Game 1: North Adams SteepleCats 4, Sanford Mainers 1

In the lone teams to play on Friday evening in the NECBL, the visiting North Adams SteepleCats defeated the Sanford Mainers in extra innings in Game 1 of the pair’s doubleheader at Goodall Park. Both starting pitchers threw five innings as the SteepleCats’ Brian Zeldin (University of Pennsylvania) allowed just one hit and no runs while striking out two, and Alexander McKenney (University of Maine Orono) gave up four hits and one run as well as three walks but punched out five batters for the Mainers.

Each squad scored just one run in the first seven regular innings of doubleheader action. North Adams designated hitter Hayden Gilliland (Tennessee Tech University) drove in the first run by way of a double in the top of the fourth inning and a solo home run by Mainers third baseman Martin Higgins (St. John’s University) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

The ‘Cats wasted no time taking the lead in the eighth inning by scoring three to make it a 4-1 ballgame in extras. An RBI base hit by shortstop Jon Kozarian (Slippery Rock University) and a two-run double by third baseman Mason Hull (Missouri State University) did the job for North Adams as they fended off Sanford in the bottom of the inning to grab the win.

Game 2: Sanford Mainers 9, North Adams SteepleCats 3

The Sanford Mainers (5-13) split their doubleheader against the visiting North Adams Steeplecats (9-8-2) with a win in Game 2 on Friday night at Goodall Park. Mainers starting pitcher Kyle McKernan (Virginia Tech University) earned his first win of the season with a spectacular performance (5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K), and Peyton Wilson (Bowling Green State University) suffered his second loss of the summer for the SteepleCats (4.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 K).

A three-run bottom of the second inning gave Sanford an early 3-0 advantage over North Adams courtesy of a two-run single by left fielder Evan Sleight (Rutgers University) and an RBI single from shortstop Pierce Gallo (Clemson University). The SteepleCats got one run back in the visitor’s half of the third with an RBI base hit by third baseman Mason Hull (Missouri State University) to make it a 3-1 ballgame. The Mainers tallied two more runs in the fourth by way of another RBI single from Gallo and a sacrifice fly by right fielder Derek Smith (Bryant University) to extend their team’s lead to 5-1.

The Mainers scored another two runs in the home half of the fifth inning to bring the score to 7-1 via an RBI from third baseman Mitchell Moralez (Utah Valley University) and a wild pitch. North Adams drove home their two final runs of the ballgame in the top of the sixth with the help of an RBI base hit by left fielder Turner Grau (Youngstown State University) and another wild pitch. A two-run single by Sanford second baseman Martin Higgins (St. John’s University) in the bottom of the sixth brought the score to 9-3, which would be the final in this one.
