Game 1: Keene Swamp Bats 9, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 8

The Keene Swamp Bats defeated the visiting Winnipesaukee Muskrats by just one run in Game 1 of the teams’ Saturday evening doubleheader at Alumni Field. Swamp Bats relief pitcher Bryce Hellgeth (University of Dayton) earned his first win of the season through nine appearances by locking down the Muskrats in the final three innings of action (2.2 innings pitched, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 0 walks, 2 strikeouts), while Winnipesaukee starter Kyle Muller (Rutgers University) suffered his second straight loss (4.1 IP, 11 H, 8 ER, 2 BB, 2 K).

The scoring started early in this contest as Keene jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning by way of an RBI single from left fielder Thomas Joseph (Jacksonville University) and a pair of RBI by center fielder Troy Schreffler (University of Maryland) and shortstop Daniel DiGeorgio (Rutgers University). The ‘Skrats did not waste time getting back into the game with the help of two runs via a single by third baseman Gustavo Sosa (Rutgers University) in the visitor’s half of the third, but the Swamp Bats got one back in the next half-inning by thanks to a solo home run by first baseman Noah Martinez (Central Connecticut State University) to make it a 4-2 ballgame.

Winnipesaukee grabbed a 5-4 edge in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a two-run homer by Sosa and a solo longball from right fielder Jake LaPrairie (Tulane University) and added on to it in the top of the fifth with the help of another solo dinger from left fielder Cole Johnson (Kansas State University) and a sacrifice fly from center fielder Joshua Rodriguez (Rutgers University) to make it 7-4. The Swamp Bats snatched their lead back in the bottom of the fifth by way of two more longballs, this time a three-run shot by right fielder Ethan Groff (Tulane University) and a two-run homer from catcher Axel Melendez (Florida Southwestern State College) to score their final runs of the first game. Sosa launched another bomb for the Muskrats in the top of the sixth inning to bring the eventual final score to 9-8 in a first game filled with moonshots.

Game 1: Sanford Mainers 9, Vermont Mountaineers 7

The visiting Sanford Mainers edged the Vermont Mountaineers in comeback fashion in Game 1 of the teams’ doubleheader on Saturday evening in Montpelier. This game picked up from where the two squads left off on July 7 when the contest was suspended due to a light malfunction.

The ballgame resumed in the fifth inning at a score of 6-2 in favor of the Mountaineers as part of the first game of the doubleheader. A pair of RBI singles by Sanford outfielder Freddy Rojas Jr. (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) and infielder Mitchell Moralez (Utah Valley University) cut their team’s deficit to just 6-4 in the fifth inning. Vermont tallied another run in the home half of the seventh by way of an RBI double from outfielder Tommy Courtney (University of Pennsylvania) to make it a 7-4 contest, but that would be the final instance in which a Mountaineer crossed home plate in this one.

The Mainers produced a major rally in which five runs were scored in the visitor’s half of the eighth inning highlighted by a bases-loaded walk, an RBI single from infielder Pierce Gallo (Clemson University) and a bases-clearing triple by Moralez to cap off the scoring in this exciting affair at the Montpelier Recreation Field.

Game 2: Vermont Mountaineers 3, Sanford Mainers 2

The Vermont Mountaineers (14-14) walked off against the visiting Sanford Mainers (9-19) to split Saturday’s doubleheader in Montpelier, promptly evening their record to .500. Mountaineers starting pitcher Josh O’Neill (Stony Brook University) tossed five solid innings of work to help lead his team to victory (5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K) and fellow starter Kyle McKernan (Virginia Tech University) similarly threw five complete for the Mainers (3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K).

Sanford scored both of their runs in the top of the second inning by way of an RBI from second baseman Jonathan Barditch (Manhattan College) and an error committed by Vermont. Thus began the ‘Neers comeback in the home half of the third inning as an RBI base hit by second baseman Craig Larsen (University of Pennsylvania) got his team on the board and another Larsen RBI in the fifth tied the ballgame up at two. A two-out throwing error in the bottom of the seventh and final inning of action scored Vermont’s winning and walk-off run at home.

Ocean State Waves 6, Newport Gulls 3

The Ocean State Waves (12-16) handed the visiting Newport Gulls (16-14) their seventh straight loss on Saturday night at Old Mountain Field ahead of Sunday’s All-Star Game. The ballgame was cut short through five-and-a-half innings due to fog, but the final score counts. Waves starting pitcher Domenic Picone (University of Rhode Island) threw three hitless and scoreless innings of work (1 BB, 3 K) and fellow starter Luke Schauer (University of Virginia) similarly tossed three innings for the Gulls (5 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 K).

An RBI triple by Ocean State right fielder Slade Wilks (University of Southern Mississippi) gave his squad an early 1-0 lead through the first inning and shortstop Dylan Hoy (Marist College) extended it in the bottom of the second by way of a two-run homer, his second longball of 2021. Center fielder Ian Ostberg (Quinnipiac University) drew a bases-loaded walk to drive home the Waves’ fourth run of the night.

Newport got two runs back in the visitor’s half of the fourth inning to cut their deficit to 4-2 with the help of a pair of RBI from catcher Matthew Wood (Pennsylvania State University) and first baseman Bryce Hulett (University of Pittsburgh), but a two-run dinger by Ostberg in the fifth extended Ocean State’s lead over the Gulls to 6-2. An RBI single from Hulett cut Newport’s deficit in half again, but that would be all she wrote once the fog kept this affair from continuing.
