Upper Valley Nighthawks 10, North Adams SteepleCats 1

The two-seed Upper Valley Nighthawks (2-0) blew out the three-seed North Adams SteepleCats (1-1) in Game 1 of their best-of-three Northern Division Semifinal on Wednesday night in White River Junction. Nighthawks starting pitcher Jace Kaminska (Wichita State University) picked up the win with his stellar performance on the mound at home (5 innings pitched, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, 10 strikeouts), and fellow starter Wilifrido Valenzuela (Bloomfield College) was roughed up for the SteepleCats (3.2 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 0 BB, 2 K).

Upper Valley wasted little time jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with the help of an RBI single by designated hitter Kyle Novak (James Madison University), an RBI double from shortstop Luca Trigiani (St. Joseph’s University) and a two-run single by left fielder Andrew Walker (Xavier University). ‘Hawks first baseman Ronald Evans (University of North Carolina at Wilmington) doubled to drive home his team’s fifth run of the night in the home half of the third inning before North Adams tallied their first and only run of the ballgame in the top of the fourth via an RBI single by third baseman John Marti (University of Albany).

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Upper Valley struck again with three more runs thanks to an RBI single by catcher Parker Haskin (Elon University) and a two-run single from right fielder Alan Roden (Creighton University). The Nighthawks recorded their final two runs of the contest in the home half of the fifth inning courtesy of an error committed by ‘Cats second baseman Mason Hull (Missouri State University).

North Shore Navigators 2, Keene Swamp Bats 1

The five-seed North Shore Navigators (2-0) edged the one-seed Keene Swamp Bats (0-1) in Game 1 of their best-of-three Northern Division Semifinal on Wednesday night at Alumni Field. Navigators starting pitcher Luke Marshall (Stonehill College) easily earned the win and threw a complete-game, three-hit, one-run, nine-strikeout gem of a performance on the road to give his squad an early series lead, and fellow starter Zachary Davidson (Lincoln Trail College) was handed the loss despite tossing a spectacular outing of his own for the Swamp Bats (5.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K).

Keene scored first in this matchup, their only run of the night, in the bottom of the first inning by way of an RBI single from third baseman Ronny Medina (Florida Southwestern State) before North Shore catcher Cal Christofori (Yale University) tied the ballgame up at one run each in the top of the fifth. In the visitor’s half of the next inning, Navs third baseman Matthias Haas (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) singled to bring home his squad’s final run of the evening and ultimately seal his team’s Game 1 victory.

Danbury Westerners 5, Valley Blue Sox 2

The four-seed Danbury Westerners (2-0) topped the two-seed Valley Blue Sox (1-1) in Game 1 of the teams’ Southern Division Semifinal in Holyoke on Wednesday night. Westerners relief pitcher Ethan Clough (Long Beach State) picked up the win (2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K), and Blue Sox starting pitcher Robert Hensey (Monmouth College) suffered the loss at home (6 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). Coleman Picard (University of Hartford) secured the save for Danbury.

Westerners third baseman Nicholas Lorusso (University of Maryland) doubled to drive home two runs for the road team in the top of the first inning, giving his squad an early advantage. Valley tied the game and tallied both of their runs in the home half of the fourth inning by way of a pair of RBI singles from first baseman Steve Luttazi (University of Massachusetts Amherst) and center fielder Brendan Hueth (St. Joseph’s University). A bases-clearing, three-run triple hit off of the bat of Danbury shortstop Sebastian Murillo (Long Beach State) in the visitor’s half of the seventh inning reclaimed the Westies’ lead, and they never looked back.
