Game 1: Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 4, Newport Gulls 2

The visiting Martha’s Vineyard Sharks edged the Newport Gulls in seven innings in Game 1 of the teams’ Monday evening doubleheader at Cardines Field, snapping the home squad’s six-game win streak. Sharks starting pitcher Daniel Hegarty (University of Kansas) earned his second win of the summer with a stellar performance on the mound (5 innings pitched, 3 hits, 1 run/earned run, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts) and fellow starter Grayson Moore (Vanderbilt University) suffered his first loss of 2021 for the Gulls (5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K). Alex Galvan (University of Louisville) recorded his first save of the summer for Martha’s Vineyard.

An RBI single by Sharks shortstop Jake Berger (Harvard University) in the visitor’s half of the third inning gave his team an early 1-0 lead, but an RBI base hit from Newport catcher Jordon Rogers (University of Michigan) in the bottom of the fourth tied the ballgame up. Martha’s Vineyard exploded for three runs in the top of the sixth inning courtesy of an RBI single by catcher Spencer Bramwell (Colorado Mesa University) and a two-run error committed by the Gulls to grab a 4-1 advantage. Newport designated hitter Gavin Casas (Vanderbilt University) drove home the final run of the contest in the home half of the sixth, but it would not be enough to overpower the Sharks on land.

Game 2: Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 5, Newport Gulls 3

The visiting Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (15-9) swept Monday’s doubleheader against the Newport Gulls (16-9) at Cardines Field to bring themselves within just .5 games of the Gulls’ top spot in the Southern Division standings. Both starting pitchers tossed 4-⅓ innings of work as the Sharks’ Ryan Vanderhei (University of Kansas) set up his squad for success (3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) and Newport’s Nelson Berkwich (Vanderbilt University) made his first appearance of the season and put up eerily similar numbers to Vanderhei (4.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 6 K).

The Gulls jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the opening inning thanks to an error committed by Martha’s Vineyard, a lead that would be extended to 2-0 in the home half of the third by way of an RBI single from first baseman Gavin Casas (Vanderbilt University). The Sharks finally got on the board in the top of the fifth inning with the help of an error and a two-run single by second baseman Will Duff (Vanderbilt University) and grabbed a 3-2 lead.

Newport tied the game courtesy of an RBI single by right fielder Sam Cochrane (College of Charleston) in the home half of the fifth, but that would be the final instance in which a Gull crossed home plate in this matchup. Martha’s Vineyard came in clutch in the seventh and final inning of the ballgame via an RBI single by left fielder Tommy Siedl (University of Alabama) and a sacrifice fly by Duff to give their squad an eventual winning 5-3 lead.

Bristol Blues 9, Danbury Westerners 6

The visiting Bristol Blues (6-19-1) handed the Danbury Westerners (11-11) their third straight loss on Monday night Rogers Park with the help of four home runs. Blues starting pitcher Jack Moore (Emory University) earned his first win of the summer (5 IP, 4 H, 3 R/ER, 2 BB, 8 K) and fellow starter Angelo Tonas (Georgetown University) was handed his second loss of 2021 for the Westerners (4 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K). James Kirkpatrick (Harvard University) recorded his third save of the season for Bristol.

The Blues jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the visitor’s half of the second inning thanks to a two-run single by catcher Tyler Keith (Post University), an advantage that would be cut in half in the bottom of the third by Danbury third baseman John Anderson (Georgia Tech) with an RBI single. A solo homer by Bristol right fielder Anthony Galason (Elon University) in the top of the fourth inning extended his team’s lead to 3-1 and another by second baseman Christian Fedko (University of Connecticut) in the fifth made it a 4-1 ballgame. A proceeding two-run dinger by Anderson brought the Westerners within just one run again in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Bristol exploded for three runs in the top of the sixth inning with RBI from Galason and Keith plus a solo homer by shortstop Brock Murtha (University of Notre Dame) to give their squad a 7-3 edge. Another solo shot for the Blues from left fielder William Christopher Davis (Duke University) in the seventh inning brought the score to 8-3, but the pesky Westies drove home three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double by Anderson and RBI from left fielder Cameron Masterman (University of Louisville) and designated hitter Andrew Jenkins (Georgia Tech) to bring themselves within a couple of runs. Davis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, giving his team an insurance run and an eventual winning 9-6 lead.

This ballgame remained scoreless until the home half of the sixth inning when the Navigators drove home one run courtesy of an error committed by the Swamp Bats infield.
