Game 1: Sanford Mainers 7, North Adams SteepleCats 3

The visiting Sanford Mainers defeated the North Adams SteepleCats in Game 1 of the teams’ doubleheader on Friday night at Joe Wolfe Field. Mainers starting pitcher Garret Keough (Georgetown University) earned his first win of the summer (4 innings pitched, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts), and fellow starter Jordan Yoder (Lafayette College) suffered his third loss of 2021 for the SteepleCats (4 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K).

Sanford jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning by way of an RBI double from third baseman Mitchell Moralez (Utah Valley University), a wild pitch and an error committed by North Adams and the visitors extended their lead with another three-run third inning that saw runs from catcher Shane Paradine (Stony Brook University), first baseman Ubaldo Lopez (Georgetown University) and shortstop Jonathan Barditch (Manhattan College). The ‘Cats got themselves on the board in the home half of the third via an RBI single by center fielder Justin Grech (Lafayette College) and runs from second baseman Mason Hull (Missouri State University) and catcher Jeremy Lea (University of the Pacific). An RBI base hit by Paradine in the visitor’s half of the fourth inning to cap off the scoring in the first contest.

Game 2: North Adams SteepleCats 5, Sanford Mainers 1

The North Adams SteepleCats (17-14-2) split Friday night’s doubleheader against the visiting Sanford Mainers (13-20) with a Game 2 win at Joe Wolfe Field. SteepleCats starting pitcher Vincenzo Zappulla (Merrimack College) came away victorious for the second time this summer courtesy of a lights-out performance (4 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), and fellow starter Blake Bennett (University of Massachusetts Amherst) fell to 0-3 on the season with a loss for the Mainers (4.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K).

North Adams catcher Braden Golinski (United States Military Academy) singled to bring home the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, and a four-run home half of the fifth that saw a pair of RBI singles by first baseman John Marti (University of Albany) and left fielder Charles Middleton (University of the Pacific) made it a 5-0 ballgame in favor of the ‘Cats. Sanford scored their sole run of the affair in the top of the seventh with the help of an error.

Keene Swamp Bats 3, Upper Valley Nighthawks 0

The visiting Keene Swamp Bats (21-12) shut out the Upper Valley Nighthawks (20-15) in a crucial Northern Division contest at Alumni Field on Friday night, and as a result, the Swamp Bats now have a two-game lead atop the division. Keene starting pitcher Jake Berry (University of Virginia) grabbed his second win of the season with a wonderful outing (5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 4 K), and fellow starter Cade Lommel (Creighton University) bore his third loss of the summer for the Nighthawks (3 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K). Kaleb Corbett (University of Louisville) secured his fourth save for the Swamp Bats this summer.

Keene designated hitter Ethan Groff (Tulane University) doubled to drive home the first run of the night in the second inning and two more runs scored via back-to-back bases-loaded walks in the top of the fourth as the Swamp Bats’ pitching held down Upper Valley.

Danbury Westerners 7, Mystic Schooners 5

The visiting Danbury Westerners (18-15) snapped the Mystic Schooners’ (17-15) four-game winning streak with a victory at Fitch High School on Friday night. Westerners starting pitcher Justin Solimine (Manhattan College) was awarded his first win of the summer thanks to a strong performance (5 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), and fellow starter Sean Sposato (University of Rhode Island) took on his second straight loss for the Schooners (3.2 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 K).

Danbury second baseman Matt Zaffino (Fairfield University) hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning to give the visiting team an early lead which was extended in the third by way of a solo homer from center fielder Henry Strmecki (University of Dayton) and an RBI double by designated hitter Cameron Masterman (University of Louisville) to make it 3-0. Mystic second baseman Addison Kopack (University of Rhode Island) doubled to drive home his squad’s first run of the night in the home half of the third inning, but Danbury tallied two more runs on the scoreboard with hits from right fielder Jack Roper (Palm Beach Atlantic College) and left fielder Jack Payton (University of Louisville).

The Westies scored their final two runs of the evening in the visitor’s half of the fifth inning with the help of a wild pitch and an error, and Schooners designated hitter Michael DeMartino (Southern Connecticut State University) recorded another run with a sacrifice putout in the bottom of the same inning. A ninth-inning three-run longball by Kopack brought Mystic within two, but Danbury held off the home team the rest of the way.

North Shore Navigators 4, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 1

The North Shore Navigators (16-14-2) handed the visiting Winnipesaukee Muskrats (11-21) their fourth consecutive loss with a victory at Fraser Field on Friday night. Navigators starting pitcher Christopher Shine (Seton Hall University) earned his first win of 2021 with a masterful outing at home (6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K), while fellow starter Geoff Mosseau (St. John’s University) bore his third loss of the summer for the Muskrats (4 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K). Justin Butera (Merrimack College) secured his fourth save for North Shore this season.

Center fielder Joe Lomuscio (Stanford University) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to give North Shore an early lead that was cut in half in the top of the sixth by way of an RBI single from Winnipesaukee designated hitter Drew Metzdorf (Plymouth State University). Navs infielder Jonathan Luders (Seton Hall University) singled in the home half of the same inning to make it a 3-1 contest. Luders drove home another run in the eighth inning to cap off the scoring in this affair.

Valley Blue Sox 5, Newport Gulls 4

The visiting Valley Blue Sox (20-13) held off the Newport Gulls (16-17) and handed them their 10th straight loss at Cardines Field on Friday night. Blue Sox starting pitcher Kenneth Schechter (University of Rhode Island) threw four scoreless innings in his team’s 20th win of the season, while fellow starter Kellan Tulio (University of Louisville) lasted just over three innings for the ice-cold Gulls (2 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 7 K). Ryan Towle (University of Massachusetts Lowell) recorded his fifth save of the summer for Valley.

An RBI single by Blue Sox third baseman Travis Holt (High Point University) in the top of the third inning, another by first baseman Nathan Thomas (St. Joseph’s University) in the fourth and two more from center fielder Luke Franzoni (Xavier University) and second baseman Michael Casalaggio (Palm Beach Atlantic College) gave the visiting team a 4-0 lead halfway through the ballgame. A bottom-of-the-seventh-inning grand slam by Newport right fielder Sam Cochrane (College of Charleston) briefly tied the contest until an RBI double by Holt in the top of the eighth gave Valley the lead and eventual winning 5-4 score.

Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 7, Bristol Blues 3

The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (20-13) earned their 20th victory of 2021 with a win over the visiting Bristol Blues (11-23) at the Shark Tank on Friday night. Sharks starting pitcher Daniel Hegarty (University of Kansas) secured his third win of the season with a strong performance at home (6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K), and fellow starter Kevin Vaupel (Seton Hill University) bore his fourth loss thus far for the Blues (5.2 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 8 K). Sam Brady (University of Kansas) locked down his first save of the summer for Martha’s Vineyard.

With the ballgame tied up at two runs apiece through five innings of action, the home team Sharks grabbed a 4-2 advantage by way of an RBI double from designated hitter Haydyn McGeary (Colorado Mesa University) and an RBI single by catcher Spencer Bramwell (Colorado Mesa University) and a seventh-inning solo homer off of the bat of second baseman Will Duff (Vanderbilt University) made it 5-2.

A two-run longball by Martha’s Vineyard third baseman Grant Norris (Duke University) capped off the home team’s scoring in the eighth inning before Bristol first baseman Brock Murtha (University of Notre Dame) doubled in the top of the ninth to finalize the score in this contest.
