Game 1: Mystic Schooners 4, Danbury Westerners 0

The Mystic Schooners shut out the visiting Danbury Westerners in the first game of the teams’ Monday doubleheader at Fitch High School. Schooners starting pitcher Sam Favieri (University of Connecticut) allowed just one Westerners hit in his second start of the summer (3.2 innings pitched, 0 earned runs, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts) while fellow starter Ethan Clough (Long Beach State University) allowed all four of Mystic’s runs and suffered his first loss of 2021 (5 IP, 9 hits, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K).

The Schooners wasted no time getting themselves on the board in the first of two seven-inning matchups by way of a sacrifice fly from right fielder Barry Walsh (Boston College) in the bottom of the opening inning. Catcher Michael DeMartino (Southern Connecticut State University) launched a solo home run in the home half of the fourth, his second long ball in as many games played, to extend his team’s lead over Danbury to 2-0. A two-run homer off of the bat of designated hitter Jimmy Sullivan (University of Virginia) in the fifth inning essentially secured his squad’s victory over the Westerners at home and capped off the scoring in this one.

Game 2: Mystic Schooners 7, Danbury Westerners 4

The Mystic Schooners (15-14) swept Monday’s doubleheader at Fitch High School versus the visiting Danbury Westerners (14-13) in the first day of NECBL action back from the All-Star Game. The Schooners’ Jonathan Velazquez (Stetson University) earned the win in relief of starter Jordan Warecke (Manhattan College) with four innings of solid work (2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K) while Westerners starter Erubiel Candelario (Marist College) suffered his second loss in as many appearances this summer (3 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K).

Mystic jumped out to an early two-run lead through two innings with the help of an error and an RBI single by right fielder Benjamin Maycock (University of Connecticut). A three-run homer by Schooners shortstop Stanton Leuthner (Stony Brook University), his first longball of the summer, extended his team’s lead to 5-0 in the third inning. Danbury tallied three runs of their own in the fourth to cut their deficit to 5-3 courtesy of an RBI double by second baseman John Anderson (Georgia Tech), a pass ball and an RBI base hit from designated hitter Cameron Masterman (University of Louisville).

Both teams scored at least once in the sixth inning, the Westies bringing home their final run of the day via a Masterman double and Mystic tallied their final two by way of an RBI single from center fielder Brendan Cumming (Princeton) and a sacrifice fly off of Tucker Flint’s (University of Maryland) bat to bring the eventual final score to 7-4.

Bristol Blues 3, Newport Gulls 1

The Bristol Blues (10-19) simultaneously won their fifth straight ballgame while handing the visiting Newport Gulls (16-5) their eighth straight loss in a close victory at Muzzy Field on Monday night. Blues starting pitcher Shane Bogli (Westfield State College) picked up his first win of 2021 in his first start but sixth appearance of the season with a stellar outing to lead his team to victory (7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), while fellow starter Nelson Berkwich (Vanderbilt University) was handed the loss despite a similar great outing for the Gulls (5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K). Hector Alejandro (University of Connecticut) secured his first save of the summer for Bristol.

A second-inning error committed by Newport drove home the Blues’ first run of the night to give the home team an early 1-0 advantage and the squad’s second run crossed home plate in the bottom of the third thanks to a wild pitch thrown by the Gulls. Newport’s sole tally of the night came in the visitor’s half of the fourth inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly by shortstop Chase Achuff (Rollins College) to bring the score to 2-1, but Bristol tacked on a much-needed eighth-inning insurance run with an RBI single by shortstop Christian Fedko (University of Connecticut) to seal their 10th win of 2021 and fifth straight.

Keene Swamp Bats 7, North Shore Navigators 4

The Keene Swamp Bats (19-11) defeated the visiting North Shore Navigators (13-13-2) and handed the Massachusetts team their fourth straight loss on Monday night at Alumni Field. Swamp Bats starting pitcher Taylor Lepard (Southern New Hampshire University) threw four innings of work for his winning home team (4 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) and fellow starter Aaron Groller (Seton Hall University) took on his second loss of the season for the Navigators (4 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 3 K).

Keene jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with the help of an RBI single from right fielder Troy Schreffler (University of Maryland), an advantage over North Shore that would be extended to 4-0 by way of a two-run longball by left fielder Thomas Joseph (Jacksonville University) and a solo shot off of the bat of Schreffler in the home half of the third. The Swamp Bats would go on to tally two more runs in the fourth as Joseph singled to drive one in and Joseph hitting into a fielder’s choice to bring home another as Keene’s corner outfield pair did major damage against the Navs.

North Shore got themselves on the scoreboard at last in the top of the fifth inning thanks to an RBI single from center fielder Joe Lomuscio (Stanford University) and a sacrifice fly by catcher Cal Christofori (Yale University) to cut their deficit to 6-2. A solo home run by Navigators first baseman Logan Bravo (Harvard University) in the visitor’s half of the seventh to record their third run, and the Swamp Bats drove home their seventh and final run of the night via a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. A ninth-inning sacrifice fly from North Shore designated hitter Ryan Marra (Brown University) recorded his squad’s final run of the evening, however it would not be enough to overpower the Northern Division leader Keene Swamp Bats on their home turf.
