North Shore Navigators 5, Upper Valley Nighthawks 0

The five-seed North Shore Navigators (4-1) shut out the two-seed Upper Valley Nighthawks (3-1) in Game 1 of the best-of-three Northern Division Finals in White River Junction on Sunday night to take an early 1-0 series lead. Navigators starting pitcher Graham Jeffries (Salve Regina University) tossed a gem for the winning road team (6 innings pitched, 3 hits, 0 earned runs, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts), and fellow starter Cade Lommel (Creighton University) suffered the loss for the Nighthawks (3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 4 K).

North Shore took an early edge over Upper Valley in the top of the first inning by way of an RBI single from third baseman Matthias Haas (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo), a minuscule advantage that would not be extended until the visitor’s half of the seventh when Haas hit a three-run home run to make it a 4-0 ballgame and give the Navs a handful of insurance runs as the pitching held off the ‘Hawks. Haas then doubled in the ninth inning to make the score its eventual final tally as his team will look to solidify a spot in the NECBL Finals with a win at home on Monday while Upper Valley hopes to stay alive.

Danbury Westerners 9, Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 2

The four-seed Danbury Westerners (4-0) defeated the one-seed Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (2-1) in the first game of the Southern Division Finals at the Shark Tank on Sunday night. Westerners relief pitcher Jimmy Fahey (Trinity College) earned the win in relief of starting pitcher Justin Solimine (Manhattan College) by throwing two scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth (1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K), and Sharks starter Noah Johnson (Virginia Tech University) bore the loss at home (5.1 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 7 K).

Westerners second baseman Matt Zaffino (Fairfield University) launched a solo homer in the top of the second inning to give his squad an early lead and an error committed by the Sharks in the visitor’s half of the fourth handed Danbury a second run on the night. In the home half of the same inning, Martha’s Vineyard recorded both of their runs in this contest with the help of an RBI by center fielder Anthony Shaver (Florida State University) and a bases-loaded walk drawn by left fielder Collin Shapiro (University of Massachusetts Amherst) to tie the affair at two runs apiece.

A pass ball committed by the Sharks in the top of the fifth drove home a run that gave the Westies their lead back that was quickly added on to in the sixth via another pass ball and a grand slam hit by right fielder Henry Strmeck (University of Dayton). Strmecki cracked another longball in the ninth and final inning of action, this time a solo shot, to cap off the scoring in this ballgame to give his team an early series lead with the chance to clinch a spot in the NECBL Finals with a win on Monday.
