Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 14, Ocean State Waves 5

The one-seed Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (1-0) blew out the six-seed Ocean State Waves (1-1) and took Game 1 of the teams’ Divisional Semifinals on Friday night at the Shark Tank. Sharks starting pitcher Ryan Ramsey (University of Maryland) threw seven innings of dominant work in his team’s victory (7 hits, 4 earned runs, 1 walk, 10 strikeouts), and fellow starter Chris Chaney (University of Maryland) suffered the loss for the Waves on the road (5 IP, 5 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 5 K).

Both teams scored in the first inning as Ocean State tallied two runs in the top of the inning via a two-run home run by catcher Jonathan Tuccillo (Stony Brook University) and Martha’s Vineyard recorded seven in the home half by way of a grand slam by third baseman Grant Norris (Duke University) and a pair of RBI doubles from designated hitter Michael Brown (University of Washington) and left fielder Collin Shapiro (University of Massachusetts Amherst). The Waves scored twice more in the visitor’s half of the third inning thanks to an RBI double by second baseman Kyle Maves (Quinnipiac University) and an RBI by left fielder Travis Honeyman (Boston College) to make it a 7-4 ballgame.

Honeyman launched a solo homer in the sixth inning to bring the tally to 7-5 and score his squad’s final runs of the night before the Sharks exploded for a seven-run eighth inning to bring the eventual final score to 14-5 courtesy of three RBI singles by shortstop Jake Berger (Harvard University), right fielder Will Duff (Vanderbilt University) and Shapiro plus an RBI double by Norris and runs from two errors committed by Ocean State.

Keene Swamp Bats 8, North Shore Navigators 3

The one-seed Keene Swamp Bats (1-1) defeated the five-seed North Shore Navigators (2-1) Game 2 of the teams’ Divisional Semifinals and tie the best-of-three series up on Friday night at Fraser Field. Swamp Bats starting pitcher Cole Stallings (Stetson University) earned the win for the road team with a spectacular outing (5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K), and fellow starter Jackson Emus (Princeton University) bore the loss for the Navs (6.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K).

Keene tallied three runs in the top of the third inning by way of a bases-loaded walk, an RBI from right fielder Michael Nyisztor (Rutgers University) and an RBI single by left fielder Thomas Joseph (Jacksonville University). The Swamp Bats scored four more runs in the visitor’s half of the seventh thanks to a two-run Nyisztor single, an RBI base hit by Joseph and a bases-loaded walk.

A three-run home run by North Shore center fielder Joseph Lomuscio (Stanford University) recorded the home team’s only runs of the evening before Keene center fielder Troy Schreffler (University of Maryland) doubled to drive home an insurance run and help seal his team’s first victory of the series.
