Game 1: Upper Valley Nighthawks 2, Sanford Mainers 1

Game 1 of Tuesday’s seven-inning doubleheader featuring the visiting Upper Valley Nighthawks and the Sanford Mainers went to extra innings and saw the Nighthawks come away victorious at Goodall Park. Upper Valley starting pitcher Jack Keenan (Marist College) tossed five spectacular innings of baseball in his team’s win (2 hits, 1 run/earned run, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts) and fellow starter Alexander McKenney (University of Maine Orono) put up similar numbers for the Mainers (2.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 3 K). Zane Kmietek (Marist College) secured his third win of the summer for the Nighthawks.

Upper Valley designated hitter Ronald Evans (University of North Carolina Wilmington) got his team on the board in the top of the second inning with an RBI single, a score that was tied in the home half of the fifth inning courtesy of an RBI base hit from Sanford center fielder Cam Ridley (Eastern Kentucky University). The 1-1 contest remained tied after seven innings and thus forced an extra eighth inning in which the ‘Hawks wasted no time scoring an eventual winning run to take the 2-1 edge.

Game 2: Sanford Mainers 7, Upper Valley Nighthawks 2

The Sanford Mainers (8-16) split Tuesday night’s doubleheader against the visiting Upper Valley Nighthawks (15-12) with a Game 2 victory at Goodall Park. Mainers starting pitcher Jacob Edwards (University of North Carolina Ashveille) picked up his first win of the summer with a wonderful outing (4 IP, 4 H, 2 R/ER, 3 BB, 2 K) and fellow starter Alex Theis (Wright State University) bore his second loss of the summer with the Nighthawks (4 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K).

A two-run single by Upper Valley catcher Raphael Pelletier (Kansas State University) drove home his team’s only runs of the evening in the visitor’s half of the second inning, but a three-run home run from Sanford third baseman Mitchell Moralez (Utah Valley University) in the bottom of the third quickly gave the home team their first lead of the day. Mainers center fielder Cam Ridley (Eastern Kentucky University) drove home his squad’s fourth run of the contest with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly and two RBI from Moralez and left fielder Evan Sleight (Rutgers University) in the fifth extended Sanford’s lead over the ‘Hawks to 6-2. Moralez drove home his fourth RBI of the evening in the home half of the sixth inning and his team’s final run of the day to lead his teammates to a Game 2 victory.

A wild pitch thrown by the Muskrats in the top of the sixth tallied another run for the Swamp Bats to extend their lead over the home team to 3-0, and a sacrifice fly by right fielder Matt Almonte (Pace University) in the top of the eighth made it 4-0. An error committed by the ‘Skrats in the ninth inning recorded Keene’s fifth and final run of the evening and Winnipesaukee right fielder Matthew Overton (Molloy College) drove home the singular run of the night for his squad in the bottom of the ninth.
