Sanford Mainers 7, North Adams SteepleCats 6

The Sanford Mainers (7-15) edged the visiting North Adams SteepleCats (11-11-2) at Goodall Park on Sunday night in a close game. Mainers starting pitcher Kyle McKernan (Virginia Tech University) tossed 3-⅓ innings of work while allowing six hits and all six of North Adams’s runs, only five eanred, walking one batter and striking out three. Fellow starter Samuel Bennett (University of Pennsylvania) threw five innings of solid baseball as he allowed just three hits and three runs, two earned, and worked around two walks and punched out six batters for the SteepleCats. Gavin Hinchliffe (University of Delaware) recorded his first save of the season for Sanford.

A three-run bottom of the first inning for the Mainers gave the home team an early 3-0 lead with the help of a an RBI double by second baseman Martin Higgins (St. John’s University) and a two-run single from third baseman Mitchell Moralez (Utah Valley University). A subsequent two-run home run by North Adams designated hitter Hayden Gilliland (Tennessee tech University) in the visitor’s half of the second inning made it a 3-2 contest, Gilliland’s second longball of the summer.

The SteepleCats exploded for a four-run inning in the top of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead, the final instance in which the visiting team would score in this one, thanks to a two-run double by Gilliland and another from center fielder Justin Grech (Lafayette College). Thus began Sanford’s comeback in the home half of the sixth inning as Moralez hit a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch drove home two runs in the inning to bring the score to 6-5. The Mainers scored their final two runs of the contest to take an eventual winning 7-6 advantage courtesy of an RBI triple by catcher Dayne Leonard (Virginia Tech University) and an RBI base hit from first baseman Dominic Freeberger (University of North Carolina Asheville) in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Keene Swamp Bats 6, Upper Valley Nighthawks 4

The visiting Keene Swamp Bats (16-7) got back to their winning ways on Sunday night in White River Junction with a victory over the Upper Valley Nighthawks (14-11). Starting pitcher Michael Bacica (University of Maine Orono) tossed 3-⅓ innings of four-hit work while allowing just one earned run and three walks while striking out no batters for the Swamp Bats, and fellow starter Cameron Bye (Wichita State University) threw five innings allowing six hits and three earned runs while working around three walks and striking out three batters.

Keene jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with the help of a two-run error committed by the Nighthawks as well as a wild pitch to drive home another run. Upper Valley made it a 3-2 ballgame in the home half of the second inning courtesy of an RBI double by catcher Parker Haskin (Elon University) and an RBI from Kyle Novak (James Madison University). Another wild pitch thrown by the Nighthawks in the visitor’s half of the sixth inning brought home a fourth run for the Swamp Bats to extend their lead to 4-2.

A seventh-inning RBI double by the Swamp Bats’ Ethan Groff (Tulane University) brought home Keene’s fifth run of the night and a two-run double by Haskin in the bottom of the eighth brought the score to 5-4 as the visitor’s lead remained. Keene’s Zach Bushling (University of Connecticut) hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning of action to bring home an insurance run for his squad that eventually helped lead them to a 6-4 victory in Vermont.

Mystic Schooners 13, Bristol Blues 6

The Mystic Schooners (12-12) snapped their three-game losing streak with a dominant win over the visiting Bristol Blues (5-19-1) at Fitch High School on Sunday night. Schooners starting pitcher Sam Favieri (University of Connecticut) did not earn a decision in this one (3 IP, 2 H, 3 R/ER, 4 BB, 4 K) and fellow starter Kevin Vaupel (Seton Hill University) suffered his third straight loss in as many appearances for the Blues (3 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K).

A three-run second inning for Mystic gave the home team an early 3-0 advantage thanks to RBI from shortstop Stanton Leuthner (Stony Brook University), second baseman Sam Kirkpatrick (College of the Holy Cross) and center fielder Brendan Cumming (Princeton University). Bristol tied up the game immediately in the top of the third inning with a sacrifice fly by shortstop Christian Fedko (University of Connecticut) and a two-run home run by first baseman Brennen Dorighi (Wofford College). A four-run bottom of the third by Mystic gave them home team a comfortable 7-3 advantage highlighted by a two-run double by right fielder Barry Walsh (Boston College) and an RBI single from Walsh in the fourth inning made it 8-3.

The Blues tallied two more runs in the visitor’s half of the sixth inning to make the score 8-5 and an RBI single by second baseman Nate Vigeant (Rhode Island College) in the eighth scored his team’s final run of the contest. The Schooners exploded for five runs in the home half of the inning featuring a two-run single by left fielder Jimmy Sullivan (University of Virginia) to extend his squad’s lead to 13-6 and cap off the scoring in this one.

Vermont Mountaineers 4, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 1

The Vermont Mountaineers (13-12) handed the visiting Winnipesaukee Muskrats (8-16) a loss in a low-scoring victory in Montpelier on Sunday night. Mountaineers starting pitcher Parker Scott (Rutgers University) earned his first win of the season in a masterful yet short performance on the mound (3 IP, 2 H, 0 R/ER, 2 BB, 3 K) and fellow starter Kyle Muller (Rutgers University) bore his first loss of the sumer for the Muskrats (5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K). Brendan O’Donnell (University of Connecticut) secured his first save of the season for Vermont.

Mountaineers second baseman Keagan Calero (University of Dayton) drove home the first run of the game in the opening inning to give the home team an early 1-0 lead that would soon be extended in the bottom of the third with RBIs from left fielder Jack Frank (Michigan State University) and shortstop Craig Larsen (University of Pennsylvania) to make it 3-0. A sixth-inning solo homer by ‘Neers first baseman Adam Retzbach (Lehigh University) capped off Vermont’s scoring and Winnipesaukee center fielder Cole Johnson (Kansas State University) brought home his team’s singular run of the evening in the top of the seventh inning by way of a bases-loaded walk.

Ocean State Waves vs. Valley Blue Sox - Postponed

Sunday night’s matchup between the visiting Ocean State Waves (10-15-1) and the Valley Blue Sox (14-9) in Holyoke was postponed due to inclement weather in the area.

The ballgame will be made up at a later date to be determined.
