Game 1: Newport Gulls 3, Ocean State Waves 1

The Newport Gulls defeated the visiting Ocean State Waves in the first seven-inning game of their Saturday night doubleheader at Cardines Field. Both starting pitchers tossed four innings of work as the Gulls’ NECBL Pitcher of the Week Kellan Tulio (University of Louisville) allowed one earned run on four hits, walking none and striking out five, while the Waves’ Nathan Stahl (Indiana University) let up just two hits on one earned run, three walks and six punchouts. Grant Umberger (Virginia Tech University) recorded his second save of the season for Newport.

A third-inning sacrifice fly by Gulls shortstop Justin Guerrera (Fairfield University) gave his squad an early lead that would quickly be tied up in the visitor’s half of the fourth by an RBI double from Ocean State left fielder Travis Honeyman (Boston College) to bring the score to 1-1. A two-run home run by Newport first baseman Gavin Casas (Vanderbilt University) gave his Gulls an eventual winning 3-1 advantage in the sixth inning.

Game 2: Newport Gulls 8, Ocean State Waves 4

The Newport Gulls (16-7) swept the doubleheader against the visiting Ocean State Waves (10-15-1) at Cardines Field on Saturday night with a Game 2 victory, the Gulls’ sixth straight win. Newport starting pitcher Jimmy Kingsbury (Villanova University) threw four innings of two-hit ball (1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 2 K) and fellow starter Domenic Picone (University of Rhode Island) gave up two hits and four earned runs while allowing four walks and striking out six men in his fifth start of the summer for the Waves.

A two-run homer by Gulls third baseman Joe Fortin (University of Rhode Island) in the second inning gave his team an early 2-0 lead that would be cut in half in the bottom of the inning by the Waves. Another two-run dinger by Newport second baseman Justin Guerrera (Fairfield University) extended his team’s lead to 4-1 through three innings. Ocean State tallied another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the score to 4-2 with the help of an RBI single by shortstop Dylan Hoy (Marist College).

An explosive four-run seventh inning by the Gulls that featured a bases-loaded wild pitch, a pair of pass balls and an RBI base hit by shortstop Spenser Smith (Northeastern University) made it an 8-2 contest. A sacrifice fly by Waves left fielder Travis Honeyman (Boston College) and an RBI single from second baseman Alex Ramirez (University of Rhode Island) in the bottom of the inning cut their deficit in half but it would not be enough to overpower the scorching hot Newport Gulls.

Winnipesaukee Muskrats 11, Upper Valley Nighthawks 9

The visiting Winnipesaukee Muskrats (8-15) snapped their four-game losing skid with a victory over the Upper Valley Nighthawks (14-10) in White River Junction on Saturday night. Muskrats starting pitcher Bryan Pazulski (University of New Haven) was roughed up in his fourth start of the summer (1 IP, 3 H, 4 R/ER, 2 BB, 0 K) and fellow starter Cade Lommel (Creighton University) was also roughed up for the Nighthawks (3.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 8 K). Reese Sharp (Indiana University) secured his third save of 2021 for Winnipesaukee.

A two-run top of the first inning by the Muskrats was matched by a four-run bottom of the inning by the Nighthawks, a campaign that featured a two-run double by Upper Valley first baseman Ronald Evans (University of North Carolina Wilmington) to make it a 4-2 contest through just one inning. A solo home run by ‘Hawks designated hitter Gehrig Anglin (Wright State University) extended his squad’s lead to 5-2 through three innings. A two-run single by ‘Skrats first baseman Ramon Jiminez (Boston College) highlighted his team’s three-run top of the fourth inning that tied the ballgame at five runs apiece, but Upper Valley grabbed their lead back in the bottom of the inning thanks to an RBI single by center fielder Andrew Walker (Xavier University).

Winnipesaukee third baseman Josh Petrucci (University of Massachusetts Amherst) tied the game once more in the visitor’s half of the fifth inning at 6-6, a lead that would be extended for the Muskrats with the help of a wild pitch, an error and an RBI base hit by catcher Nick Marrero (Hofstra University). The Nighthawks tied things up at 9-9 in the home half of the sixth with another three-run campaign that saw an RBI triple from Anglin. Winnipesaukee right fielder Jake LaPraire (Tulane University) broke the tie with a two-run double in the seventh inning to give his team an eventual winning 11-9 edge.

Vermont Mountaineers 8, Keene Swamp Bats 4

The Vermont Mountaineers (12-12) snapped the visiting Keene Swamp Bats’ (15-7) three-game win streak with a victory in Montpelier on Saturday night. Mountaineers relief pitcher Ryan Steckline (Monmouth University) earned his third win of the summer (2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 B, 5 K) and Swamp Bats starter Zachary Davidson (Lincoln Trail College) suffered his third loss thus far (3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K). Cole Roland (Dartmouth College) recorded the save for Vermont.

A three-run bottom of the first inning by the Mountaineers gave the home team an early 3-0 advantage thanks to a two-run single by right fielder Curtis Robison (Pennsylvania State University) and an RBI triple from catcher Adam Retzbach (Lehigh University). An RBI base hit by Keene left fielder Thomas Joseph (Jacksonville University) in the visitor’s half of the third inning made the score 3-1, but another three-run fourth inning by Vermont made the score 6-1 via a two-run single by center fielder Tommy Courtney (University of Pennsylvania) and an RBI double from shortstop Keagan Calero (University of Dayton).

A bases-clearing triple by Swamp Bats center fielder Troy Schreffler (University of Maryland) in the top of the fifth inning scored his team’s final runs of this ballgame to make it a 6-4 contest. Calero drove home another run for Vermont in the home half of the sixth and a sacrifice fly by left fielder Jack Frank (Michigan State University) brought the score to an eventual 8-4 total in the seventh.

Bristol Blues 3, Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 1

The Bristol Blues (5-18-1) snapped their six-game losing skid with a nail-biter of a victory over the visiting Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (13-9) at Muzzy Field on Saturday night, the Blues’ second upset win over the Sharks this season. Bristol starting pitcher Dominic Agron (Wofford College) tossed a phenomenal six innings of work in the win (5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) while fellow starter Noah Johnson (Virginia Tech University) threw four strong innings for Martha’s Vineyard (4 IP, 3 H, 1 R/ER, 3 BB, 7 K). On a night of dominant pitching by both sides Jaren Zinn (Harvard University) recorded the save for the Blues in the ninth inning.

Martha’s Vineyard scored their sole run of the evening in the top of the third inning off of an error committed by the Blues. A fourth-inning RBI double by Bristol designated hitter and right fielder Anthony Galason (Elon University) tied the ballgame up at one run each and an eighth-inning bases-loaded walk drawn by Galason and an error won the matchup for the Blues, who desperately needed a victory.

Valley Blue Sox 7, Danbury Westerners 5

The Valley Blue Sox (14-9) edged the visiting Danbury Westerners (11-10) at Rogers Park on Saturday night as Blue Sox starting pitcher Robert Hensey (Monmouth University) tossed four innings of work in his team’s win (3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) and fellow starter Eruviel Candelario (Marist College) bore the loss for the Westerners (3 IP, 4 H, 5 R/ER, 4 BB, 3 K). Daniel Padysak (Charleston Southern University) recorded the save for Valley.

A two-run top of the first inning gave the Blue Sox an early lead thanks to an RBI single by catcher Cole Andrews (Miami University) and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. A second-inning RBI from shortstop Mason LaPlante (Yale University) extended his squad’s lead to 3-0 early on and a two-run triple from first baseman Jonathan Kelly (Xavier University) and a two-run home run by Westies left fielder Cameron Masterman (University of Louisville) brought the score to 5-2 through three innings. Another two-run dinger by shortstop Sebastian Murillo (Long Beach State University) cut Danbury’s deficit to just 5-4 after four innings.

Another two-run shot by LaPlante in the visitor’s half of the sixth inning scored Valley’s final runs of the contest and one more run by the Westerners brought the final score to 7-5 in favor of the visiting team in a back-and-forth battle.

North Shore Navigators 2, North Adams SteepleCats 1

The North Shore Navigators (12-9-2) walked off versus the visiting North Adams SteepleCats (11-10-2) at Fraser Field on Saturday night that saw an exciting ninth inning play out. Navigators starting pitcher Austin Amaral (Stetson University) threw six stellar innings of baseball but did not earn the win (5 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 7 K) and fellow starter Brian Zeldin (University of Pennsylvania) had a similarly great performance on the mound for the SteepleCats (5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K).

North Adams designated hitter Jeremy Lea (University of the Pacific) drove home the first and only run of the game for his team in the sixth inning, but North Shore shocked the SteepleCats in the bottom of the ninth inning thanks to a bases-loaded walk drawn by catcher Cal Christofori (Yale University) and another two-out walk-off bases-loaded walk drawn by shortstop Jonathan Luders (Seton Hall University) to send the Navs’ home crowd home happy.
