Game 1: Winnipesaukee Muskrats 3, Upper Valley Nighthawks 2

The Winnipesaukee Muskrats edged the visiting Upper Valley Nighthawks in the first game of the teams’ doubleheader on Sunday. Muskrats starting pitcher Justin Murray (Dartmouth College) threw a seven-inning complete-game victory (7 innings pitched, 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, 6 strikeouts), and fellow starter Cade Lommel (Creighton University) suffered his fourth loss of the summer for the Nighthawks (5 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K).

Upper Valley second baseman Max Viera (Northeastern University) singled to drive home his team’s first run of the ballgame in the top of the third inning, but a three-run home run by Winnipesaukee right fielder Joshua Rodriguez (Rutgers University) in the bottom of the fifth gave the home team a lead that would not be surrendered the rest of the way. ‘Hawks first baseman William Sullivan (Troy University) hit a solo homer, his seventh of the season, in the visitor’s half of the seventh inning to bring his team within one run, but it would not be enough to overpower the ‘Skrats.

Game 2: Upper Valley Nighthawks 3, Winnipesaukee Muskrats 2

The Upper Valley Nighthawks (23-18) split the Sunday doubleheader versus the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (14-16) with a Game 2 walk-off win that ended up being the same final score as Game 1. Nighthawks starting pitcher Jack Keenan (Marist College) hurled five scoreless innings for his victorious team, and fellow starter Anthony Hattrup (University of Dayton) lasted under just two innings for the Muskrats (1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K).

Upper Valley struck first in the bottom of the opening inning thanks to an RBI by third baseman Gehrig Anglin (Wright State University) and an RBI single by designated hitter William Sullivan (Troy University) made it a 2-0 lead for his team through five innings. Then, a six-inning two-run single from Winnipesaukee first baseman Ramon Jiminez (Boston College) tied things up in the visitor’s half of the inning. A solo homer by Anglin in the bottom of the seventh and final inning of action walked it off for the ‘Hawks.

Game 1: North Shore Navigators 10, Sanford Mainers 3

The North Shore Navigators took a Game 1 win from the teams’ doubleheader with a blowout victory at Fraser Field on Sunday afternoon. Navigators relief pitcher Aaron Groller (Seton Hall University) threw seven masterful innings of work in his team’s win (4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), and Sanford starting pitcher Louis Stallone (University of Arkansas) tossed six equally wonderful innings despite his squad falling in this affair (6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K).

The Mainers tied the ballgame up at two runs apiece in the third inning thanks to a two-run single by outfielder Derek Smith (Bryant University) and catcher Dayne Leonard (Virginia Tech University) hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh to take a temporary lead that was tied again in the bottom of the same inning via a solo home run to force extras.

The Navigators exploded in the eighth with seven runs courtesy of a grand slam by infielder Logan Bravo (Harvard University) and a three-run long ball by outfielder Joe Lomuscio (Stanford University) to take the Game 1 win at home.

Game 2: Sanford Mainers 5, North Shore Navigators 3

The visiting Sanford Mainers (16-25) split the doubleheader against the North Shore Navigators (20-19-2) at Fraser Field on Sunday afternoon. Mainers starting pitcher Garret Keough (Georgetown University) picked up his second win of the summer (4 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K), and fellow starter Evan Christopulos (Bentley University) bore his first loss of the season for the Navigators despite lasting six innings (7 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K). Gavin Hinchcliffe (University of Delaware) secured his second save of 2021 for Sanford.

An RBI double by first baseman Logan Bravo (Harvard University) in the bottom of the first inning gave the home team an early lead that was taken away in the blink of an eye in the top of the third when the Mainers exploded for all five of their runs with the help of an RBI single by center fielder Calvin Hewett (Vanderbilt University), a two-run single by third baseman Mitchell Moralez (Utah Valley University) and a two-run double by first baseman Shane Paradine (Stony Brook University). Fourth- and sixth-inning RBI from third baseman Jake McElroy (College of the Holy Cross) drove home the final runs of the ballgame for North Shore.

Valley Blue Sox 10, Mystic Schooners 9

The Valley Blue Sox (23-17) walked off versus the visiting Mystic Schooners (22-18-1) in a back-and-forth, extra innings affair at MacKenzie Stadium on Sunday night. Blue Sox starting pitcher Kenneth Schechter (University of Rhode Island) lasted just one inning for his victorious team (3 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K), and fellow starter Jack DiLauro (College of the Holy Cross) pitched 1.2 innings of work for the Schooners (2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K).

Mystic scored thrice in the visitor’s half of the first inning and Valley tallied one run in the bottom of the inning before the Schooners recorded two more runs in the top of the second thanks to an RBI from designated hitter Christopher Brito and an RBI single by catcher Michael DeMartino (Southern Connecticut State University). The Blue Sox made it 5-2 in the home half of that inning via an RBI by designated hitter Michael Casaleggio (Palm Beach Atlantic College) and went on to tie the game up at five in the bottom of the third thanks to a wild pitch, an RBI double by left fielder Brian Hart (Marist College) and a sacrifice fly from first baseman Nathan Thomas (St. Joseph’s University).

Thomas doubled to bring home two runs in the fifth inning and give his home team their first lead of the night and teammate Luke Franzoni (Xavier University) singled to make it an 8-5 score in the sixth. DeMartino plus another wild pitch brought home two more runs for the Schooners to bring his team within one run through seven innings of action and ultimately take a temporary 9-8 advantage in the top of the eighth thanks to a sacrifice fly by left fielder Addison Kopack (University of Rhode Island) and an error. The Blue Sox promptly tied the contest up at nine runs each in the bottom of the inning thanks to an error and then walked off in the 10th courtesy of a bases-loaded walk drawn by second baseman Jack Housinger (Xavier University).

Danbury Westerners 7, Bristol Blues 3

The visiting Danbury Westerners (22-19) topped the Bristol Blues (12-29) at Muzzy Field on Sunday night. Westerners starting pitcher Justin Solimine (Manhattan College) won his second contest of the season with a great outing (6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 B, 5 K), and fellow starter Kevin Vaupel (Seton Hill University) bore his fifth loss of the summer for the Blues (4.2 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K). Renn Lints (Bucknell University) secured his first save of 2021 for Danbury.

Westerners first baseman Andrew Jenkins (Georgia Tech University) singled to bring home a run and give his team an early lead in the first inning and catcher Luke Shilger (University of Maryland) doubled to make it 2-1 in the visitor’s half of the second as a single by Blues shortstop Brock Murtha (University of Notre Dame) gave the home team a run. Third baseman Nicholas Lorusso (University of Maryland) singled to drive home two more runs for the Westies in the top of the third inning and make it a 4-1 ballgame early on. A fifth-inning RBI single by left fielder Cameron Masterman (University of Louisville) and an RBI from Jenkins brought the score to 6-1.

Bristol tallied two more runs in the home half of the fifth with the help of a pass ball and a sacrifice fly by center fielder Austin White (Coastal Carolina University) before Danbury designated hitter William Gersky (University of Richmond) brought home his squad’s final run of the night in the top of the seventh inning via a single to cap off the scoring in this affair.

Newport Gulls 10, Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 1

The visiting Newport Gulls (22-19) blew out the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (24-17-1) in their game at the Shark Tank on Sunday night. Gulls starter Justin Cherry (University of Rhode Island) earned his third win of the summer thanks to a stellar performance (6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K), and fellow starter Will Greer (Bucknell University) endured his first loss of 2021 for the Sharks (3 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K).

A two-run single by Newport shortstop Spenser Smith (Northeastern University) and Martha’s Vineyard’s sole run of the ballgame, courtesy of an error, came in the first inning of action. A two-run longball by Gulls catcher Matthew Wood (Pennsylvania State University) in the visitor’s half of the third inning made it 4-1 one-third of the way through the contest and a solo shot by him in the top of the fourth brought the score to 5-1.

An error committed by the Sharks in the fifth inning called the visiting team’s sixth run of the day and a four-run sixth capped off the scoring in this rout of a ballgame, a campaign that saw an RBI single by first baseman Bryce Hulett (University of Pittsburgh), a bases-loaded walk and a two-run double by Smith.
