Game 1: North Shore Navigators 6, North Adams SteepleCats 1

The North Shore Navigators won the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the visiting North Adams SteepleCats at Fraser Field, snapping their four-game losing skid. Navigators starting pitcher Austin Amaral (Stetson University) earned his second win of the summer in a stellar performance on the mound (6 innings pitched, 2 hits, 1 earned run, 4 walks, 1 strikeout), and fellow starter Kaleb Sophy (Shippensburg University) suffered his first loss with the SteepleCats (4.1 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 1 K).

Both squads scored one run apiece in the first inning of action, North Shore center fielder Joe Lomuscio (Stanford University) tripling to drive home his team’s first of six runs on the day and NECBL Player of the Week plus SteepleCats left fielder Jeremy Lea (University of the Pacific) singled to bring home his home team’s sole run of the first contest. In the very next inning, Navs shortstop Alex Lemery (Marymount University) hit an RBI double to give the visiting team a 2-1 lead. Then, in the top of the fifth inning, North Shore exploded for four runs by way of a two-run double from designated hitter Ryan Marra (Brown University), an RBI base hit by right fielder Dylan Brazil (Stetson University) and another run batted in via a single from Lemery to cap off the scoring in the first of two seven-inning contests in Lynn.

Game 2: North Adams SteepleCats 10, North Shore Navigators 3

The visiting North Adams SteepleCats (15-12-2) split their doubleheader against the North Shore Navigators (14-14-2) at Fraser Field on Tuesday night by putting up a 10-spot on the home team. SteepleCats starting pitcher Peyton Wilson (Bowling Green State University) took home his first win of 2021 with a solid outing on the road (6 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) while fellow starter Jackson Emus (Princeton University) lasted just two innings for the Navigators (0 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 1 K).

North Adams got themselves on the board first with one run in the top of the opening inning by way of a bases-loaded walk, a lead that would be extended to 5-0 in the third thanks to a pass ball, an RBI by center fielder Justin Grech (Lafayette College), an RBI single from third baseman Lucas Donlon (Virginia Tech University) and an RBI double by left fielder John Marti (University of Albany). North Shore tallied a run in the home half of the inning via a sacrifice fly by first baseman Logan Bravo (Harvard University) to make it 5-1 one-third of the way through the contest.

‘Cats right fielder Charles Middleton (University of the Pacific) doubled in the top of the fifth inning to drive home two runners to make it a 7-1 ballgame, but the Navs cut their deficit to 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an error and a sacrifice fly from shortstop Alex Lemery (Marymount University). However, North Adams had other plans in the seventh and final inning when a two-run single by Grech and a sacrifice fly by shortstop Jon Kozarian (Slippery Rock University) brought the eventual final score to 10-3.

Sanford Mainers 10, Upper Valley Nighthawks 1

The Sanford Mainers (10-19) blew out the visiting Upper Valley Nighthawks (19-13) at Goodall Park on Tuesday night, snapping their own three-game losing skid while simultaneously ending the Nighthawks’ four-game winning streak. Sanford starting pitcher Matthew Aronson (University of Massachusetts Amherst) picked up the victory and his first of the season with a wonderful performance on the bump (5 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K) and fellow starter Jack Keenan (Marist College) bore the loss for the ‘Hawks on the road (4 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K).

A top-of-the-first-inning solo home run by Upper Valley left fielder Alan Roden (Creighton University) gave the visiting squad their singular run of the night, prompting the hosting Mainers to score 10 runs in just the first, second and sixth innings of action. Catcher Dayne Leonard (Virginia Tech University) drove home the first run to tie the game in the home half of the opening inning, followed by a two-run single from center fielder Calvin Hewett (Vanderbilt University) and a two-run double by Leonard to make it a 5-1 ballgame early on.

The sixth inning saw five more runners cross home plate for Sanford, a campaign highlighted by two runs scoring on a pair of wild pitches, an RBI triple by third baseman Mitchell Moralez (Utah Valley University) and a two-run longball courtesy of right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr. (Texas Rio Grande Valley) to cap off the runs in this high-scoring contest.

Keene Swamp Bats vs. Vermont Mountaineers - Suspended due to inclement weather in the third inning

The visiting Keene Swamp Bats (19-11) and the Vermont Mountaineers (14-15) saw their Tuesday night contest in Montpelier was suspended after three innings of action due to inclement weather at the ballpark. The stoppage came in the top of the third inning with the Mountaineers leading by a score of 5-0. Vermont catcher Matt Oldham (Elon University) launched a two-run home run in the home half of the opening inning and went on to score three more runs in the third, an inning that included an RBI single by outfielder Tommy Courtney (University of Pennsylvania).

The ballgame will be made up and resume at a later date.

Danbury Westerners 5, Valley Blue Sox 4

The Danbury Westerners (15-13) snapped their two-game losing skid with a victory over the visiting Valley Blue Sox (16-12) at Rogers Park on Tuesday night, extending the Blue Sox’s losing streak to three games. Westerners starting pitcher Angelo Tonas (Georgetown University) tossed five innings at home but was not awarded the win (6 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K), and fellow starter Robert Hensey (Monmouth University) threw nearly seven innings for Valley while putting up similar numbers to Tonas (6.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 7 K). Coleman Picard (University of Hartford) recorded his second save of the summer for Danbury.

The Blue Sox scored all four of their runs in the top of the first and fourth innings thanks to a pair of two-run homers by twin brothers Luke Franzoni (Xavier University), the NECBL’s 2021 Home Run Derby champion, and Paul Franzoni (New Jersey Institute of Technology), respectively. Thus began the Westerners’ comeback in the home half of the seventh inning in which Danbury tied the game with a four-run campaign that saw an RBI from designated hitter William Gersky (University of Richmond), an RBI double by shortstop Banks Griffith (Stetson University) and a two-run triple off of the bat of center fielder Justin Jordan (Sacred Heart University). The Westies took their eventual winning 5-4 lead in the eighth inning as first baseman Andrew Jenkins (Georgia Tech) doubled to drive home the go-ahead and victorious run.

Mystic Schooners 9, Ocean State Waves 7

The visiting Mystic Schooners (16-14) won their third-straight ballgame with a victory over the Ocean State Waves (12-17) at Old Mountain Field on Tuesday night. Schooners starting pitcher Brennan O’Neill (Seton Hall University) made his second start of the summer and threw three solid innings (4 H,1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K), while fellow starter Liam Dvorak (College of the Holy Cross) suffered his first loss of the season for the Waves (2.2 IP, 9 H, 8 ER, 1 BB, 4 K). Tim Blaisdell (University of Hartford) secured his second save of 2021 for Mystic.

Schooners left fielder Jimmy Sullivan (University of Virginia) got his visiting squad on the board first in the top of the opening inning thanks to an RBI double, a lead that would be largely extended to 6-0 in just the second inning, an explosive campaign that saw a two-run home run hit by first baseman Christopher Brito (Rutgers University) and a pair of RBI singles by second baseman Bryan Padilla (University of Connecticut) and center fielder Brendan Cumming (Princeton University), and on top of that, an error committed by Mystic scored the Waves’ first run of the night in the bottom of the inning. A solo longball by catcher Michael DeMartino (Southern Connecticut State University) and an RBI base hit from right fielder Tucker Flint (University of Maryland) brought the score to 8-1 in favor of Mystic in just the third inning.

Ocean State catcher Noah Rivera (Becker College) singled to drive home his squad’s first run of the night in the bottom of the third inning, and Cumming hit a sacrifice fly to score the Schooners’ ninth and final run of the affair. A two-run dinger off of the bat of Waves center fielder Albert Choi (New Jersey Institute of Technology) in the home half of the sixth made it a 9-4 contest and a sacrifice fly from Choi in the eighth tallied his team’s fourth run up to that point. One final sacrifice fly hit by Ocean State pinch hitter Casey Dana (University of Connecticut) in the eighth ended the scoring in this matchup.

Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 7, Bristol Blues 2

The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (18-12) ended the visiting Bristol Blues’ (10-20) five-game winning streak with a victory at the Shark Tank on Tuesday night, and now secure a one-game lead atop the Southern Division standings. Sharks starting pitcher Ryan Vanderhei (University of Kansas) was handed his first win of the season thanks to a solid performance at home (5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) while fellow starter Jack Moore (Emory University) was roughed up and took on his third loss of the summer (4.2 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 0 BB, 6 K).

A two-run home run by Blues right fielder Mark Coley (University of Rhode Island) in the top of the first inning were the only runs scored by Bristol in this affair. Martha’s Vineyard started scoring quickly with a solo homer from first baseman Ryan Hernandez (University of Houston) in the home half of the second followed by a four-run fifth inning that saw a two-run longball off of the bat of left fielder Matt Woods (Bryant University), an RBI double by shortstop Jake Berger (Harvard University) and another from catcher Spencer Bramwell (Colorado Mesa University). Woods singled in the bottom of the sixth to bring home another run and a wild pitch thrown by the Blues capped off the scoring in this affair on the Vineyard.
