1 through four innings.

A three-run longball by Berger in the fifth and a two-run shot by Westies’ left fielder Cameron Masterman (University of Louisville) plus three more runs brought the score to 13-6. Berger singled to send home the final Sharks run of the night in the visitor’s half of the sixth inning and Danbury first baseman William Gersky (University of Richmond) launched a two-run homer, his fourth homer of the season, capped off the scoring in the second seven-inning matchup of the day.

Upper Valley Nighthawks 10, North Shore Navigators 4

The Upper Valley Nighthawks (21-15) defeated the visiting North Shore Navigators (16-15) at home in White River Junction on Saturday night with the help of an early six-run inning. Nighthawks starting pitcher Alex Theis (Wright State University) won his first outing of the summer with an incredibly dominant performance (5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 12 K), and fellow starter Zach Chappell (University of North Florida) took home his third loss thus far for the Navigators (3 IP, 7 H, 8 ER, 3 B, 5 K).

North Shore tallied the first run of the contest in the top of the third inning via an error, but Upper Valley scored six runs with six hits in the home half of the inning, a campaign that featured three RBI singles plus a two-run double by third baseman Gehrig Anglin (Wright State University) to bring the score to 6-1 early on. The ‘Hawks extended their lead to 9-3 in the bottom of the fourth with the help of a bases-loaded walk, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Ronald Evans (University of North Carolina Wilmington) and the Navs tallied two more in the visitor’s half of the fifth with the help of a two-run single by infielder Matthias Haas (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo).

Upper Valley left fielder Alan Roden (Creighton University) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to score his team’s final run of the night before North Shore brought home their final of the evening thanks to an RBI single from first baseman Matt Zajec (Dartmouth College).

Newport Gulls 7, Bristol Blues 2

The visiting Newport Gulls (17-17) snapped their 10-game losing skid with a victory over the Bristol Blues (11-24) at Muzzy Field on Saturday night. Gulls starting pitcher Brandyn Garcia (Quinnipiac University) recorded his first win in over a month with a masterful performance on the bump (6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K), and fellow starter Shane Bogli (Westfield State College) suffered his first loss of the summer for the Blues (5 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K).

With the ballgame tied at 1-1 through four innings of action, Newport first baseman Bryce Hulett (University of Pittsburgh) hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning to give his visiting team a 2-1 lead. RBI from Hulett and shortstop Chase Achuff (Rollins College) and a sacrifice fly by Bristol left fielder Chris Davis (Duke University) in the sixth made it a 4-2 contest.

A wild pitch thrown by the Blues in the visitor’s half of the seventh extended the Gulls’ lead to 5-2 and two more wild pitches in the eighth brought home the final two runs of the affair for Newport, leading the squad to their first victory since July 10th.

Keene Swamp Bats 3, Sanford Mainers 2

The visiting Keene Swamp Bats (22-12) edged the Sanford Mainers (13-21) with a go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning on Saturday night at Goodall Park. Swamp Bats starting pitcher Michael Bacica (University of Maine Orono) was nearly unhittable in his squad’s victory (5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K), and fellow starter Kyle McKernan (Virginia Tech University) put up similar numbers for the Mainers (5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 5 BB, 6 K). Kaleb Corbett (University of Louisville) recorded his fifth save of 2021 for Keene.

An error committed by the Swamp Bats in the bottom of the second inning gave the home team an early lead that would quickly be tied up in the visitor’s half of the third via an error committed by Sanford. A sacrifice fly by Mainers third baseman Mitchell Moralez (Utah Valley University) scored the final run of the night for Sanford and gave the team a temporary lead before Keene designated hitter Drake Westcott (University of Louisville) doubled to tie the game up at two runs apiece.

Swamp Bats center fielder Michael Nyisztor (Rutgers University) drove home the go-ahead and eventual winning run with a single in the visitor’s half of the ninth and Corbett promptly shut the door on Sanford in the bottom of the inning to help lead their squad to victory.

Ocean State Waves 14, Valley Blue Sox 10

The Ocean State Waves (15-20) defeated the visiting Valley Blue Sox (20-14) and won their third straight ballgame in a high-scoring contest on Saturday night at Old Mountain Field. Waves starting pitcher Domenic Picone (University of Rhode Island) made his sixth start of the summer in the win (3 IP, 6 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 4 K), and fellow starter Ethan Teixeira made his first appearance of 2021 for the Blue Sox (3 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K).

A two-run home run by right fielder Luke Franzoni (Xavier University) helped give Valley a 3-0 lead in the first inning and solo shots by left fielder Brian Hart (Marist College) plus third baseman Michael Cassalegio (Palm Bech Atlantic College) gave the visiting team an early seven-run advantage in the top of the third. A three-run longball off of the bat of Ocean State designated hitter Casey Dana (University of Connecticut) in the home half of the third inning plus six more runs in the bottom of the fourth, a campaign that saw three singles and a bases-loaded walk plus a wild pitch made the score 9-7 in favor of the Waves.

Two more wild pitches thrown by the Blue Sox in the home half of the fifth inning gave the Waves two free runs before an RBI single by shortstop Jack Housinger (Xavier University) in the top of the sixth made it 11-8 before a solo homer by Waves first baseman Daniel Baruch (Boston College) extended his team’s lead to 13-8. Another homer by Cassalegio in the seventh and a sacrifice fly by Ocean State shortstop Dylan Hoy (New Jersey Institute of Technology) in the bottom of the eighth inning capped things off in this high-scoring affair.
