Upper Valley Nighthawks 4, Sanford Mainers 1

The Upper Valley Nighthawks (18-12) became the first New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) team to reach 18 wins this summer and won their third straight ballgame with a victory over the visiting Sanford Mainers (8-18) on Friday night in White River Junction. This massive win for Upper Valley tied them with the Keene Swamp Bats for first place in the Northern Division. Nighthawks starting pitcher Cade Lommel (Creighton University) earned his first win of the summer in a dominant performance at home (5 innings pitched, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts) while fellow starter Garret Keough (Georgetown University) suffered the loss for the Mainers (2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K). Sanford drove home their sole run of the evening in the visitor’s half of the fourth inning with the help of an RBI by catcher Shane Paradine (Stony Brook University) to cut their deficit to just 2-1. An RBI double by Upper Valley third baseman Gehrig Anglin (Wright State University) in the home half of the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly from left fielder Andrew Walker (Xavier University) in the sixth capped off the scoring in this one and helped lead their home squad to victory.

Winnipesaukee Muskrats 6, North Shore Navigators 5

An early four-run inning by the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (11-17) helped lead them to victory over the visiting North Shore Navigators (13-12-2) who have now lost three straight ballgames and are slipping in the Northern Division standings. Muskrats starting pitcher Justin Murray (Dartmouth College) tossed nearly seven crucial innings to earn his fourth win of the summer (6.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) and fellow starter Zach Chappell (University of North Florida) was handed the loss for the Navigators on the road (4.1 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 8 K). Anthony Hattrup (University of Dayton) recorded the save for Winnipesaukee.

North Shore scored first in the opening inning by way of a solo homer from first baseman Logan Bravo (Harvard University), but a four-run home half of the second that saw an RBI single from first baseman Josh Petrucci (University of Massachusetts Amherst) and a three-run longball by left fielder Kevin Catrine (University of North Carolina Asheville) quickly gave the Muskrats a 4-1 edge. A wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning recorded another run for Winnipesaukee and another solo homer from Navs second baseman Jacob Gustin (Bryant University) brought the score to 5-2.

Another RBI by Catrine scored the final run for the ‘Skrats in the sixth inning in this affair, which thus began North Shore’s comeback in the late innings.
