Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Tom Brady is this week’s AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his Week 11 performance. The words “Tom Brady” and “offensive player of the week” have been strung together in the same sentence a total of 27 times over the last fifteen years. Brady has now tied Peyton Manning for all-time Player of the Week honors. At this point, they may as well rename this award the Tom Brady Award.
This particular twenty-seventh time was special, as Brady did this against his hometown team. Brady was the Homecoming King against San Francisco, going 24-40 with 280 yards and 4 touchdowns in the 30-17 win. Brady did most of that work in the first and fourth quarters, as well. This was his 21st game in which he threw four or more touchdowns and no interceptions, only extending his already-NFL record.
This is the second time this season that Brady has been awarded Player of the Week, as he did the same back in Week 5 against Cleveland. This is the seventh time this season that a Patriots player has earned an NFL honor.
Brady is racking up the awards this season, but that isn’t all he’s doing. He’s already having a historic season, despite missing four games (Roger Goodell’s plan has severely backfired, as you can probably tell). Player of the Week awards are cool and all, but this past Sunday, Brady recorded his 199th career win, tying Brett Favre for second all-time. Peyton Manning holds the all-time record with 200. Brady has the chance to get to that 200 mark in New York against the Jets this coming Sunday.
Oh, that isn’t all. Brady currently has 59,943 career passing yards, and is inching towards Dan Marino, with 61,361 yards, for fourth on the all-time career passing yards list. Third on the list is Drew Brees (64,180), second is Brett Favre (71,838), and of course, Peyton Manning holds the record for most all-time (71,940).
Also this past Sunday, Brady threw a touchdown pass to his 63rd different player (Malcolm Mitchell), reaching second on the all-time list, just behind Vinny Testaverde, who threw a touchdown to 70 different players. Keep in mind, Brady has spent his entire NFL career in New England, while Testaverde played with 8 different teams over his career. It’s kind of a worthless stat, but it’s still cool to show.
It’s fairly safe to say that Brady is having a historic season, and he’s only played 7 games so far. He’s setting himself up for another Pro Bowl year, so it’s just another year in the life of Tom Brady. At the age of 39, he’s playing arguably the best football he’s played in his entire career. It’s incredibly rare to see a quarterback at his age only get better as the years go by. He’d probably tell you that he’s still ‘rusty’, but all I see is greatness. Tom Brady will never cease to amaze me, even all these years later.
