Game 1: Danbury Westerners 3, Newport Gulls 2

The Danbury Westerners defeated the visiting Newport Gulls in a tight game at Rogers Park on Thursday afternoon as part of Game 1 of the teams’ doubleheader. Westerners starting pitcher Christian Allegretti (Bryant University) earned his first win of the season in a dominant performance at home (6 innings pitched, 5 hits, 2 runs/earned runs, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts) and fellow starter Brandyn Garcia (Quinnipiac University) suffered his third loss of the summer for the Gulls (5 IP, 6 H, 3 R/ER, 1 BB, 8 K). Michael Farinelli (Northwestern University) secured his first save of 2021 for Danbury in the seventh and final inning of action.

A leadoff bottom of the first-inning solo home run by Westerners center fielder John Anderson (Georgia Tech) gave the home team an early 1-0 lead that would promptly be tied in the visitor’s half of the second by way of another solo homer from Gulls first baseman Bryce Hulett (University of Pittsburgh). Newport scored their second and final run of the matchup in the top of the third inning courtesy of an RBI single by catcher Matthew Wood (Pennsylvania State University) to take a temporary 2-1 advantage as the Westies’ Anderson launched his second and the third dinger of the contest, a two-run shot, to give Danbury an eventual winning 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Game 2: Danbury Westerners 8, Newport Gulls 2

The Danbury Westerners (13-11) handed the visiting Newport Gulls (16-12) their fifth straight loss with a doubleheader sweep at Rogers Park on Thursday night, a six-run first inning propelling them to victory. The Gulls have now quickly fallen to third place in a crowded top of the Southern Division.

Westerners relief pitcher Josh Brown (University of Houston) picked up the win with a shutdown outing (3 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) and starting pitcher Blake Mahmood (Tulane University) was handed the loss for the Gulls in a rough outing (0.2 IP, 3 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 0 K).

A grand slam from Danbury first baseman William Gersky (University of Richmond) and an RBI single by third baseman Zach Selinger (Fordham University) plus a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch gave the home team six runs through just one inning of action, setting them up for success in Game 2. Newport’s only two runs of this game came from a two-run homer by second baseman Dawson Brigman (Santa Clara University) in the visitor’s half of the third inning.

The Westies tallied another run in the bottom of the fourth inning by way of a solo dinger from shortstop Sebastian Murillo (Long Beach State University) and one more in the sixth with an RBI by catcher Luke Shliger (University of Maryland) to help lead their team to victory.

Game 1: Upper Valley Nighthawks 1, North Shore Navigators 0

The visiting Upper Valley Nighthawks needed just one run to top the North Shore Navigators in Game 1 of the teams’ Thursday evening doubleheader at Fraser Field. Nighthawks starting pitcher Jordy Allard (University of Richmond) added to his perfect record this summer by picking up his fourth victory in a great performance on the bump (6 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) and fellow starter and Pitcher of the Week Luke Marshall (Stonehill College) suffered the tough loss despite a similarly wonderful showing at home for the Navigators (5 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). Connor Holden (Murray State University) recorded the save for Upper Valley.

The sole run scored in this contest came in the top of the first inning by ‘Hawks left fielder Alan Roden (Creighton University) by way of an RBI single, and it was all the visiting team needed to secure the win in Game 1.

Game 2: Upper Valley Nighthawks 4, North Shore Navigators 3

Despite a major comeback by the North Shore Navigators (13-11-2) in the sixth inning that led to extra innings, the visiting Upper Valley Nighthawks (17-12) swept the Navs with a Game 2 win in the teams’ doubleheader at Fraser Field on Thursday night. These two crucial wins by the Nighthawks brought them to second place and just one game back of the first-place Keene Swamp Bats in the Northern Division standings, pushing North Shore down to third place tied with the North Adams SteepleCats.

Upper Valley starting pitcher Jake Gigliotti (Northeastern University) had a strong scoreless performance in the second seven-inning contest (4.2 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K) and fellow starter Christopher Shine (Seton Hall University) similarly threw a great outing (6 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K).

A massive three-run top of the first inning by the ‘Hawks that featured a two-run single by second baseman Max Viera (Northeastern University) and an RBI single from third baseman Gehrig Anglin (Wright State University) in the very next at-bat helped propel the visitors to a sweep. The Navigators had a three-run sixth inning of their own to tie the ballgame and eventually force an extra eighth inning with the help of a solo homer by first baseman Logan Bravo (Harvard University) and a two-run base hit from left fielder Hunter Baldwin (Harvard University).

Upper Valley had other plans in the top of the eighth when right fielder Parker Haskin (Elon University) hit a sacrifice fly to win the game by one run, and relief pitcher Zane Kmietek (Marist College) shut down the Navs in the bottom of the inning, earning the victory for his squad.

Game 1: Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 2, Valley Blue Sox 1

The visiting Martha’s Vineyard Sharks edged the Valley Blue Sox in a nail-biter at MacKenzie Stadium in Game 1 of the teams’ doubleheader on Thursday. Sharks starting pitcher Noah Johnson (Virginia Tech University) took his second win of the season in a masterful performance for his road team (6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) and fellow starter Jonathan Kelly (Xavier University) bore his second straight loss for the Blue Sox despite a similarly great outing (5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K). Alex Galvan (University of Louisville) secured his second straight save for the Vineyard.

All three total runs in this seven-inning matchup were scored in the fifth inning. A two-run homer by Sharks leadoff hitter and first baseman Matt Woods (Bryant University) did the job for Martha’s Vineyard, and an RBI single by Valley shortstop Mason LaPlante (Yale University) in the bottom half scored his team’s sole run of the game and capped off the scoring.

Game 2: Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 4, Valley Blue Sox 2

In a huge Game 2 win by the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (17-11) over the Valley Blue Sox (16-11), the Sharks dethroned the Blue Sox from first place and grabbed a half-game lead over them in the Southern Division standings with a doubleheader sweep at MacKenzie Stadium on Thursday night. Martha’s Vineyard starting pitcher Will Greer (Bucknell University) helped lead his squad to victory putting four innings of work under his belt (4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) and fellow starter Owen Langan (Northeastern University) tossed three nearly perfect innings for Valley despite the loss (3 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K).

An RBI triple by Blue Sox infielder Jack Housinger (Xavier University) and a sacrifice fly by catcher Cole Andrews (Miami University) in the bottom of the first inning helped give their squad an early 2-0 lead that would be erased by the visiting Sharks. A two-run home run by Martha’s Vineyard infielder Michael Brown (University of Washington) tied the game up at two in the top of the fifth and a solo homer from fellow infielder Ryan Hernandez (University of Houston) gave the visiting team a 3-2 lead through six innings. Sharks catcher Matt Woods (Bryant University) drove home one more run for his team in the top of the seventh and final inning via an RBI single to make things final in this one.

Winnipesaukee Muskrats 17, Keene Swamp Bats 8

The Winnipesaukee Muskrats (10-17) achieved the 10-win mark in a rout over the visiting Keene Swamp Bats (17-10) in Laconia on Thursday night. Muskrats starting pitcher Geoff Mosseau (St. John’s University) earned the win at home (5 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) and fellow starter Zachary Davidson (Lincoln Trail College) suffered the loss for the Swamp Bats, who now remain just one win ahead of the second-place Upper Valley Nighthawks atop the Northern Division (2.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K).

A first-inning RBI single by NECBL Player of the Week and Keene center fielder Thomas Joseph (Jacksonville University) gave his team an early 1-0 lead that would quickly be erased in the bottom of the second with a three-run home run by Winnipesaukee shortstop Kohl Abrams (University of North Carolina Asheville), his first longball of 2021. Another three-run dinger by third baseman Simon Baumgardt (Tulane University) and a solo homer from second baseman Drew Metzdorf (Plymouth State University) in the home half of the third inning extended their team’s lead to 7-1.

The Swamp Bats got two runs back in the top of the fourth inning by way of a two-run home run from third baseman Ronny Medina (Florida Southwestern State College), but the ‘Skrats doubled that in the bottom half that featured a two-run shot by designated hitter Gustavo Sosa (Rutgers University) and two solo dingers to bring the score to 11-3 early. Keene’s Troy Schreffler (University of Maryland) launched a solo homer of his own in the top of the seventh, but the Muskrats tallied another run in the sixth followed by five more in the seventh, three of which scoring via bases-loaded walks to cap off Winnipesaukee’s scoring in this one and make it a 17-4 contest. The Swamp Bats weren’t done as first baseman Noah Martinez (Central Connecticut State University) cracked a grand slam to finish off this extremely high-scoring affair.

North Adams SteepleCats 6, Vermont Mountaineers 2

Vermont got themselves on the scoreboard first in the top of the opening inning by way of an error and an RBI single by outfielder Tommy Courtney (University of Pennsylvania) to make it a 2-0 contest in the third in favor of the visiting team, but it would be the final time in which a Mountaineer crossed home plate in this one. North Adams stormed back and gave themselves a 4-2 advantage with the help of an RBI from infielder John Marti (University of Albany), an RBI double by catcher Jeremy Lea (University of the Pacific) and a two-run double off of the bat of outfielder Charles Middleton (University of the Pacific). Bristol Blues 11, Mystic Schooners 5

The Bristol Blues (8-19-1) won their third straight ballgame (technically fourth if you count their Wednesday exhibition win over Team Israel!) with a dominant victory over the visiting Mystic Schooners (13-13) at Muzzy Field on Thursday night. Blues starting pitcher Garrett Coe (University of Connecticut) earned his first win of the summer thanks to a stellar outing by the Connecticut native (6 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) and fellow starter Anthony Mozzicato (Central Connecticut State University) picked up the loss for the Schooners (4 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K). Mozzicato’s brother, Frank, was recently drafted No. 7 overall in the Major League Baseball (MLB) draft.

Bristol jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning with the help of an error, a pair of RBI doubles by first baseman Brennen Dorighi (Wofford College) and right fielder Mark Coley (University of Rhode Island) plus an RBI single from designated hitter Anthony Galason (Elon University). A two-run homer by Mystic catcher Michael DeMartino (Southern Connecticut State University) made it a 4-2 score through two innings. A pair of RBI singles by Blues center fielder Austin White (Coastal Carolina University) and left fielder Chris Davis (Duke University) extended their team’s lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning.

Another pair of RBI base hits by Galason and second baseman Tyson Cooper (Pennsylvania State University) brought the score to 8-2 after five innings of action. A pass ball in the top of the eighth inning brought home one run for the Schooners, but the Blues scored three more times in the bottom half by way of a bases-loaded walk, a sacrifice fly by catcher Chad Knight (Duke University) and another Dorighi RBI double made it an 11-3 contest. Two more Schooner runners crossed home plate in the top of the ninth thanks to a two-run single from center fielder Brendan Cumming (Princeton University), but it would not be enough to overpower the red-hot Bristol Blues on their home turf.
