Game 1: Upper Valley Nighthawks 10, Vermont Mountaineers 6

In the first game of a doubleheader in White River Junction, the Upper Valley Nighthawks defeated the visiting Vermont Mountaineers by putting up a 10-spot on the fellow Green Mountain State team and achieved the 20-win mark. Nighthawks relief pitcher Nick Cantone (Marist College) picked up the victory in relief of starting pitcher Jace Kaminska (Wichita State University) in the final four innings of action (6 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts), while fellow starter Alex Bryant (College of the Holy Cross) was handed the loss for the Mountaineers and his second of 2021 (2 innings pitched, 5 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 K).

Upper Valley scored three times in the first inning of Game 1 thanks to an RBI from left fielder Alan Roden (Creighton University), an RBI double by third baseman Gehrig Anglin (Wright State University) and a wild pitch. The home team put up three more runs in the bottom of the second courtesy of a two-run triple off of the bat of designated hitter Andrew Walker (Xavier University) and a sacrifice fly by second baseman Max Viera (Northeastern University) before Vermont got themselves on the board in the visitor’s half of the third inning by way of an error and an RBI single from catcher Matt Oldham (Elon University) to make it a 6-2 ballgame early.

Both squads scored once in the fourth inning as ‘Neers center fielder Tommy Courtney (University of Pennsylvania) singled to drive a run home and Roden hit a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 7-3. Vermont third baseman Connor Bertsch (Dartmouth College) singled to tally another run, but Upper Valley recorded another three-run inning in the bottom of the sixth by way of an RBI triple from Roden and a pair of RBI singles by first baseman William Sullivan (Troy University) and shortstop Luca Trigiani (St. Joseph’s University) to make it a 10-4 contest. The Mountaineers attempted a seventh-inning comeback by scoring twice more, but it would not be enough for their team to take the first game of the doubleheader.

Game 2: Vermont Mountaineers 5, Upper Valley Nighthawks 3

The visiting Vermont Mountaineers (15-16) split their doubleheader over the Upper Valley Nighthawks (20-14) with a Game 2 win in White River Junction on Wednesday night. Mountaineers relief pitcher Ryan Steckline (Monmouth University) was given the victory in relief of starting pitcher Enzo Stefanoni (Harvard University) and threw 2.1 hitless and scoreless innings, while Nighthawks starter Jordy Allard (University of Richmond) was handed the loss and his first of the season (4 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K). Cole Roland (Dartmouth College) secured his third save of 2021 for Vermont.

A five-run top of the first inning for the ‘Neers scored all of their victorious runs in this contest, a campaign that saw an RBI double by designated hitter Evan Giordano (SUNY Stony Brook), a two-run single from third baseman Matt Oldham (Elon University), an error and another RBI base hit by right fielder Jack Frank (Michigan State University). Upper Valley tallied one run in the home half of the inning as designated hitter Kyle Novak (James Madison University) singled to bring home a run, and a sacrifice fly by catcher Raphael Pelletier (Kansas State University) in the bottom of the second made it a 5-2 ballgame. Left fielder Alan Roden (Creighton University) singled to drive home the final run of the affair in the third inning.

Game 1: Valley Blue Sox 2, Ocean State Waves 1

The Valley Blue Sox edged the visiting Ocean State Waves in Game 1 of the teams’ seven-inning doubleheader in a nail-biter on Wednesday evening at MacKenzie Stadium. Blue Sox starting pitcher Grant Kipp (Yale University) earned his second win in as many appearances with a stellar outing at home (5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K), and fellow starter Nicholas Payero (Seton Hall University) suffered his second loss of the summer for the Waves (5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 B, 4 K). Antonio Balducci (University of Richmond) recorded his second save of 2021 for Valley.

Blue Sox catcher Cole Andrews (Miami University) singled to drive home his team’s first run of the contest in the bottom of the first inning only to have it tied by Ocean State center fielder Albert Choi (New Jersey Institute of Technology) in the visitor’s half of the second via a sacrifice putout. In the home half of the fourth inning, Blue Sox shortstop Mason LaPlante (Yale University) singled to bring home his squad’s go-ahead and eventual winning run.

Game 2: Valley Blue Sox 3, Ocean State Waves 0

The Valley Blue Sox (18-12) shut out the visiting Ocean State Waves (12-19) in Game 2 to secure a doubleheader sweep at MacKenzie Stadium on Wednesday night. Blue Sox starting pitcher Owen Langan (Northeastern) threw over four, one-hit, scoreless innings of work while fellow starter Chris Chaney (University of Maryland) took home the loss for the Waves and his first of the summer (4.1 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) despite a wonderful outing. Ryan Towle (University of Massachusetts Lowell) recorded his fourth save of 2021 for Valley.

Blue Sox designated hitter Cole Andrews (Miami University) drove home his team’s first run of the second contest in the home half of the fourth inning and in the sixth, a wild pitch along with an RBI single from third baseman Michael Cassaleggio (Palm Beach Atlantic College) capped off the low-scoring affair and led Valley to the doubleheader sweep.

Keene Swamp Bats 9, North Adams SteepleCats 3

The Keene Swamp Bats (20-11) won their third-straight ballgame and achieved the 20-win mark over the visiting North Adams SteepleCats (15-13-2) at Alumni Field on Wednesday night. Swamp Bats starting pitcher Zachary Davidson (Lincoln Trail College) threw nearly five innings of one-hit work at home (4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 8 K), and fellow starter Brian Zeldin (University of Pennsylvania) suffered his first loss of 2021 for the SteepleCats (3.2 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K).

Keene right fielder Troy Schreffler (University of Maryland) doubled to drive home two runs in the bottom of the first inning and hit a sacrifice fly in the home half of the third, and shortstop Zach Bushling (University of Connecticut) doubled to score another in the same inning and give his squad a quick 4-0 advantage. In the fourth inning, Keene catcher Axel Melendez (Florida Southwestern State) hit a solo home run to bring the score to 6-0. However, an error committed by the Swamp Bats in the top of the fifth scored two runs for North Adams to make it a 6-2 contest.

A pass ball in the visitor’s half of the seventh inning drove home the third and final run for the SteepleCats, but a three-run bottom of the inning by the Swamp Bats that saw another pass ball and a two-run double from designated hitter Drake Westcott (University of Louisville) capped off the scoring in this affair.

Danbury Westerners 10, Bristol Blues 2

The visiting Danbury Westerners (16-13) put up 10 runs on the Bristol Blues (10-21) at Muzzy Field on Friday night with the help of a pair of three-run innings. Westerners starting pitcher Kyle Roche (Franklin and Marshall College) picked up his first win of the summer (6 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 2 K), and fellow starter Mark Faello (Hofstra University) bore the loss for the Blues at home while putting up similar numbers to Roche (5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K).

A stolen base and an error committed by Bristol in the top of the second inning gave Danbury an early 2-0 lead that was extended to 3-0 in the third by way of an RBI single from second baseman Banks Griffith (Stetson University). Blues right fielder Anthony Galason (Elon University) singled to score his team’s first run of the night in the home half of the same inning. Both squads scored one run each in the fourth inning to bring the score to 4-2 before the Westies had their first three-run inning of the night that saw a pass ball, an RBI by Griffith and an RBI from third baseman Nicholas Lorusso (University of Maryland) in the sixth.

Danbury put up one last three-spot on Bristol in the top of the ninth inning courtesy of a pair of wild pitches and an RBI single off of the bat of shortstop Cameron Norgren (North Carolina Central University).

Sanford Mainers 14, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 4

The Sanford Mainers (11-19) scored at least 10 runs for the second straight day with a 10-run victory over the visiting Winnipesaukee Muskrats (11-19). Mainers starting pitcher Louis Stallone (University of Arkansas) tossed four scoreless and one-hit innings to propel his team to their second straight win, and fellow starter Anthony Hattrup (University of Dayton) was handed his second loss of the summer for the Muskrats (1.2 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 0 K).

Sanford wasted zero time blowing the game open with a 10-run second inning that featured a two-run home run by first baseman Dayne Leonard (Virginia Tech University), a solo shot from designated hitter Freddy Rojas Jr. (Texas Rio Grande Valley) and a two-run double off of the bat of center fielder Cam Ridley (Eastern Kentucky University).

Winnipesaukee tallied their first run of the contest in the top of the fifth inning by way of a bases-loaded walk, but the Mainers handed it to the ‘Skrats once more in the home half of the sixth inning with a four-run campaign highlighted by three RBI singles and a sacrifice fly by shortstop Jonathan Barditch (Manhattan College). Winnipesaukee scored three runs in the visitor’s half of the seventh inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from first baseman Ramon Jiminez (Boston College) and a two-run error.

Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 5, Newport Gulls 2

The visiting Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (19-12) topped the Newport Gulls (16-16) at Cardines Field on Wednesday night, handing the home team their ninth consecutive loss. Sharks starting pitcher Ryan Ramsey (University of Maryland) tossed five spectacular innings in the victory (3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K), while fellow starter Grayson Moore (Vanderbilt University) put up identical numbers in his fourth start of the summer for the Gulls (5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K). Alex Galvan (University of Louisville) secured his third save of the season for Martha’s Vineyard.

Newport shortstop Spenser Smith (Northeastern University) tallied the first run of the affair via a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning, only for Martha’s Vineyard to tie the game in the top of the fourth by drawing a bases-loaded walk. Sharks second baseman Jack O’Dowd (Vanderbilt University) singled to bring home a run and give his visiting squad a 2-1 advantage in the top of the sixth inning, but Gulls designated hitter Matthew Wood (Pennsylvania State University) promptly tied the game up at two with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning.

Martha’s Vineyard center fielder Tommy Seidl (University of Alabama) launched a two-run longball in the visitor’s half of the eighth inning to take the lead and a wild pitch thrown by Newport drove home the Sharks’ fifth and final winning run of the night.
